- ceekay, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27This is old new. Microsoft already made a 3 button keyboard.

Lets get serious,
I would be happy with a re-programmerable keybord. Then screw the OLED feature.
It will add almost and extra 80 dollars. And some extra buttons would only cost like... 10-20 dollars ? - SilentBobSC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmmm.... keyboard-let for Winamp? Or, if they could integrate the OLED concept to something like the G-Keys on the Logitech G15... hrmm...
SB - AETAaAS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope theyre not scrapping the OLED keyboard, that was awesome....
This one looks like a PDA or something like that, judging by whats on the screen... - mdmoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@runner91786
Where did you get the information you just posted? How do you know that they are going to release the Optimus OLED keybaord for sure? The only information on the internet is that *something* is coming out February 1st. No actual fact of what it is. The Engadget story linked here is only their thoughts on something that *might* be coming out instead of the Optimus. Nowhere does it say that they know for sure that this is the thing coming out. If you're going to call someone a douchebag for posting incorrect information, provide sources to prove your point, otherwise you're a douchebag as well. - Cthalupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's most likely a proof of concept that they're getting out to show producers that it is possible to create a full keyboard.
- dragonflight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ ceekay: lol
Who needs 3 keys for that? I programmed my left mouse click for ctrl alt delete back in the days of 98 ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares, anyway? Unless it was going to be an ergo board, I wasn't going to want it anyway.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1667902,00.asp
this thing looks odd. Griffin comes to mind. - Orangutan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this saddens me. thanks for the tip off, but its annoying.
i digg it, but i dont dig it - teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think of Mini Optimus as an extra input device that could come in handy for certain repetitive tasks that some just don't have enough special hotkeys for. Like Creating a new email, Starting a Fav program, Throwing a flashbang in CS:S, Acting as the 'Accept' button in PS, Volume control. The list is endless with every person.
Reminds me of the Button/Wheel thing like this one: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/accessories/5ca2/
But the Mini Optimus does one-up on the Griffin by using OLED displays.
If its cheap enough and available I might buy it when it comes out, if not I won't freak out but hopefully I'll be able to get the full size later. - gumpy5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't think thaty were going to launch the real thing next month.
- camtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^HOLY!, thats ugly
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My heart has exploded all over my keyboard and I don't have an Optimus to replace it with :(
- DrJuice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It makes sense that this would come out first. The whole "Good things come in small packages" on their website didn't really fit with the full Optimus keyboard. While this certainly doesn't appear as useful, I think they're testing the waters with this. Sure the Optimus looked pretty, but as far as I can tell they hadn't manufactured one back in July when it was first announced. They certainly wouldn't want to release a $200+ keyboard that had tons of bugs.
I don't think this will sell that well, simply because it doesn't seem to be a "must-have" device. I dig the concept, though. Hopefully the full Optimus will be out some time this year. - camtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 _____ ______ _____

|_____| |______| |_____| - Jetfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My best bet is an add-on for Laptops. You know how they talked about getting E-mail and listening to Music while Laptop is closed and off (or some super-min power mode). Well this adds color to the old B&W screens. Maybe even add a little video.
- joel.smith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But I want the OLED keyboared nnooowww. :(
- tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL ceekay thats very funny
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't see it being as useful as a full keyboard of oled buttons, or in fact useful at all quite honestly.
The point of the OLED on the keyboard isn't for when your typing (a lot of people touch type anyway) but more for showing function buttons in a meaningful way for applications that can be used more optimally with keyboard input as well as mouse (photoshop, 3d modeling software, more complicated sim games etc)
What can you usefully do on 3 display/button things? - notkevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Give me a wireless keyboard over a wired OLED keyboard anyday.
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it had four keys that where W, A, S, and D, I'd buy it. :)
But this sucks, what do you do with it? - ever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Keep in mind Lebedev doesn't mass produce stuff. It's a design company.
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it would be nice to to have a screensaver for my keyboard, its one of my peripherals that is not that exciting and could stand a bit of color.
- mc1123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i looked at the actual keyboard, pretty cool idea. i like the ability to have multiple languages.
- zaders, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the look of the full keyboard but this thing just seems a bit useless.
- CitizenKaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of people wonder what use this is. I think its pretty cool, remember that these are displays, and software controlled. So you could for instance set it up to show in real time the three most recent digg stories. No matter where you are on your computer, even in a full screen game just glance down and see whats going on. Apply the same idea to gmail, or slashdot, or cnn.com, or whatever you like.
