- crash331, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18And after all that trouble, you manage to get like 4 FPS? No thanks. I'll run fear at 200 FPS instead of 204 FPS and keep my money.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Did anyone else notice ram prices getting higher? Bout a year ago, 2x512 was about $70. Now you cant find it for under one hundred. : (
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I see I'm being dugg down for stating fact. Here's a more specific link if that's the only thing that will convince you. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820151022
- netdroid9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I said the same thing and got dugg down.
It's probably because people are making less of the old RAM and more DDR2 RAM. - Jimtac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Industry analysts have been predicting for a while now that there would be a rise RAM prices. Mainly because of the higher demand vs. supply issues. Especially with OEM's gearing up for the planned release of Vista, with it's greater system requirements for a decent "Vista Experience". Plus there is also the fact that RAM is not a highly competitive market, with only a few major players, who have in the recent past been found to have been fixing prices (although I would imagine they are really trying to not fall into that trap again), leaving the smaller boutique manufacturers to innovate at a higher per unit cost.
I also would imagine that since RAM speeds are getting faster all the time, there are huge dollars being spent to eek out every last MHz in speed boosts over the competition, add to that the transition from DDR2 to DDR3 and beyond, this would also raise the prices. Since Mom and Pop, don't really need or care for the latest, and greatest RAM specs, it's the enthusiast market that really brings in the big margins. OEM's may be the largest market, but they have volume pricing.
That being said I must have a couple of these kits for myself... It's been far too long since the last upgrade. - piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Jesus, I think people have some kind of grudge against goats today! Talk about harsh.
His comment was extremely relevant - innovation shouldn't be shunned just because it isn't currently fully utilised. - tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4:O is it...Memory 2.0?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The main reason this RAM is so expensive, aside from the custom PCB it uses that's beefier at the ground plane level to dissipate heat (doesn't add that much cost), is the "binning" that's done to the chips so they can build it with the parts that will run at its advertised/rated speeds and latencies. Yield is everything when it comes to memory cost. The yields (% of chips that can hit the requried speeds) are probably so low for these modules that it drives the cost through the roof. And you're right on, crash331. The added cost of this upgrade would be better spent on something practical.... like a 30" wide screen LCD maybe? Yeah that's the ticket!
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, better RAM can help your CPU overclocks a lot, considering you have a good cooling system.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3goat, i was referring to ddr400. I hadn't even checked ddr2 prices.
I'm guessing netdroid is right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2going overboard is what's bad. if you just buy certain processors (not necessarily more expensive), you can get pretty good overclocking without even buying any extra hardware.
i'm running an athlon xp mobile ($70 when purchased 2 yrs ago) that's supposed to run at 1.8 ghz, and i have it overclocked at 2.5 GHz with a $10 heatsink. - piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5don't know why you're being dugged down goat, your comment was a valid contribution to the discussion.
++digg - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It isn't like they trash the memory that doesn't meet the specs for this product, they simply reuse the less then perfect memory in on of their other product lines.
- UrlorJkron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow, that RAM is looks almost as big as an SEC CPU.
- AeroSquid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This Geil kit can kick the crap out of it for $200 less ;)
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=85002-56 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1aka almost anywhere?
- P5ycHo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great. More Fans.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1High tech Ram... so much $$$ for so little performance increase.
- spoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The fact that it runs a 2T command rate really, REALLY sucks.
- WhiteFlye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly, the more bigger and more complex the semiconductor device the more difficult it is to maintain high yields thus driving the cost of the device up. These prices will eventually fall however as fabrication processes improves yield (e.g. by moving to larger wafer sizes).
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -13/+14Yeah you can, but it's still more than $70.
http://newegg.com - colelt1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just built a Core2 E6600 system for a friend, with a asus p5n32sli mobo, and 7900gt.
There is nothing that great about those timings, the computer I built for him has G.skill ddr1000 (that had no problem hitting 550mhz), under timings of the rated 4-4-4-5-2T
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231077
spoop, I may be wrong, but all DDR2 I have ever touched is 2T. My DDR1 NF4 Lanparty box will run 1T, but if you fill all the memory slots you have to switch to 2T, which sucks because I have 2x512 right now, and may bet another 2x512 soon. On AMD 4800x2 box I have G.Skill DDR600 @ 2.5-3-4-6-1T - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4For my money I'd run standard performance RAM and just keep the case well ventilated but this stuff is pretty swank looking memory!
- lagrange, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yawn. Overclocking and tweaking and extreme cooling is all so last week.
For what it costs for 'extreme' gear you can just add another CPU or double your memory, or proabably a whole computer.
Retro fun, sure, cutting edge interesting? Nope. - aussiebuddha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yeah man, why are they modding down goat. he's point is valid and he expressed it in a very good way.
I hope digg doesnt get full of stupid people voting up or down just cos they feel so and without a cause just to piss people off. - goat77, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7Eh it's widely misquoted. It was really just a device to get my point across that we shouldn't just limit innovation because of current practicality for the consumer.
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7See above... Hell if I was trying to directly quote Bill Gates I would have put "-Bill Gates" after the quote.
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -9/+41.11ghz!? That's just faster than my GDDR3! Sign me up.
- crash331, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3What does that (erroneous) quote have to do with anything said here?
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5@goat77: it was "640k ought to be enough for anybody" :P
And the quote is supposedly false.
(Assuming you're quoting Bill Gates) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Let me guess where you are from. Britain, the US, Singapore or South Africa.
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -19/+8"You'll never need more than 64kb of ram!"
What is Digg?
