- bobbysarcletti, on 03/12/2008, -2/+180two? anyone using less than 3 computers at once is clearly slacking off.
:P - bstory, on 03/12/2008, -3/+125I have 5 computers but 4 of them are for throwing at my main computer when it is acting up.
- SupaFurry, on 03/12/2008, -2/+105Jeez, where's the time to just chill the f**k out? All this "maximizing productivity" makes me want to puke.
- dext3r, on 03/12/2008, -5/+68I disagree.
- Hosalabad, on 03/12/2008, -3/+58*****, this guy is a moron.
- MasterThief117, on 03/12/2008, -2/+49"At a $400 entry price, there's no excuse not to buy a tiny laptop."
Bah, the excuse is I am not made of ***** money. - indiscriminate, on 03/12/2008, -0/+39judging by title alone, i was expecting someone trying to one-up the one laptop per child campaign.
and for everyone keeping score at home, i have 1 laptop, 1 desktop, 3 calculators, 1 broken abacus, and a handheld connect 4 game. - rdubb, on 03/12/2008, -2/+30new digg feature request: omit content from computerworld.
- dotlizard, on 03/12/2008, -7/+32i carry two laptops (a mac and pc, both 17") and have a spare laptop at home, plus a smartphone that will share its internet connection with any of them. still, i feel like i need something more. i will probably always feel this way until i have a CPU implanted in my brain connected to the internet through telepathy.
- onealchris, on 03/12/2008, -2/+25Probably a can of worms here, since I don't know the general Digg thoughts, but... why don't people use docking stations more if they travel so much? Doesn't seem like you hear of that many people using a laptop and then just docking it when they get home. Just curious?
- bigdoof, on 03/12/2008, -2/+22If someone went through all the trouble to post their "uber setup" on digg, you'd think it would be at least marginally impressive. Instead I got a picture of some guy's desk with two generic computers, a tiny LCD panel, and a CRT that had to come from the early 90s. Oh, and the world's ugliest carpet nailed to a wall.
- inactive, on 03/12/2008, -1/+19If you "need" two laptops to be productive than you are not very good at your job.
- Crossmenjeff, on 03/12/2008, -1/+19according to the people who want you to spend money, not save it...
- debuggercll, on 03/12/2008, -2/+18The rug really ties the room together.
- elchuy, on 03/12/2008, -2/+18At the moment I use three. The laptop I keep in my bedroom to watch movies on Netflix, the desktop is for gaming and to use as a media server and my portable computer for when I'm on the go.
- binaryspiral, on 03/12/2008, -1/+17Too right. If you need two laptops to stay "productive" you have a few problems:
1. Your definition of productive is way off
2. Your laptop is woefully underpowered. - pak314, on 03/12/2008, -0/+16What do they mean by maximal productivity? I think some people do just busy work and have no productivity. They run around in meeting all day thinking they are actually contribution something.
- badqat, on 03/12/2008, -2/+17Can't speak for dotlizard, but you do know you can run Windows on the Mac, right?
- InsaneOni, on 03/12/2008, -1/+15He said big screens = more productivity, I'm not so sure I agree. Now that I have a 24" monitor, I can surf the net on half the screen and do work on the other half, like I'm doing right now. Only, right now I'm posting on Digg instead of completing my programming homework....
- tomz17, on 03/12/2008, -1/+14I find that the desktop + laptop combo works best for me... Powerful C2D desktop with tons of storage, memory and 2560x1600 screen... Ultra portable x60 thinkpad for travel.
- zxcv12, on 03/12/2008, -1/+13That article is just stupid. Nobody "needs" two laptops. If you have the money and want an extra laptop then go for it. Just don't tell me you need it.
As far as screen size goes - I like a 19-20" on my desktop. Any bigger then that I have to practically move my whole head to see all of it and that gets tiring. For laptops I like the smallest possible screen that is usable. 13" Macbook is just about right. - fjc8, on 03/12/2008, -0/+11Because placing a laptop on a docking station is much easier than plugging in multiple cables.
I have power, keyboard, mouse, monitor, network, and various USB cables connected to the docking station on my laptop. Although it doesn't save a whole lot of time, it makes things a lot cleaner and stops cables from falling behind my desk. - akatherder, on 03/12/2008, -0/+11Let's say you have X amount of work that needs to be done. If you can maximize your productivity and get X amount of work done in half the time... you have more time to chill the ***** out.
Although, most people in this scenario are probably just workaholics. - waspinator, on 03/12/2008, -3/+14I've got a laptop for watching videos, surfing, and games and a tablet for taking notes in class. If they made a 12 inch tablet with a powerful graphics card and a high resolution screen I would only need one.
