- t0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+40So in other words a pda?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+38This is stupid. Way to list the obvious.
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23I want one that I can control with my thoughts.
- sweetrelease, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23I want it to fly and shoot laser beams and give me super-powers
- awgg919, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Aww man. I thought it was actually gonna be a real "ultimate" media player.
- satanatnmtedu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16You have just described most of an Archos video player.
http://www.archos.com - xfTwitch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11and it needs laser beams, and rocket motors, and... and... and a PONY!!! That'd be AWESOME!
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12because its the only one that Joe Public knows about. Kid says to his mother "mom, I want an mp3 player for christmas", Mom goes out and buys one of "them iPod things". Coke gives away "free iTunes songs", further promoting the brand. iPod isn't the best selling device because of spec, its the best selling device because of advertising penetration. To the stage where, like "Google" is the public's generic word for search, "iPod" is the generic word for media player. I tried explaining to my old-dear what an mp3 player was. After twenty minutes, I said out of desperation "...like those iPods you see on telly". Bingo, instant recognition "ahhh.. they're good, them". duh...
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I found the UI to be rather clumsy, and the interface is gimmicky. The click-wheel is great for reducing mechanical aspects, but is a bit lacking in precision. I can't tell you how many times I've overshot what I was trying to get to, or selected the wrong thing when I move my thumb off of the wheel to hit the button, causing my selection to move up or down.
The sound quality is good, but I have found the volume lacking in many situations, especially when watching a DVD converted over. When I'm wearing noise-canceling headphones and have the volume on both the headphones and iPod all the way up and STILL can't hear it when flying, that's a problem. Battery capacity is a little disappointing when watching long videos, too. And I'm not sure where you're getting your definition for ergonomic, but a rectangular block doesn't exactly strike me as ergonomic.
Access to all features without reading a manual is probably the most ridiculous claim I've ever heard. iTunes is a shoddy piece of software at best, and continually deletes my files. The iTunes music store is probably the worst-performing web application I've ever seen. And the proprietary nature of the formats is ridiculously restricting.
I do use my iPod every day, and it's not a bad experience, but it's by no means perfect and there's plenty of room for improvement. - DeFex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Forgot 2 the most important things (apple also forgot them) RELIABILITY and replaceable batteries.
- altered, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14"However, it is starting to show its age, not just because of wear and tear, but also because of its design and technical capabilities"
This is stupid. Apple's always been technically low on features, and the design and UI hasn't really changed in like 5 years. - terrab0t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7He missed a few.
- Ability to add media files without special software, ie. you can plug it into your friend's PC and use it as a common removable drive.
- User replaceable battery with included spare and both internal and external recharger. - CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I want my 5 minutes back... Lame.
- Punisher2K, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6So we dig wish lists now? I wish I had a pony.
- shortarabguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I disagree with the supposed need to use touchscreen. I'd rather not put my fingers all over the crisp screen which is supposedly showing me a movie or some visualizations or something, and I certainly don't want to encourage little brats to mess around with a fragile touch screen. Keep the layout simple and intuitive, but don't make the screen massive.
Aside from that, I just have a general annoyance with video capabilities in portable players. It just feels like we're completely succumbing to television when we can't even go outside without watching another episode of The Office( great show, but come on) or "that one awesome scene of Pirates of the Caribbean". - thebenchase, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I love that the guy who wrote this article thinks he's going to get a portable media player, flash based, with 64 gigabytes of storage. WTF? Did this guy do no research before writing this article?
- RapeApe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5DemDude = ignorant of other DAPs. Thanks for proving my point. Excellent sound quality, battery capacity being perfect? Seriously, do you know anything outside of the iPod? Next you will say the iPod earbuds are the best ever produced.
- RapeApe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Proving Apple can crap in a iPod box and it will sell. Most people don't even check for other DAP before putting down money for a iPod.
- KipGhost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The article's seems to be very biased towards Apple and thus limiting scope on possible capabilities. Have to think outside of the Apple basket. A lot of of PMP's have more than just video/music/photo capabilities. Some have GPS, ebook viewing, video game emulation. As proud owner of Archos Gmini 400, there's nothing like showing it off by playing a Divx movies to curious on-looker, then busting out Sonic Hedgehog Genesis and Super Mario Bros NES games on it...an OMGWTF face usually immediately follows. iPod pwnage never ends.
