Thanks to gamers, the desktop supercomputer arrives

computerworld.com — Nvidia today unveiled a workstation it calls the Telsa Personal Supercomputer at the annual Supercomputing 08 show here. The Tesla sports 960 cores, almost 4 teraflops of performance and costs less than $9,995. It achieves that speed and price by using four graphics processing units (GPUs), each of which has 240 cores.

In the mid 1980's I was working on a mainframe supercomputer system that was mostly ECL logic, required a total of 40 BTU tons of refrigeration capacity for a fully configured system, and cost something like US$15M for a full up system, before maintenance contract. We could sustain a peak of about 266 MFLOPS (133 MFLOPS by each of 2 vector CPU's). In those days, that was about as good as it got.