- ever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Read the info on the Lebedev site. read the FAQ for christ's sake. Also note that the three button device in the picture is called "Optimus keyboard, model mini three". != Optimus keyboard.
- keek4jc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know about you guys... but that's not what I've been watching and wanting - This is http://www.engadget.com/2005/07/14/optimus-wireless-keyboard-wears-its-functions-on-its-keys/
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ceekay lol!!!
- CrazyShrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't get it.
What do you use this for?! - Chango_Family, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im not gonna call people names but some of you really should put in two mins before the "this sucks, why would I need to look when I type?" comments. Its like an african asking why an eskimo has to wear thick boots and gloves; its not something he comes across in his life.
- How many languages do you use in the day on your computer?
- Are those languages based on the latin character set?
If your answer is 1 for the first question, chances are the keyboard isnt for you unless you want to use it for gaming (which considering how much gamers will spend on their gear is par for the course).
When you have to alternate between 2-3 keyboards for your work, this is a MUST. There are some companies which sell dual letter keyboards but those are confusing sometimes but still better than the do it yourself option.
While this might not be useful in unilingual countries or even biliingual countries like Canada but in Asia, slav countries (with the cyrillic alphabet), arab countries and all the others that have non-latin alphabets AND use english, this is gonna be great.
It also explains why its designer is Russian: Lebedev probably has to use english and russian in his every day work and its something that solves a need. - capajc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WTF is wrong with engadget? They have a post about another website, and they don't even include a link to the source for the info in their post? Lame.
- Demagogue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My biggest problem with this keyboard is that I spill ***** on mine all the time so if I did that to it I'd be *****.
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What's the point in this keyboard? Dvorak is probably right it's going to cost about $600.00 a piece, and if you know how to type your not even going to look at it. I also don't think gamers will use it, you can't look at the keyboard while playing UT2007."
In some games it would be handy, but it's real purpose will be in applications. I can imagine being in Flash or Photoshop and this keyboard would be pretty damn sweet. - Combathangar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My 1994 serrial mouse had 3 buttons....and 2006 they think I need an extra widget on my desk in case I forget where the "F", "U" and "!" keys are?
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nooooo!!! I want my OLED keyboard!!!! This thing is a toy.
- curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah there is no definitive information here, i still am hoping for the full optimus keyboard to be release this february, the perfect addition to my new pc I'm buildiing!
- derrickkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's stupid, I want the full keyboard
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0three keys!!!!!! are you kidding me? that big keyboard looked sooo sexy!
- spinesplitter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what i want is laptop layout keyboard w/ an extra two rows of keys with oled's on them, in windows they could display the quicklaunch toolbar.
i wonder if theyre taking *nux into consideration. - NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lies.
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People stop complaining! Do you know how to make a full 128 key OLED keyboard?? Well they dont either... Once the technology is available they will release it, but i guess for now they can only make a 3 key one, which i still want anyways.
- crickton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this is released, it's a good proof of concept and one step closer to a full Optimus keyboard.
- Vision77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Come on with the real thing already. Windowblinds for my keyboard would be nice. I know somebody will hack it and have pr0n playing on their keyboard.
- 2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is similar to the Windows Sideshow feature coming in Vista and future laptops.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/features/default.aspx - caleberx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It will be a lot of fun to actually see the real thing. I think the coolest part is the keys but the wireless is nice add on
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great, now they've proved it's possible they should do something useful with it.
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, just put 40 or so of these suckers next to each other and you'll have a whole keyboard.=)
I like the clock button. Maybe it'll get some more ideas flowing about the posibility of evey key being a full video display. I see altimeters, rear view mirrors. Lot's of possibilities. - ra3ndy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""learn to use windows and ctrl alt delete isnt needed. :)"
whatever, no amount of user experience or knowledge can protect you from poorly written software."
I think part of the original quote got lost. He probably meant "learn to use windows for gaming and buy a mac. ctrl + alt + del isn't needed"
[/smarmy mac fanboyism]
thread relevance.....aw snap i'd love to be able to open my most used apps by just pressing a button....oh wait i have a mac, i can do that in the dock. it lights up too.
ok fer real now [/smarmy mac fanboyism] -
