- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -9/+205Whoa. But I wouldn't quite say success though; looks more like the boobie of Sauron to me.
- purple, on 10/12/2007, -10/+110You talk about Sauron's boobies like you seen them more than a few times.
- Herald42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+75One coil to rule them all.
- tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+75Seriously though... you guys ever notice how awesome boobs are?
- DDRRE, on 10/12/2007, -12/+75Whoa.
Great success.
Very nice. - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+66You mean it doesn't look like Peter Jackson's rendition of the Eye of Sauron.
- Xanadude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+60And in the dorkness bind them!
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52now here's a real Tesla coil - http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7922453680380751905

- sauron256, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30That looks nothing like my eye...
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Congratulations, you are this year's recipient of the Most Irrelevant Comment award.
- biff198, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Huh?
- bubba9999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Since it's purple, it looks like the eye of Sauron's gay brother, Leon.
- DatoeDakari, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22So what, it still looks cool.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Tesla Coils - Awesome
LOTR - Awesome

- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Wow, that whole site is awesome. If I go to Australia, I'm tracking that guy down.
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10from the front page:
'Above shows a Tesla coil with rotating long breakout point looking dramatic on time exposure of 22 seconds. The "Eye of Sauron".' - Switch22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I actually clicked comments just to post this.
I can not hear telsa without imagining a Russian dog getting fried by one in ra2. - ronsanto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Wow, that thing looks big enough to take down a prism tank
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9There's a bit of current, and it's very high frequency (radio frequency) alternating current, and can cause damage internally.
Furthermore, parts of the tesla coil (the primary coil, for instance) have very high amperage current. If the discharge spark should arc to the primary coil while also arcing to your skin, the high amperage current will flow through the spark to you, and you're burnt toast.
That said, there are thousands of people who build tesla coils for a hobby (myself included), and you never hear about serious accidents (there are a few on record from many years back). Still, I wouldn't be surprised if they become outlawed in the US, for "our own safety", and because politicians just wouldn't understand why anyone needs to build and operate such a device. After all, it has wires. It might be a bomb. Better safe than sorry, and all that crap. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11[Taking unfair advantage of the Reply button]

- Ben - clemsontiger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Does this not remind anyone else of Red Alert and playing as the russians?
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8..because making a fake spark in Photoshop is *far* cooler than a real, 2 meter long Tesla Coil "sparky-thing"..? (Although it's maybe *slightly* safer the Photoshop-way)
- Ben - nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8post it
- BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10You must come from one of those weird regions where they pronounce everything weird. Around here we'd say "tes-la coy-ill"
"Say whip again"
"Huwip"
"Whip"
"Huwip" - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ugh, reading comments like that, I wish Photoshop and such didn't exist - I want to go back to the days when people believed photos of fairies, and giant fish and such were real, and didn't just think "Pfft, I could do that in [Maya|Photoshop]"
- Ben - Samsong, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I want to touch it so bad...
- meetthescott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Anyone have a high-res version, by any chance? This would make a great wallpaper.
- Ap31r0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think this post needs atleast one more comment about C&C RA2.
tank circuits 4tw - roomforpanic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I think I was at that rave.
Now, here's the real tesla - http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000000OS2.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg - slipperman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I desperately want to know what that means...
- Tesladownunder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am Tesladownunder. Glad you all (mostly) liked the photo apart from the breast fetish guys. The photo turned out really well and only took a few hours modifications to my 4 inch TC and an hour of setup and shooting.
I take about 5000 photos a year of which 1 in 10 - 20 makes it to my site. I do a lot of long exposures in low light situations. Even though this makes it look more dramatic than it is in real life, a running Tesla coil is still dramatic. If you don't think so, get closer. I am about 5 feet away with an earthed object in front of me so "fairly safe".
Yes I stood still for 22 seconds.
No bugs were harmed in the shooting of this photo.
The photo did not even have to be exposure adjusted or cropped as I got these right during setup. Definitely not photoshopped. I can show you the out takes if needed. I have added a 6MP version to my site for wallpaper - feel free to use.
I have plans for a really good photo with more universal appeal. I am gathering stuff and constructing this weekend.
Cheers, TDU - hags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Probably think all of http://images.google.com/images?q=long%20exposure type pictures are fakes too, huh?
- samstafford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is probably a double exposure, at worst. Nikola Tesla used them from his colorado springs labs to increase response to his inventions. the effect is the same. get over it.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Eye of LRon. Tom Cruise has one in his basement.
They could have used this in The Prestige instead of CGI. - egotripping, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Whenever I hear about Tesla Coils I can't help but think about the glory days of Command and Conquer: Red Alert.
Ah..the good ol' days. - NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So what would happen if you jumped in it?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You would travel through time and space.
- Tesladownunder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I will be tracking you.....

Call me crazy, I thought the comments page was for COMMENTS. Not just "lol thats awsome lolz."
I dugg this story because it's a pretty cool picture, but I fail to see how two concentric circles can be defined as "the eye of Sauron."
Do you want to justify this to me, or do you want to digg me down and attack me for not automatically praising everything on Digg? - lordbyron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From Hackaday: the picture is a 22 second exposure of two rotations of the 7 foot aluminum tube.
- TylerLavite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2tesla coils are grounded. and are such a high frequency that the human nerves can not feel it and it is not harmful. if you ground it correctly. if its done wrong you might not know and it could kill you. i have built them before.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I decide to watch the lotr trilogy today and all of a sudden there's an article on it..... somewhat.
- Throlkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not a long exposure, the man on the left of the image isn't motion blurred.
If it's not 100% real, then the most it would be is maybe 2-5 exposures layered over each other.
But that's also unlikely. Because the man would again be blurred, or if they erased that area the rest of the shot would be more underexposed. - johnpowell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@everyone
I think the comment refers to a segment on the daily show about Dick Cheney. The one where Jon wears the hunting outfit and the Darth Vader mask. -
