- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They do blast terrorists with a sonic blasting device: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_range_acoustic_device
They have also been aimed toward the public by our own police. See: republican national convention. Let's not forget the carnival cruise ship that had this one too. - riskjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When you consider a chainsaw runs at about 110 decibels or so,
and an average concert is at about 120 dB,
and pain begins at 125, jet engines are at about 140...
From what I remember, the math in decibels is exponential as they increase
so imagine what 180 dB would be like... if the loudest sound possible is 194 dB. - kd5ftn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow, that thing is way unsafe.. I wonder what kind of distances the builders listened to it at?
As you should know, sound is measured in a logarithmic scale, and 180dB is massively huge. In comparison, a Jet engine at 3 meters away is about 140dB.
Suffice to say, if you actually "heard" this truck, you'd be deaf about now - EDantzer, on 10/12/2009, -0/+2lol, nice though there only was 1 episode
- Bobcat7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder how far it would blow the windsheild if they ever really cranked it up. That thing is nuts.
- opnotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seems like it could have Military uses. If you had an enemy in a cave for example... it might produce sickness throughout the mountain in that cave and any other cave it was connected to. Maybe that's silly though. I really wanna hear it. With earplugs of course. I imagine that at those DB's... even low frequencies could break some ear hairs.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41. Buy bread truck
2. Install 60" subwoofer
3. Rake in the "dough"
/Sorry, I promise to never do that again. - dwhitbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder what the frequency range is? Maybe I missed it somewhere in the article. Can this thing even produce anything in the audible range? It can probably pop your ear drums on a single excursion of the cone.
- Turminator999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hah their e-mail address is a .AOL. bah! But I must say that subwoofer would probably cause your eardrums to touch each other at full volume. When can I buy one?
- ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its like the amp in back to the future...lol
- Sardonumsei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool an article with my name in it makes the front page of Digg.
I remember drawing that thing on a napkin. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have known Richard for many years. This was a delight to see the interest generated again after so many years. Thanks guys
- burningheretic6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is fkn awesome. They should mount this on top of a tank and blast terrorists out of caves in Afganistan.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"so imagine what 180 dB would be like... if the loudest sound possible is 194 dB."
Apparently, above 194 DB, it is not even considered sound, as the human brain and ears can no longer process it.
It is just -- maybe brain hemorrhaging!
Music technology meets weapons technology!
...but cool article....digg...someone had to build it.
...and NO, the story is not a duplicate to me!
Are new diggers expected to go and read all the archives? - purplehaze420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2As if we've all seen every single tech story on the net... Who cares if its from a few years back... Still Dugg
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I want a Nano--tweeter...that can shatter your DNA on the molecular level!
( ...do you think I'm watching too much Star Trek?) - NobleForums, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If only this would fit in my car...
- karter74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OLD
- r3aper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It was built for sound off competition and was quickly banned. Clark and Navone are very well known in the car audio world and consult for several manufacturers.
- cjurczak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is cool, but quite old...I saw this back in the day at DB Draq in '98
- Pimpalicious316, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dimplemonkey: "We like the cars, the cars that go BOOOOOOOOM!
and we love the BOOOOOOM!"
yes! i am not the only person that likes that trashy song :D :D
~Andrew - ThomasW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The United States uses 21,600 lb Fuel-Air devices (aka vacuum/thermobaric bombs) to get terrorists out of caves. There are no large scale sonic weapons in use.
Enjoy the video link below it maybe worth a digg itself.... ;^)
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/moab.htm - brispet1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I digg this, I don't care that it's old it's a pretty cool technical thing that I've never seen before.
If not that what is digg for? - asplodzor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1DB Drag Racing is freaking awesome. Too bad those car's systems are designed chiefly for one note... It'd be interesting to watch a movie with the audio connected to that sub... several blocks away ;-)
- gabeN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Reminds me of Back To the Future...
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wander if you can distry a city with that thing?
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@ dimplemonkey:
"We like the cars, the cars that go BOOOOOOOOM!
and we love the BOOOOOOM!"
get the quote right! LOL
"We like the cars,
the cars that go Boooom
We're Tigra and Bunny
And we like the Booooom!
If you wanna DL it with BT, lemme know and I'll set it up for ya! - eyebits, on 10/12/2007, -1/+01 million watts... I don't think so. Hyperbole.
- kuyakew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i agree its a total waste of space and parts but man.... i play bass guitar and id love to try that.
- TridenTBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The 60"s subwoofer...What a waste of space and electricity and parts....
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This website is made with the uber-cool open source project called "Joomla". If you like what you see then check out www.joomla.org. Sorry, I couldn't resist the shameless plug. :)
- boxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Do you think Marty McFly can break this one too?
- PDAIsAOk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1running on 1 point 21 jiggawatts...
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I got a head-ache just reading about that thing!
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0We like the cars, the cars that go BOOOOOOOOM!
and we love the BOOOOOOM! - cbdgr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wasent that fetured in back to future?
- allstar255, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0digg effect
- c-nug, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Stupid.
- sabbac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Doc. Brown would be proud!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wiggers are awesome
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Where's that woofer that looked like a fan?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I don't see why anyone would build something like that. Sure it's 160+ ten inch subs, but seriously, I have never been to a concert with 160+ ten inch subs. Nor do I think this thing would work very good. It would just make shockwaves and give everyone chest pains.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'll take two
- veneficus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Dugg down / Digg effect / whatever
- Norseman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"I wander if you can distry a city with that thing?"
Stick it on helicopter, fly it low over people's houses and implode their windows and eardrums. It's close enough. - Yoda716, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I want to put this in the back of a truck and crank that thing. Id get like 2mpg because of all the power that thing would draw. Lol, this thing is mad crazy!
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I believe that sub was created in 1999.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0We need an "Is This Necessary?" option in the Digg reporting tool.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Digg effect.
Anyway, why would a bread truck need a subwoofer? So is that how holes develops in my bread? -
