- CrossfireCurt, on 10/14/2007, -2/+41Third party firmware is awesome.
- TekTrixter, on 10/13/2007, -3/+22And locking your bike up is just stupid too. Anyone can cut it with bolt-cutters easily. whoever says to lock up your bike has no frigging idea!
- Snowbo, on 10/13/2007, -0/+14Limiting your MAC addresses and hiding your SSID are utterly useless security measures and they can cause connection headaches. A long (30+ character), completely random, alpha numeric WPA key is all that's needed.
- sputza, on 10/13/2007, -0/+13The only real security tip that works is "7. Enable WPA Encryption". The rest, such as hiding your SSID broadcast, does nothing.
Dugg for DD-WRT making the list. - Xibby, on 10/13/2007, -1/+13Don't bother with disabling SSID broadcast and MAC address filters. WPA Encryption with a strong password is all you need.WinXP SP2 has a known bug or two with hidden SSIDs and the SSID is easily discoverable with the right tools. MAC addresses can be cloned easily.
WAP-PSK is only as secure as your password. Try https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm for strong automatically generated WPA passwords. - overaction, on 07/14/2009, -1/+10Tomato is the best firmware I have used for Linksys so far. Made by the same guy that did hyperwrt +tofu. http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
- TrevorBradley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10How awesome is it? I was researching this this morning (independantly) when I had to reboot my LinkSys WRT54GL for the very first time. The default firmware seems pretty awesome too.
- HOOKSTER1231, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I use a old Direct TV dish with a 8db antenna where the receivers used to be. It has been by FAR the best way to get many many more bars. The only downfall is it is highly directional but if it is your internets then you know where your router is, otherwise just some trial and error will help you find the sweet spot.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You have to have a known allowed MAC to get into the network if you have MAC filtering on. Making your computer look like it has one is easy provided you know what it is, and that's the beauty of it. It'll easily keep out your neighbors, and it'll at the very least slow the guys screwing with WEP cracking way down.
- nickj6282, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9No, you're kurupttek. Do you need a diagram?
- streetr8cer13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9it offers features that arent available in factory firmware but its built on the factory firmware so it is pretty awesome :)
give it a try if you dont like it you can always switch back - Legolover64, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Cantennas are pretty darn cool.
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -0/+6Yeah, if the "hacker" kid next door is attempting to "hack" into your wireless by picking your SSID out of the list, being unable to connect due to the fact that you've enabled WPA security, and giving up.
Anybody with a real intent on getting into your network will know your SSID before they do anything else at all. That's cake. - InsaneMachine, on 10/13/2007, -3/+9True, but it does help from keeping the neighbors out of your wireless, and maybe the "hacker" kid next door.
- i4mt3hwin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yep, I use DD-WRT on my Linksys router and it's pretty freaking sweet. It's definitely more stable then the default firmware, and fixed an issue I was having with my range.
- jerrolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5My router is in the basement corner..im gonna try the ghetto-foil parabola booster and hopefully turn my 2-bar "Low" connection in the opposite upstairs bedroom into hopefully a 3 or 4-bar connection..
- orvtech, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6hum these are more security oriented than boost oriented.
- SupaNeo, on 10/13/2007, -1/+6Hiding your SSID broadcast? Are you kidding? All you need to do is passively monitor wireless traffic which is just point and click nowadays and your "hidden" SSID is plainly visible.
Security through obscurity isn't security. - Xibby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And keep in mind that some so called experts know nothing. A good example is Payment Card Industry which states that SSID broadcast must be disabled for PCI compliance. Oy.
- vertigoblue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4brute force hash cracking?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Too bad that password is in the dictionary. Total time to crack is < 1 second.
- Malakin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Contrary to what the article claims, if you use WPA with a randomly generated network key that's 20+ characters long, it is actually very secure and difficult to break. 30+ is even better. WPA2 improves certain aspects such as the security of lower quality network keys, but it isn't necessary as long as your network key is sufficient. Compared to breaking a good WPA network key, mac filtering and a non-broadcasted SSID are trivial to get around--so don't bother as both are an inconvenience.
Not mentioned in the article, but third-party firmware allows you to increase the transmission strength on some routers such as the WRT-54GL (and older WRT-54G's). Increasing it beyond about 80mw will not provide much additional advantage, if any, and merely starts to spam the airwaves, so be reasonable with this setting.