- muniak, on 03/12/2008, -0/+10This also makes the most sense to me. Why use a second laptop if you're just going to keep it in the same spot?
- yensed, on 03/12/2008, -1/+11$100 says the guy who wrote this did so on his 5-year old Dell Desktop and has never used a "Smartphone" in his life.
- capiCrimm, on 03/12/2008, -0/+10no laptop is replacing my triple monitor desktop anytime soon.
- RedGreen1, on 03/12/2008, -0/+9Docking stations exist, at least in part, so that you do not have to disconnect a bunch of wires when you want to take your computer somewhere. What your suggestion would defeat that purpose.
- Twee, on 03/12/2008, -3/+12Why not just buy a powerful laptop and make it your primary computer? You don't need a docking station nowadays anyways because laptops such as my MacBook Pro have all the ports built-in -- a DVI port for an external display, FireWire 400/800 for a hard drive, and bluetooth(or usb) for a separate keyboard and mouse.
- saxreturns, on 03/12/2008, -0/+9Even if you were, it wouldn't be too much fun tearing bits off yourself just to pay for things...
- mikelgan, on 03/12/2008, -1/+10Since I'm the guy who wrote this, can I bet? -Mike Elgan
- grodrigu, on 03/12/2008, -1/+92 is the new 1
- mtekk, on 03/12/2008, -0/+8yeah, but a really cool docking station would allow you to put a 8800GT in it and play games while docked, yet get the advantage of an IGP when mobile (extended battery life). Too bad nothing like that exists yet.
- blackfeathers, on 03/12/2008, -5/+13tell that to the tsa
- supermanred, on 03/12/2008, -3/+10The writer of this article just lost ALL credibility with me. One laptop is fine, plus a smartphone (I wont say iPhone so as not to get buried to kingdom come) :)
- srusting, on 03/12/2008, -2/+9As one of the frequent fliers he's talking about, let me assure you that the two drink minimum will always surpass the two laptop minimum in order of importance.
However I do lug a MacBook and an Acer craptop around the country with me. - milkmit, on 03/12/2008, -0/+7Absurd.
I do some pretty heavy graphics work (Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, mostly), and my single 17" Macbook Pro (2.33 duo, 3GB ram) is more than enough for me. Granted, I need to dual on a second screen to be as productive as I can on a desktop (20" ViewSonic LCD at home, 30" Apple Cinema at work)...but a second laptop and especially a desktop is way, way out of the equation.
It's highly mobile (well, as mobile as a 17" laptop gets, anyway...), and I can choose when and where to do my work; at home, at the office, or even on the road. Another laptop would just be more ***** to carry for no added benefit, and a desktop is absolutely useless. - Tenlow, on 03/12/2008, -1/+7Plus with a $400 laptop, you would need more than one to be productive.
- Tenoq, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6Gah, trolls coming out of the woodwork again. And it's not even a Mac article. *sigh*
- inactive, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6Don't feed the retard troll.
- inactive, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6that would be unfair
- sintaxi, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6you put it on your crap?
- qwerter, on 03/12/2008, -0/+5So, in other words, the laptop market is saturated, and the only way to sell more is to convince people that one laptop is one too few?
- DarkDx, on 03/12/2008, -0/+5@iloveazngurlz: that's *****, I've compared laptops and macs with similar (or even the friggin same) characteristics and they cost almost the same (sometimes only a 50$ difference, and that 50$ difference will give you nice build quality and uber support), if you don't like mac os x, then is fine but don't spread ***** about how macs are overpriced. Don't believe me? Go and choose the black macbook at apple.com then build a xps m1330 in dell with the same cpu, ram (2gb, 4gb apple ram is overpriced I admit) hard drive and all that stuff, and guess what? Only a 49$ difference.
- RedGreen1, on 03/12/2008, -0/+5Amen brother. I fly with a nice desktop, with dual 1680x1050 displays, and an ultraportable X61s myself.
- saleem, on 03/12/2008, -1/+6ask Macbook Air buyers I guess
- isunktheship, on 03/12/2008, -3/+7It's not a necessity, it's just that since Apple users spend $2k on their single laptop, we PC users can afford to buy 2 or 3 lappys that are just as fast in its place.
/macattack - PSUstoekl, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4One of the best comments I've seen in a while.
- gluecode, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4I agree. I have two laptops. One for porn and one for everything else including work.
- mikelgan, on 03/12/2008, -1/+5Again, I'm the guy who wrote this and I'll take that bet. -Mike Elgan
