- litkaj, on 10/25/2007, -0/+17You've got DirecTV to blame for that, not TiVo. If they'll let TiVo have access to their encryption algorithms then I'm sure that TiVo will make a new box for them.
- tophu, on 10/25/2007, -0/+12Don't worry. Now that Liberty Media bought DirecTV, they are renewing and reiterating their partnership with TiVo. The reason they dropped the excellent TiVo units for the ***** ones, is that the previous owners of DirectTV (News Corp) makes ***** DVRs and they wanted to use them. Liberty doesn't make DVRs, so they can go for the best.
- vinnyvenus, on 10/27/2007, -3/+14Now only if Series3 worked with Direct Tv HD programming
- vinnyvenus, on 10/26/2007, -0/+9Because Replay TV doesn't make hardware boxes anymore.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReplayTV - MioTheGreat, on 10/25/2007, -1/+8I'll never forgive DirecTV for dropping TiVo and picking up that new ***** software.
I don't know a single person who likes the new ones over the TiVos. - daikiki, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5They don't require you to connect to a landline any more. Haven't for a long time. Both Series 2 and Series3/HD will happily configure over ethernet these days.
- superkendall, on 10/25/2007, -1/+6The ToGo feature even supports the Mac.
I have to admit, they have a pretty compelling product there (though currently I use the ElGato device mentioned and am pretty happy with that). - Otto, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5Just bury, report, and block the user. Don't bother responding to spam.
- nbcaffeine, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5Thats the first I've heard of this. Just checked, my Series 2/80 hour DT still works perfect with Tivo Desktop
- doctapeppa, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5you convert them to mpeg2 and use the tivo desktop software to send them to the tivo.
- doctapeppa, on 10/26/2007, -0/+4...because that doesn't allow uploads to the tivo. I like to be able to upload internet-downloaded movies to the tivo and watch them on my TV. The only way I know of doing that is through the Tivo desktop.
- griz, on 10/25/2007, -4/+8This update hosed the Tivo To Go on Series 2 TiVos.
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -1/+5You can have my Tivo when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers. Love my Tivo.
- Kitsune818, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Interesting, both my Tivos reported receiving the fall update, but I don't know if it included these updates. All it mentioned was an enhanced wishlist.
- Radian, on 10/26/2007, -1/+5Griz is right. Go over to TivoCommunity and you'll see there are a bunch of people (myself included) experiencing problems with TivoToGo since the 9.1 update. By "hosed" griz means "broken" not "removed". Apparently Tivo is already working on a 9.2 fix but it's in beta. About 20% of my transfers are corrupted, so it's not completely broken, just hobbled. Might be time to switch to MythTV etc...
- merreborn, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Can you be a bit more specific? "Hosed" as in "intentionally removed", or hosed as in "unintentionally broken, but will probably be fixed in the next update"?
'cause the former is something to get up in arms about, while the later is unfortunate, but understandable. - Kitsune818, on 11/03/2007, -0/+4Actually, I watch less TV since I've gotten Tivo. I just watch the things that I find worth watching, when I feel like it. I spend less time watching something because it's the only thing on, and I spend less time not doing other life activities because something I want to see is on at the same time.
- microkitty, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4As Eric says, most of these features were available on Series 2 for a long time, but for those of us with Series 3 (or the new HD ones), it's a happy day indeed. The ability to watch Amazon Unbox stuff instantly is huge -- we use it when it's a rainy day or we're going out and don't have a movie for the kids; waiting a couple of hours involved roughly 119 more minutes of planning than I was capable of :-) Now if Amazon could just get more content and capabilities like NetFlix...
- doctapeppa, on 10/25/2007, -5/+8Now all we need is for the desktop software to work in Linux.
- kinseyincanada, on 10/26/2007, -0/+3i would like a TiVo in canada from what ive seen on Digg there great products, i finally got a PVR from Shaw cable and found it amazing.
- Xlr8ed, on 10/26/2007, -0/+3Why??
Just use the web interface (https://your_tivo_IP username=tivo, password is your_media_access_key) to download and tivodecode to transfer the .tivo file to mpg.
Works on Linux just fine. - Kitsune818, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3No, but I can confirm that I've done this within the past 2 months. I don't even own a land line. For awhile, you could trick the series 2 boxes by popping in a code that got it to do initial setup over ethernet. With the Tivo HD, it didn't even ask me, it just detected the connection and ran with it. I've been doing this since I got my first tivo almost four years ago I think
- nonymous666, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4Yeah, you must hate the competition.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 10/27/2007, -3/+6Because you live in a one-room shack with no electricity?
- Error601, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3That's old stuff. TiVoToGo on my series 2 was one thing that clued me into them having serious internal problems. Not only did it take a ridiculous amount of time to get the software out, it took months just to get the update to download, and then the USB wifi card support sucked so bad it was almost useless.