The tinfoil antenna tweak does work, but it makes your antenna directional instead of omni-directional. If you want coverage in all directions, this tweak is not for you. - physphd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I disagree. If you have one of the more common router brands used for open source (Buffalo, Linksys), there are thousands of step-by-step guides for setup and configuration. Yes, there are between 300-400 settings you can change, but I found a guide that explained each one, as well as the consequences of each setting. I installed and set up DD-WRT in one afternoon with no prior experience with router firmware of even linux.
- robbiekhan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I am running HyperWRT+Thibor+15c on my WRT54GL v1.1 and it is absolutely rock solid - I got cable back form ADSL 23 days ago and it's been on since then, in total I have downloaded over 90GB in that time (mainly torrents) without a single glitch and that's over Wireless on a 20MB internet connection! - I read about how some routers fall over with heavy torrent usage - not this one :)
I boosted the wifi transmission from the stock 50% to 65% and get full bars upstairs as does my brother on his PC too,
Linksys make "the" best router for this kind of usage and stability! - Kerath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Is DD-WRT better than Tomato?
- InsaneMachine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I get to about 80 days on that firmware, and then I reboot it, usually due to a setting change, or unplug cause of weather.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Eh, that's your opinion.
I personally prefer the Tomato firmware. I run it on a WRT54GL. Works awesomely. - mybeat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i have wrt54gl + dd-wrt, never had any problems either, I've just set max allowed connections to high number and that's and.
and for a signal boots, i wish i could demolish all those buildings in my way. - jstene, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Might help if you started by plugging in your router. By the looks it, it appears the router in the picture isn't even powered on.
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yep. I have the WRT54GL loaded with DD-WRT. It is amazing how much more control and functionality you gain. BTW, that router is specifically designed for, and marketed to, people wanting to load open source firmware, so there are numerous guides and step-by-step instructions for that specific model. Go for it. http://www.dd-wrt.com/
- SpykerSpeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Prolly doesn't matter which side the foil is on because radio waves will pass through the paper anyway.
- mbthompson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I have a WRT54GS, which is basically the same as the L, but I have yet to try the third party firmware, looks like I have a project for Saturday.
- nickj6282, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I am. And please don't call me Shirley.
- diggduggjoe, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3With online password generators, it is easy to get one to fit the maximum WPA key size of your router or access point. My is 63 characters of random glory. Remember though, WPA pass phrases should be dictionary attack resistant. I see new clients with the freaking company name for the pass phrase! Ouch!
- seinman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4NetStumbler is an active scanner. It cannot detect SSIDs with broadcast disabled.
- rouslan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Most effective solution: Buy/build a 2.4Ghz linear amplifier and connect it to multiple satellite dishes.
- afx1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3mine prevents me from using wpa
- sk545, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3they didn't mention that it matters what wifi card you buy or what router you buy. Some wifi cards really suck...and some work very well depending on if its the same brand as the router.
- KyjL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I like my Tomato Firmware, so I have a bit of a bias against DD-WRT. That aside though, 3rd party firmware knocks the socks off stock firmware. Dugg for that alone.
- molochi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The WHOLE point of the GL model is that it runs the old (linux hence GL) firmware and can run 3rd party firmwares. WRT54GLs aren't locked out of anything. They are still producing and selling GL v1.x (my v1.1 was new last year) as far as I know. Your version 8 is probably a wrt54g.
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -1/+3It's far more awesome than you realize.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2and for all those pesky routers that are still using wep encryption there is app #11....
aircrack-ng!!! - Shroomsoup, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Great post, but wherez the WEP Cracker?
...j/k - moo113, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4The best third party firmware around: http://www.dd-wrt.com/
Check it out. - budser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've wanted to try that but haven't been willing to risk the $20 it would cost me to get an old satellite dish. Perhaps I'll give it a try now! Thx :^)
- ch33sehead, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Firehed, who the hell still uses WEP encryption? I thought everyone would've switched over to WPA by now. It's more secure AND more convenient.
- kaskoosek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Tomato all the way. Woohoooo
- OBKenobi, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Forget DD-WRT, try this:
http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato - OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I agree. Tomato is much less problematic. You could build a brick ***** with all the bricked DD-WRT routers.
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've got a version 5, it won't run any of the third party stuff. Looks nice, but I can't justify replacing my perfectly functional router. I would like some bandwidth usage monitoring though, like Tomato has.
