- Technojunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you're building a Myth box for standard definition TV, ASUS's GeForce 6200 128MB AGP card is tough to beat. Fanless, tiny, only composite out though, runs cool despite having a heatsink that's no bigger than the card. If you need component out and such there are 6200's by other vendors that have the standard nVidia breakout pod. If the 6200 is inadequate, get a normal PCIe 6600GT and put a Zalman VF700-AlCu cooler on it. It won't be silent but it should be close enough. You'll lose the slot next to the video card though. Beyond that you're in water breather territory, fun but $$$. See http://www.dangerdenstore.com for that.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've always been a supporter of passive cooling. I think its the natural way to go.. Instead of fixing a problem you create, don't create the problem in the first place. This implementation looks technologically sound, and although not very aesthetically pleasing, that was not its purpose so I am not judging it on that. I think its more important to get the support out there for these kinds of better-engineered devices first, function over form, and then make it look pretty.
I especially don't care about the aesthetics of a card inside of a media center edition, except in this case it looks as though the card is so jagged that it might interfere with other hardware placement, and this time, I don't think a saw would help. :) - CyberWindCloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty innovative....but it looks heavy...........can possiblely use as a murder weapon. ^_^
- fli7e, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These have been around for several years. The idea of utilizing the CPU fan might be new, but that sort of defeats the whole purpose of a silent card right there.
Sorry, but no digg. - Parmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Indeed is ugly. But there are probably many applications and people willing to use it in sound sensitive areas.
- Bladerunnerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you are looking for a cheap, but "fanned" solution, try one of the Artic Cooling Silencers. I was skeptical, when my graphics card fan died I bought an ATI Silencer 3 rev2.
1) cheap
2) Vents the hot air OUT of the case.
3) quieter than the stock fan
4) and yes my gpu temps dropped more than 10 degrees. I also noticed that now my GPU and G-RAM only differ by 1 to 2 degrees.
---- Little money well spent. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really wish passive cooling would come down in price. I run all my fans at the lowest speeds but theyre still too loud for me. My computer runs at 43 C load temperature (not OC'd) and my system at 37 at the lowest fan speed. Even a crappy passive cooling solution would probably not overheat.
- mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather just water cool the thing and keep the performance up.
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh my god... that's just ugly... but innovative.
buy UGLY!
no thanks... i'd rather build a sound dampening enclosure for the entire case... zero noise. only open enclosure to use DVD tray.. - cjurczak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These really are great if you have the room in your case, and have some air-flow...if you have a shuttle or a fan-less case look elsewhere...or better yet deal with the noise...
- lasthunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have always wanted a powerful card that produces no sound
- DanVersion1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is another interesting silent cooled graphics card by ATi using a liquid metal cooling. It was on Digg awhile back ..... so search for it, cus I dont remember the link!