- Kitsune818, on 10/26/2007, -1/+4Umm, what functionality do you want on the Series 2 that they have on the Series 3s? The 2s pretty much do everything but HD, and they don't support an external drive because they have no eSATA port.
- Xlr8ed, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Two Words:Cable Labs
You think the MPAA/RIAA are bad....take a look at what Cable Labs does. - Kitsune818, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3Does it do High Def? I looked at this about a year ago and it didn't appear to.
- nearlygod, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3I love my RTV, so the only arguement you will get out of me is the lack of HD.
- litkaj, on 10/26/2007, -0/+2You might have gotten 9.1. If you don't have 9.2 yet then go to http://www.tivo.com/priority/ and stick your service number in the form. You should get 9.2 within a couple business days. Also, once you've got 9.2 then you'll need to log into your account on tivo.com and activate transfers in order to use MRV and TTG.
- unoriginal, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2I either need a Series 3 that will work with my local cable system's move to SDV or an HDTivo that will work with the new HD channels from Directv. Until then these are all really nice features I hope that people can use but I will be unable to take advantage of.
- nameOtheDay, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3Tivo is still being manufactured. Tivo has a HD model. They are adding features...albeit ones Replay has had for years. Tivo has a future. As an owner of 2 replays that get daily use, I really wish the Replay was still being updated.
- DrunkAdmin, on 10/25/2007, -2/+4wtf
- Wolfie351, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2Seeing as this is a tech oriented crowd, I'm surprised many people here are still using Tivo, considering ReplayTV had many of these features 5 years ago plus others Tivo still doesn't have. Also, anyone with basic computer knowledge can make their own (Beyond, Myth, Sage, etc) and have WAY more features. I'm content with BeyondTV and being able to record 3 HD and 3 SD (all at the same time) and stream it to any room in the house with 100% quality and streaming over the net with Orb. If only I had the time to watch it all, but it's nice having the choices at my fingertips
- opethlike, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2WHY?
- mccarron, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2What doctapeppa said. Amazon Unbox goes directly to the Tivo, other videos I upload via software.
I use VisualHub on my Mac to convert any clip to MPEG2 and then have it export it to my Tivo Shared Folder. The Tivo then downloads the videos to it's drive for watching on the Tivo. You can view it while it transfers too. - wildcatcs, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3Now, would someone explain to me how TiVo series 3 gets the ok to have cablecard and allow transferring to computer for burning to DVD but yet cable card will never be supported by linux (or if I understand right) any home brew PVRs because of the lack of DRM control.
- morpheus69, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Gee, my SageTV has had this for three years...and since it's just software running on a PC I can add hard disks whenever I need more storage, or upgrade my tuner cards with HDTV-capable models anytime. And it records in standard mpeg2 or mpeg4 so I can copy to another PC and watch the videos in Media Player or any standard video playback software. It will even convert to iPod format. Oh yeah, and there's no monthly fees, and the software is less than $100... Plus it has "Placeshifter" which will stream any recorded show over the internet to your PC wherever you are in the world, automatically adjusting resolution to suit the bandwidth. For the cost of a year of TiVo, you could have a better TiVo with unlimited storage and internet streaming with no monthly fees!
- Ripple, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2I loved my series 1 TiVO. The DVR that I presently rent from Comcast is a hackjob POS in comparison. I would buy another TiVO in heartbeat -- if only they didn't force you to connect to a landline for the initial service call. What century do they think we're living in? Almost nobody I know in my age group still has a landline, unless they get their internet via DSL.
- Kitsune818, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2The USB ports are USB 1. Not fast enough to stream full rez video.
- tfratzke, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Mine too...no clue as to what griz is talking about.
- mccarron, on 10/25/2007, -3/+4Works great for my Series 3. I know have a total of 1Tb of storage, and have even uploaded videos I've downloaded onto the Tivo to easily watch upscaled on my 56" DLP. Thanks TiVo!
- Ripple, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1really? There's a link on the front page that gave me the impression that you still needed a landline. Maybe they finally got with the program. Interesting. Can anyone post a link to something that confirms this?
- mrbad101, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Done.
- morpheus69, on 10/27/2007, -0/+1Yes, it's done High Def since version 5, over 18 months ago.
- Greer70, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1You're kidding, right? So have Tivo people. Now the TIvo people can do it in HD, too. The entry price is a bit steep, but the interface is much easier than the Replay TV gobbledygook.
- pt4117, on 10/26/2007, -0/+1It's almost as cool as ReplayTV was.
- EricWoodford, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1These features have been available on my networked series2 TIVO for a year now. This is only new to the HD Series3 devices.
- Dustin00, on 10/27/2007, -1/+2They can set expirations on content you record = I'm never coming back.
The internet is nearly always on and World of Warcraft doesn't have commercials, anyway. - connor2k, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1Christ, do you read the comment before replying. I said, "Obvious Reasons Now!", not five years ago.
