- nielkie, on 07/14/2008, -1/+22Ofcorse not. Despite the fact that it has no dedicated graphics processor, it is made up of 31,328 cores, and because Crysis is not truly multi-threaded, it will run no faster than a moderately-powerful computer.
- wily6, on 07/14/2008, -10/+29I heard the computer still couldn't run Crysis on full settings.
- atgmac, on 07/14/2008, -3/+194 posts. 4 ***** posts is how long it took somebody to say that.
- idc5, on 07/14/2008, -2/+18The power of this computer will fit in the size of a current desktop within 20 years.
- sporg, on 07/14/2008, -2/+16I guess these don't run windows...
- cruxion, on 07/14/2008, -1/+12I'll take three.
- arjie, on 07/14/2008, -0/+10I've noticed loads of top supercomputers seem to be using AMD processors. Does anybody here know why they choose those over Intel?
- MrEcho, on 07/14/2008, -1/+10Connectivity between the nodes
- GeorgeStone2, on 07/14/2008, -5/+14in b4 crysis.

- aaronbeemer, on 07/14/2008, -1/+7no, they're not powerful enough to run vista at full capacity...
- secrity, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5The Cray Jaguar lineup looks like a row of orange and white generic soft drink machines. If they could pick the color, couldn't they also pick the graphics?
- bradleyland, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5HyperTransport? At the time AMD's chips had on-die memory controllers and used a consortium developed technology called HyperTransport, which presents a significant advantage in multi-core computing.
If each CPU is considered to be a node, and each node has its own direct method of reaching out to other nodes, that would be considered superior to a node design that relied upon aggregated links that must be shared amongst nodes. - goffy59, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5After all this noise about how Intel is so great. How come its still AMD? I think its because of the power conservation. At least AMD is still kicking ass in the server/massive computer market. A bunch of Intel fan boys used to make fun of the AMD quad core they were using in the Jaguar. It appears its been put to good use. Another thing that is interesting is when Cray made a deal with Intel. I guess Cray still uses AMD regardless of its partnership with Intel. It would be nice to know each processors pros and cons in the perspective of Cray. I know desktop computing is a whole lot different then super computing. But still, it raises some questions and interests. I really liked this article.
- garrerc, on 07/14/2008, -1/+5but ... will it blend?

I invent the Oak Ridge Boys meme. - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3not excessive; par for the course and important to keep machines cool
- Nicksname1, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3What a badass looking DataCenter!
- post3r3r, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3As a kid who grew up in Oak Ridge... those computers/labs are the only good thing in that damn town.
- norman619, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3""When you buy a computer this large," Messer said, "You get to pick the color.""
As long as the colors you pick are grey and red. - strictnein, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Or Orange and White
- graysanborn, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3Anyone else slightly annoyed that reporters never use the correct scale of 1024 when stating how many of ___ are in a ___?
/Sad realization of nerdiness... - CaptainLando, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2If there are any college students reading this, ORNL always has internship opportunities that go unfilled due to lack of applicants. I'm not so sure you'd get to work on these machines, but who knows? ;)
http://computing.ornl.gov/internships/rams/ - smoke33, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1I don't see any mistakes in this article.. Are you talking about the "clocking 18 teraflops, or 18 trillion floating point operations per second", because that is correct.. tera is 10 to the 12th power, or 18 trillion, and flops is floating point operations per second. It isn't based on a 1024 scale.
- black27696, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1I don't know about anyone else, but when I saw what the Jaguar can do, I suddenly thought "So....what would gaming be like? If I shot someone would it kill them in a match that they played three months ago?"
- goffy59, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Intel fan boys who can't accept fact dugg me down.
- trollick, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Imagine a Beowulf cluster of these!
...
Whom am I kidding. I don't even know what Beowulf cluster is. - jamessavik, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Wish I'd had one of those back in the eighties when I was writing FORTRAN programs that took 2 to 6 hours just to compile. Running them could take days.
- gotigertom, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2The machines were architected by Cray and IBM back when AMD had a foot hold on Intel with the development of better networking. Intel have since dwarfed AMD in this area.
- whosmatt, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1It's only the fifth fastest, but it's the first reddest.

You've won todays prize for FAIL! - ajbl, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Why do University of Tennessee fans wear orange?
So they can go to the game on Saturday, hunt on Sunday, and work on the Highway during the week. - HareBall, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Orange and white is for the University of Tennessee.
- graysanborn, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Nvm. Apparently flops use base 10 rather than the majority of computing's base 2 ( 1024 MB -> 1 GB / 1024 MHz -> 1 GHz ). Digg me down.
- Mactrekr, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1No
- babydill, on 07/14/2008, -3/+3they should really put it to good use by FOLDING@HOME. ***** SETI it's a waste of my time, aliens dont give a ***** about us. were gunna kill ourself soon enough. VOTE MCCAIN to make it happen. bloody idiots
- Baryn, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1I INVENTED THE CRYSIS MEME
- Baryn, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1Why do you hate Crysis on full settings?
- diggdiggdug, on 07/14/2008, -2/+1Maybe we could put it to use running computational models to figure out why liberals are so irrational, illogical and stupid.
- casek, on 07/14/2008, -4/+3ahh, oak ridge. please don't poison me.
- jerryterhorst, on 07/14/2008, -6/+4the first thing i thought of was a comment about running crysis... and was already beaten to it twice.
therefore, my diggigent diggers, i proffer up this comment and as an unworthy sacrifice.
humbly,
jerry - provocal, on 07/14/2008, -2/+0I bet EidolonTLP runs in one of these babies.