- nigh7dagger, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Don't be silly. We need to save the frickin' laser beams for the frickin' sharks.
- jimmywong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Am I the only one who hates touchscreens?
- SteveMax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"their battery capacity is perfect"
No. Sony's Network Walkman series has a "perfect" battery capacity. I had a (somewhat old, earlier than the "bean"-shaped thing) 1GB Flash-based NW, and the battery was unbelievable (as in "never managed to get it to drop below 50%). It packed well over 30 hours of play time in a case around the size of a 1st generation iPod shuffle.
Too bad the software sucked so hard. - Pthalio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"When you talk to God it's prayer, When God talks back it's schizophrenia"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5God.
But we only need to start worrying if he answers. - pdxa4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4no but it will slice, dice, and make julian fries.
- radiometric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Personally I'd rather have an N95, but I agree that the ultimate PMPs are pretty much available now in high end cellphones.
Also, the iPhone is NOT a high end cellphone, just a pretty toy for those who don't know any better. - feckineejit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I want a player I can put in my pocket and either change tracks with a watch and have scrolling track info on said watch and also wireless headphones. That or all of this on a HUD with a remote and wireless headphones.
- monsterofNone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4blogspam.
- diggtochina, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I agree with most of this except for the touch screen. its nice and all but not necessary. He did mention support for all media types but i would like to specifically point out ogg and flac. One more thing, AM RADIO FOR US AM RADIO SPORTS TALK JUNKIES!!
- EclipseGSX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3He wrote the article in the future, where 64GB of flash memory is common, then went back in time to post it on a ***** blog.
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3*julienne
- YZBot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Those are features.
- b612, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3ipod is mediocre to bad as far as sound quality when comparing to other devices. Especially if you look at Cowon Players.
- bobcrotch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Meh t-mobile dash does all this crap accept the storage, but thats why I have 2 2gb micro SD cards. Plus it's a phone so that means one less thing to charge, carry around and/or break on accident.
- b612, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2except you have to pay for it and AM give you your local sports
- jrizzo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I agree. My Blackjack + 3G + Shoutcast = I win.
- b612, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yes ogg and flac are essential
- darkamster07, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2also I would love support for multi audio/sub track video, on a BIG screen (the problem with a lot of PMPs is that you have to sacrafice either portability or screen size)
but let me just say I am a big fan of the PSP, and I am in no way saying it is perfect, infact it is far from it, but with the right software, I find it gives a lot of bang for the buck compared to similar devices.
just my 2ยข - jackwaters, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3WTF..... What Planet are you from....?
- pdxa4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I don't wanna have to type it, I just wanna think it.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Oh the irony! Gos?
- radiometric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Or put wi-fi and a basic web browser in there and just go to any radio station's streaming radio. Why put AM radio in to... well into anything really?
- lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1dugg.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1He didn't misspell this. He meant it makes John Lennon's son Julian french fries.
- ffleming, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1oh yeah well my perfect media player is made of sunshine and rainbows and is powered by skittles
- JorgeGT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1maybe you selected "order by most diggs" in your global features page? I did that once and I was puzzled...
- altered, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1While I do like their design, Apple took a lot of time to get the battery life up, and the UI while being quite elegant is still very limiting. Part of what I find frustrating about iPods and especially Apple's marketing is the way they design it to appeal to the hipster crowd. Not all of us listen to U2 or Steve Job's playlist all the time. I listen to a lot of electronic music which comes in 2 cd compilations, and trying to sort that by the ID3 tags is frustrating as hell.
Arrange by artist? I have 4000. Arrange by song: even worse. By album is slightly better but since the tracks are from 2 cds, I end up listening to track 1, disk 1; then track 1, disk 2 etc. Add to that that the iPod didn't do gapless playback till recently, and it certainly "didn't do everything I wanted perfectly". P.S. Some of us prefer to not use iTunes to sync music, but again--not given that option.
It did take till 5.5th Gen to implement gapless, and so far they're the only company that do it out of the box, perfectly. So respect for that. However, 5.5 generations of a almost totally market-dominated MP3 player is still damn slow. - rothgar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I guess I am the only one looking for stereo bluetooth in a media player
- InsaneOni, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How about supporting some higher quality formats like flac and ogg? That's what would really get my attention.
- schmitey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's it! I refuse to click on any more digg articles with "ultimate" "best" or "coolest" in the title. It's always a letdown.
