- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I wanna see one of the PS3. My system pumps out enough heat to adequately warm up my small apartment bedroom if I have it on for long enough.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It's times like these that I thank Raptor Jesus and the Flying Spaghetti Monster for the block button.
- dgritsko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Ah how I love digg's "block" feature... so underrated.
- MuTeD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I believe boiling point is 212 degrees F.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I think that comment spammer has done more than any other person to convince me that 9/11 was NOT an inside job. Thanks spammer!
- andrewry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, PC, Wii, among others would be awesome to see.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Should have a comparison between the thermal images of macbook and a allison aircraft engine. That would be a fair fight.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Unless you live on top of a mountain of course..
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I want to see the 360 after an hour with a game running. Dashboard and idle isn't fair.
- amandaw33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Grimshaw9 & MetalUnderShock
Use the digg block feature. Not only will you no longer see his spam, it also alerts digg of the post. The more people that take advantage of the feature, the less of the crap we have to see.
Nice post, btw, dugg - Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Fahrenheit?
WTF?
Is this 1950? - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah the xbox 360 is great.. it literally keeps my room at a comfortable temperature so I can shut off the heat while I'm playing. If the room is 60 degrees, it'll raise it by about 5 degrees within an hour. The case itself never gets remotely hot though, so I'm happy about that. Still, makes me wonder how much wasted energy there must be occurring if it can heat up my room.
(manufactured late last year, very recent revision) - LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I highly doubt that this guy knows where the battery is on the MacBook. From those pictures, it looks like he's showing a massive hot region in one corner of the MacBook, but that is NOT the battery. The battery is longer and rectangular. From where i see it, it looks like the hot spot is coming from where the main logic board is, and where the CPU, GPU, and chipset are situated.
Despite common preconeptions, the battery isn't located in the back of the machine and to the left.
Many more components such as the CPU and chipset, get much hotter than the battery on the MacBook. - melophobia07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This kind of reminds me of when someone took an X-Ray of a powerbook
http://gallery.future-i.com/tech-bits/pic:powerbook-xray/ - Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My Macbook Pro C2D runs between 48-72 Degrees C But the max temp is about 150 degrees C so this is a very low temp. I just deal with the temps. Actually it is quite nice now that it is winter. When I get cold. Start up the Mac Book Pro and all set. This is a cool experiment. I would love to see the MBP though because I am sure it gets warmer than the MB
- jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it coreDuo or Core2 (Macbook?)
- Sc0rian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://granulator.gg.utk.edu.nyud.net:8080/~web/thermalcam
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Man, that thing was friggin hot! He left it sitting on a padded carrying case to render some video overnight."
That's your problem right hterel Never leave a laptop on a padded case, it completel restricts airflow. I recently got the Griffin Elevator for my laptop so that the monitor would be at eye level. It also had the added benefit of greatly improving air flow. My laptop isn't even very warm on that thing (Rev. A 12" Powerbook). - airmann90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He's thinking celsius. 100 degrees celsius is the boiling point of water at sea level.
- Rkstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was totally thinking about Predator when I was looking at those pix.
- wdavis0911, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm setting at a Macbook Duo Core right now. After browsing the internet for a while my temp is 104 F/40 C. Considering I'm 98.8 F I'm not concerned about things catching fire. The back left corner gets warm but NEVER the battery.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@muted
well I have almost gotten there. My Macbook pro has gotten to 206 degrees before, and thank god it wasnet on my lap. - djphatjive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Notice the 360 tucked inside a small space. No wonder its hot!
- anonym41414, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You find me a household object that will ignite at 150°F and then I'll take you seriously.
- anonym41414, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's as opposed to "downward-looking."
Think airplanes. - pathy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4PC wouldn't really need one...
There are a few points of heat inside of the system - CPU Heatsink, graphics card... Possibly the motherboard, and then the PSU.
The case itself, atleast in my experience, will barely heat up if you've got a proper airflow going on. - pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4My son has a macbook, he brought it home during xmas break.
Man, that thing was friggin hot! He left it sitting on a padded carrying case to render some video overnight.
As I was shutting down my office for the night I put my hand on the mac and it almost burned me!
I felt the bottom of it and the cover it was sitting on and instantly knew that this was a house fire waiting to happen.
