- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -6/+57weak military jokes are only funny when they're used on canada
- Helfax, on 02/06/2009, -20/+71Sweden has a navy? Wow. You learn something new everyday.
- GTPilot, on 02/06/2009, -0/+44What if there's other operational stealth ships that we just can't see?
- kevro, on 02/06/2009, -1/+34I didn't see that coming.
- Starshope, on 02/06/2009, -2/+34Sweden has an excellent military tradition and well trained Special Ops.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+25Anyone spotted the stealth ship in this picture? I just can't find it.
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009 ... - rz8472, on 02/06/2009, -0/+23Sweden actually has the capacity to build a lot of their arms indigenously; the are home to both BOFORS and SAAB (the fighter jet maker, not the car maker).
- Hraes, on 02/06/2009, -0/+22B... but I can see it? Am I special?
- garths, on 02/06/2009, -0/+22"I vould have liked to have seen Montana"
- DirtPile, on 02/06/2009, -1/+22Sweden has enemies?
- sdcarter, on 02/07/2009, -5/+22and the French.
- Xasit, on 02/07/2009, -1/+18Clearly, you don't understand what "Operational" means in a military context.
A piece of hardware is operational when it officially becomes part of the inventory ready for actual military ops. Hence "Operational"
The US stealth ship was an unarmed prototype that had like 8 bunk beds, a fridge and a microwave. - mojoe1185, on 02/06/2009, -2/+18Wrong, what about that little black thing from James Bond!
- Barackalypse, on 02/06/2009, -0/+13Correction: They claim it is electronically detectable at those distances based on technology they're willing to admit they have. Traditionally, modern militaries understate the performance characteristics of its vessels and detection capabilities (unlike backwards militaries like Iran which overstate its capabilities).
- jsmithers, on 02/06/2009, -3/+16Sweden were excellent in WW2, especially their special forces. Big Kudos, they helped the UK and others immensely.
- Lifehedge, on 02/07/2009, -0/+13Does Seattle have any Starbucks?
Their Gotland Class AIP submarines are impressive as hell too. U.S. Navy payed to have them training with the Pacific Fleet for 2 years (!). - mikewashere05, on 02/07/2009, -6/+18Doubtful.
Sincerely,
The former colonies - mfc5200, on 02/07/2009, -0/+12The was a concept ship
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Shadow_(IX-529)
Wasn't very useful, never went into production, lacked all major combat systems, etc.
Integrating all of these things into a production model is much different than a concept ship. - blindhammer, on 02/06/2009, -1/+12I think this thing would be better if it had legs. And was larger and walked on land. And had a death ray on the top. You know, the kind that shoots beams that vaporizes people into skeletons.
- jsmithers, on 02/06/2009, -8/+19As a British person (hello other Brit Digg readers!), I have to say this is cool and all that, but as the greatest seafaring nation in history it is fitting that the Brits should have the most powerful and advanced warship in the world, and yes it's stealth too, but that's just one facet of it's highly capable design: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7848174.stm
Rule Britannia, Britannia Rule The Waves! - Frostek, on 02/07/2009, -0/+10You're confused with the Swiss, dear boy.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 02/06/2009, -1/+11Now, why don't we send those to patrol the Somalian waters for pirates? :)
- Brassbud, on 02/07/2009, -0/+9Right there behind the house, looks red and white stri...oh wait nevermind, that was something else.
- michaelhood, on 02/07/2009, -1/+10http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/ar ...
Which one do you suppose is the RADAR officer? - Y0tsuya, on 02/06/2009, -2/+11They're building these in response to submarine incursions in the 80's. What have they been doing in the meantime? Shaking their fists and making angry faces at those subs from the beach?
- zoziw, on 02/07/2009, -0/+9Say what you will about our military we are one of the few NATO allies who have troops in the more dangerous south and east parts of Afghanistan helping the US.
- mugsoh, on 02/07/2009, -1/+9Buried as inaccurate.
France built the LaFeyette class frigate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Fayette_class_frig ...
India had the Shivvlik class frigate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shivalik_class_frigat ...
Gernmany's Sachsen class frigate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachsen_class_frigate
And there are others. - HawkieEyes, on 02/07/2009, -0/+850 years does not all of history make
- greggerm, on 02/07/2009, -0/+8That boat is not composites... it's surely made entirely of particleboard, held together by little wooden dowels and small screws, drilled in with a cheesy little metal allen wrench.
I bet the galley serves great meatballs and cinnamon buns, though. - sdcarter, on 02/07/2009, -0/+8That was called the Sea Shadow (IX-529) and, from what I understand, was more of a hydrofoil since it sat above water. Here's some info about it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Shadow
As for the Bond boat... it was a modified SeaCat (also a hydrofoil) inspired by the Sea Shadow. So it was similar; but not the same thing. - diggmeup, on 02/06/2009, -1/+8My torpedo just fired
- Brassbud, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7You don't have to be that big to carry a really big bomb.
- Lifehedge, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6Jessica Alba, is that you?
- Seidoger, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6Yeah, they explode in the ship that's carrying it.. They NEVER get fired
- gluecode, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6I guess the parent post does not make sense to diggers who have not read the book (by Tom Clancy) or watched the movie 'The Hunt for Red October'. In this book, a Russian submarine called Red October, commanded by Marko Ramius (Sean Connery in the movie) is powered by a water-jet engine called the 'Caterpillar'.
- charlietuna, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5Next you'll be saying Finland has no military experience (they kicked ass in multiple skirmishes with Russia).
- pfarag, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5The Swedes have stealth ships, our days are numbered.
- ngregge, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5Nokia is Finnish, numbnuts. Being Canadian, I'd have thought you'd be more sensitive to getting nationalities mixed up.
- dracostimpy, on 02/06/2009, -5/+10Sweden: ready for any naval battle in the era of air-based warfare.
- rupric, on 02/06/2009, -2/+7Now all it needs is Ian Ziering at the wheel with his beautiful curry mulley flapping in the breeze.

- wineinc, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5Very Cool
- MrCrumbles, on 02/06/2009, -2/+6That page makes my eyes hurt.
- Schwa142, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4oh... it's a sailboat.
- Seidoger, on 02/07/2009, -2/+6Before Harper, i could have replied to you: But at least our Forces are respected worldwide
Well now that's pretty void with our friend Stephen Harper - mdepaul, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4Actually the cars are made in Sweden too.
(though they are a subsidiary of GM) - HisPiffness, on 02/06/2009, -1/+5How soon we forget about Colonel Guile's stealth boat from the Street Fighter movie.
- farfromsubtl, on 02/07/2009, -2/+6Dugg for Rule Britannia.
