- keatonkeaton998, on 05/26/2008, -3/+115Looks a lot cooler than it sounds. Either that or he's really really bad at it.
- bbqsalad, on 05/26/2008, -4/+53cool but vinyl will always be king..
- ThantiK, on 05/26/2008, -3/+51So many bad DJs who think that jumping back and forth between 5 seconds of the same song + changing volume +changing pitch + vinyl scratching = awesome l33t h4x0r mixes!
It's very seldom that you see a DJ that knows his sounds/clips in certain songs and can mix them perfectly. Most of them are like this guy here...very bad. But since they have a lot of equipment under their fingertips they think they're gods gift to music. >_> - H3BR3W, on 05/26/2008, -1/+32Very, VERY cool, but the second and fourth demonstration totally botched Jaylib's "The Red." Perhaps they should've gotten someone better to show it off, hahaha.
- supertaliman, on 05/26/2008, -0/+16What would be awesome is if the touch screen had a virtual latter rotating so that you can actually scratch.
- SPL3000, on 05/26/2008, -1/+15several answers:
1.- Size. You do not need to haul the vynils or CD's, just 1 or 2 hard disks with thousands of songs on them.
2.- Integration with software such as Abbleton Live that opens the door to a completely different musical expression.
3.- Flexibility: bet you can come up with split-screen models that can control either 4 audio tracks or video to go along with the audio.
4.- Creativity: You can have a pre-programmed mix on one side and improvise with the other channel. Many more applications could be devised.
etc..
Why not? - Fartbandit, on 05/26/2008, -0/+14I would go with him bieng a bad DJ tbh :p
- sny1120, on 05/26/2008, -1/+15this does not look precise at all. the scratching is not very accurate
he's doing pause/play or stop/play...you dont need a touch screen for that
good idea but needs more R&D - kinstray, on 05/26/2008, -0/+13Right okay... count the beats... 1...2...3...4... Dugg for the technology, not the DJ.
- r4ge, on 05/26/2008, -0/+8everyone uses this these days http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSVqh6ryLho
- babydick, on 05/26/2008, -0/+8Amen brother.
- Methodius, on 05/26/2008, -0/+6True enough, but let's not get too excited just yet. Remember that 20 years ago we thought we'd have flying cars by now. I'll hold my applause for the day these products hit shelves.
- mcsia, on 05/26/2008, -0/+6Says the person who just dugg the Nintendo DS music creation
- KINGGS, on 05/26/2008, -1/+7dug for knowing The Red.
- rjhomuth, on 05/26/2008, -13/+18Touch Screen Turntables... That'd be a good name for a band.

The Turntable is an instrument and the artists I named are the legends of turntablism. - angel0, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4http://www.scotthobbs.co.uk/
- ThreeDee912, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4If you look at the actual touchscreen, it appears to be similar to a Traktor-waveform kind of thing, not like a virtual vinyl. So I think scratching would be much different.
- belthesar, on 05/26/2008, -1/+5My God, I hope you're joking. You do know they release house, trance, etc on vinyl, right?
- famikon, on 05/26/2008, -1/+5dugg for digging for knowing the Red.
- piesforyou, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4...42. No, sorry, it doesn't really work.
- Acglaphotis, on 05/27/2008, -0/+4dugg for reply.
- baramunchies, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4sound is *****, but it's a student project, so put in some budget and more development and it will be an awesome product.
- bilangew, on 05/26/2008, -2/+6Exactly.
THAT is the reason I embrace technology, even in the DJing market. Old timers or purists want to stick to turntables and vinyls-- that's fine in my book.
But meanwhile, those who joined the tech train (no pun intended * ) will leave the hardware do the basic job (beat matching and such) while the human behind the decks use his imagination to use all the tools (mixers, decks, effects, etc) to push the limits of whats possible to be done in real time, with a brain and two hands.
I can't wait to see what we''ll see/hear in music in general in the future!
* For those who didnt know, a train in DJing is what its called when two played tracks are totally out of sync, sounding like a train - TomRemixed, on 05/26/2008, -1/+4The second thing he was playing was alright but I agree the first and last things were awful.