So I set the thing up a few inches on a few aluminum cubes I had laying around so that air could circulate around it.
These things are dangerous, I'm surprised there haven't been a bunch of fires started by them.
I also warned my son not to sit with the thing on his lap if he plans to have kids in the future. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I direct all the heat in the case toward my feets for the winter. Very comfortable!
360 heats up the kids room after all day of their playing! - xyqxyq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The heat pattern on that HDTV looks like a spinal cord.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"A FLIR Systems P65HS thermal camera was used to view a black, non-upgraded Macbook before and after yes > /dev/null was run for 5 minutes."
Just to be thorough, the "yes" command is not multi threaded ( it would be a little overkill if it were ) so running yes > /dev/null is only going to use 100% of one of the macbook's two cores, if he had run "yes > /dev/null & yes /dev/null" so there were two instances of yes running the macbook would have gotten much hotter. - naiku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2dunno but my Core2Duo gets up to 145 degrees on the CPU, and 100 Degrees on the enclosure.* im assuming either one will get up to those temps if left on a couch.
*temps from iStat Pro - chmod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would also suggest something may be defective. Mine gets hot enough to feel nice to the touch. I've never felt like it would burn me. If it is honestly getting that hot he may want to get it checked out rather than just not use it on his lap.
- ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sam Fisher would be proud... :)
- redmondmj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet this MacBook Pro I have on my lap right now is hotter. It kind of stings to touch it. It's been on and charging for over an hour now though.
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An enclosure still affects the reading with warmer air being drawn back into the case.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's actually a 15" TiBook, not a 12" PowerBook as the description says. You can see the slot loading drive opens to the front (not the right hand side at the back), and the HDD is between the drive and the battery. The 12" has the battery at the front and the drive behind it.
The hinges also look like the TiBook's external hinges (the 12" PowerBook doesn't have hinges like that).
Oh, and also there's ports on the back, the 12" Powerbook has a different design, the ports are on the left side of the laptop. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I peg both cores, my MBP maxes out at 61C. The fans hit 6000RPM tops. By the way, the iStat Pro dashboard widget now shows temps readings and fan speeds. It has readings for CPU, GPU, GPU heatsink, heatsink A, and ambient.
- b612, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my core 2 duo pro doesn't get that hot at all, especially compared to my old dell laptop
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't notice any difference between my MacBook Pro and my former Powerbook in the heat department. Powerful notebooks run hot, there's not much we can do about it without sacrificing portability size and performance.
As for MBP, I would think the heat is less of a problem than the MacBook because there is more heat dissipation and there are vents on both sides of the keyboard. - gianttacommk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OK, I just ran yes > /dev/null & yes /dev/null on my mackbook (core duo). smcFanControl reported temps of 177.8 F! (81 C) I hope that the onboard temperature sensor is inaccurate :O
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not hot.. it's around 80 degrees (in its hottest locations), so just slightly above room temperature.
- balls187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hi-larry-is.
I was really interested in picking up the new mac book, but I really like using my laptop on my lap. I know core2's have a TDP of 65W (not including the quadrastical one), so hopefully the next macbook rev will address the cooling issues. - dankCIA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks for the post. very cool to see how hot these things actually get. would love to see more photos !
- vinbot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I had a Macbook and a Macbook Pro, and both were unacceptably hot - I returned them both. Apple really needs to deal with this issue. They keep the fans on low because of noise and battery issues. If these machines were cooled better, the battery life would be horrible.
- crahan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm guessing the fact that the macbook's were closed didn't improve the cooling effect either. Out of the box macbooks and macbook pro's do not function with the lid closed simply because of the heat buildup.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It shouldn't be that hot. Probably the fans are not running as much as they should be. Try smcFanControl: http://81.169.182.62/~eidac/software/page5/page5.html
My guess is you are a victim of poor manufacturing process. They use too much thermal paste which in turn does not let enough heat reach the thermal sensor so the fans don't run correctly. - jackyyll, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1It wont load :(
- MetalUnderShock, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6@stupidppl you *****, don't push your agenda here.
- Bobski, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1OK, I know what FLIR is, I've worked with FLIR, I've even peripherally helped in the development of FLIR apparatus. But isn't it kinda redundant that you're "Forward Looking"? I mean, how many people are really that interested in looking at their arse?