- KINGGS, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3You have no clue how lame you are for making that comment.
- ryanonfire, on 05/26/2008, -1/+4This is better http://www.pacemakerdj.com.au/
- ccheath, on 05/26/2008, -1/+4How could you forget DJ QBert?
- sockpuppets, on 05/26/2008, -2/+5The String Can Telephones broke up, remaining members went on to form the Touch Screen Turntables.
- ZephyrNinety, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3This guy is so offbeat it hurts
- elliotys, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3Looked, and functioned, almost more like a touchscreen beat machine, IMO.
- insanebrain, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3Because we can.
- mastazed, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3i agree. with the digital revolution serato is perfect for djs who love vinyl but do not necessarily want to wear down there favorite lps.

- Shinxsu, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2It might be tough to develop technique in these TST's but this guy sucks sooo many balls, at least 8. Anyways, I'd love to see these in action with a skilled TST-J
- supremebeing18, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Yeah, that's what I assumed it was from the title. This could be achieved with better results by just using Abelton Live on a laptop.
- stupidfilters, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2he did scratch, poorly, but it was there
the only difference would be you're moving your hand in a straight line rather than an arc/ circle, and you might run out of space on this if you want to scratch a long portion of the track - xonkonog, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2Well it is still a prototype, you know so dont expect somekind of phenomenol preformance just yet.
- Nimsim, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Internet Detective does it again!
- neodorian, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2I would say a good dj is a musician because they are manipulating and arranging sounds in real time to create new pieces of music. A straight electronic musician (studio) is more akin to a composer but a live DJ plays records the way a guitarist manipulates his guitar to create tones that he arranges as they are played. Saying a DJ (I don't just mean beat mixing) can't be a musician is like saying a violinist isn't really a musician because the violin is doing the "singing" and not the player.
- fuxjoey, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Interesting, but looks stupid, and it's not turntables, he just presses the buttons on the screen.
I think it just proves that touch screen does not necessary go well with everything. - REUYL, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Windows Media Player for Microsoft Surface could benefit from a few features like this...
- leontes, on 05/26/2008, -7/+9I think this contributes to the trends that foreshadow a new form of artistic expression; like with the wii, the iphone, the surface, multitouch and everything, we are looking at new technological input devices that will revolutionize our ability express ourselves.
The ability to allow our fingers and bodies to become multifaceted musical tools blows away the limitations that come from physics (as in the traditional musical instruments) and makes our only limit imagination. Give these tools a generation after being fully established and you'll see maestros form that can really take advantage of these potential forms of expression. Exciting times we live in. - OaklandNative, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2scratchlive was the best purchase i've ever made. no more lugging 100lbs of vinyl around and it instantly multiplied my record collection by almost 100 fold.
- elliotys, on 05/26/2008, -1/+2Sorry, I am, unfortunately, unfamiliar with his work, but I know he is one of the first. I will definitely look him up after this.
- ViktorVaughn, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1Umm, don't you mean train wreck?
Anyways, this looks cool for a mixing dj, but any kind of scratch dj worth his or her salt will be somewhat limited. Any friction based scratches, rubs, trubs, snakes, ect. won't really be possible as they rely on the slipping and sticking of the digits to the record.
All this looks like is another expensive toy for microwave djs. - Andrewe1, on 05/26/2008, -1/+2what the hell? how are you comparing a wacom tablet to a touchscreen turntable, and as far as ive seen wacom tablets require the special pen, you cannot use your fingers... and he was not talking about sensitivity, he was talking about tactile feedback, which you need for this kinds of things...
- dafragsta, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1I thought the DS scratcher thing that was on Digg earlier today was pretty cool and the guy doing the demo was way better at mixing than this guy.
