- MBHoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+36It's not a brilliant article really, is it?

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26FTA: He says he doesn't like it yet calls it a great keyboard. Mac apologists suck.
- jjlee, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22who buys a keyboard based on tossability?
- b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19psst- if you look below the screen, on the other half of the macbook, there is actually a keyboard *built in*
I know, it shocked me when I found out too. - pathy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20I love how an article about a thin, but otherwise generic, keyboard can get to the front page. Only if it's Apple, eh?
- pixelsoup, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Nope.
US$49 USB
US$79 Bluetooth - eddyc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13WTF? He's sorry for not liking it!
- MartyMcSly, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18I am typing this on one I bought last night from the apple store in regents street. If you like the macbook keyboards you'll like this one. It is beautifully made, feels expensive, has responsive keys and saves a whole lot of space on the desk. I actually have it hooked up to my PC at the moment and haven't yet hooked it up to my MBP yet. I am really holding out for the wireless one for my MBP so that I can lounge whilst using it with my projector! Go and try one out at the store - I have a feeling it a love/hate thing with these keyboards although I'd say they'll grow on a lot of haters out there! The only downside (short-term I hope) it that I'm looking down at the keys a lot more to check I'm gonna type the right character. I'm expecting this to change rapidly as I get used to the keyboard though. I for one highly recommend it!
- EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Plus the new one tends to look ridiculously badass on your desk.
- championchap, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Clicking the green button didn't express it well enough.
Good sir, I love you. - ballistik, on 10/10/2007, -8/+14I love the new keyboard. I think the old model was too klunky and outdated. The mini keyboard is so portable with my new MacBook. I love it!
- Radan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I was going to say "Well, it's in the Apple section, genius", but apparently, for some reason it isn't... Really, keep the Apple stuff in the Apple category.
- EricZBA, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Please post Apple related stories in the APPLE section so they can be filtered out by those of us that don't give a rat's tail about this.
- stacky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Actually, the logo is missing from the 'command' key.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6How so? There are plenty of better performing motorcycles at lower prices.
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I have some big meat hooks, and when i tried this thing out at the local fry's here in Washington, i found myself mashing more than one button at a time.
So i would say, if you have big hands, skip this one. - ortucis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Is it really THAT hard to post apple news under the 'Apple' category? There is a reason why most of us disable Apple section, don't try to bypass that reason.
- dinkola, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I have heard much about the noise the keyboard makes. I know from one workplace there was a wide variety of Dell keyboards. Combined with some people that really like to whack their fingers against keys and really deep clicky keys, it can make for a noisey environment. I know one small office I worked in was really quiet, apart from one or two people that liked to really whack those keys - it nearly drove me mad.
- Aupajo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The trouble with the labelled keys is, if you change them around in your settings (like I did for Dashboard and Expose), the symbols become useless and unhelpful.
But that's what the Optimus is trying to fix, right? Right? - jrbrewin, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8and we all know, with macs, it's all about the looks only, isn't it. *rolleyes*
- Radan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Haha, I love how everyone who says anything positive about the new keyboard gets dugged down, no matter how constructive their posts are.
Personally, even though I haven't tried the actual keyboard, I'm really looking forward to it. I have never really liked the traditional keys on a keyboard, probably because I type more on my laptop than on my desktop computer. It's too bad however, that they removed the full size Bluetooth keyboard, though it's not hard to see their reasons. - ozydingo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Probably the good thing about the small depth-of-depression and grooveless keys (and it wouldn't surprise me if this were at least part of the motive) is to ease people gradually more towards non-tactile keyboards (hey, Jobs "hates buttons," didn't we hear something about that about that in an iPhone review?). But getting used to typing on something without as much tactile feedback could get people more ready to switch to virtual and projected keyboards (though I don't really think they'll be replacing real keyboards for a long time to come, if ever)
- jeezus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have to agree -- if you're going to act as a reviewer, apologizing for not liking something drives me up the wall. Take a stand, defend it; if you're proven wrong, admit it. I have to agree and call this guy an apologist.
Buried as lame, - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I haven't used this one, but the one in my MacBook doesnt bother me much at all. If you look at most keyboards, those spaces essentially exist on those, too. They key is kind of tapered at the edges, so the top surface you actually touch is spaced the same as the MacBook keyboard.
- eihwaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes, IT HAS the little marks on F and J, just like the ones on the macbook keyboard.
But that doesn't mean that you don't need a little time to feel really comfortable with it. I always have to use a keyboard for 2-3 days before getting back to 100%, it's quote common i think. - dave1021, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Typical Macinista. "Thank you, Steve, may I have another?"
- sephiroth965, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Have you ever tried a projected keyboard? You're fingertips start to hurt from knocking againtst the surface you're typing on. They're really terrible.
- Royal0rleans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The guy meant that it was a good keyboard, though he is not a fan of 'laptop' style key resistance.
- polyphonic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2homophobic much?
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"Probably the good thing about the small depth-of-depression and grooveless keys is to ease people gradually more towards non-tactile keyboards"
...which is not a direction in which we should be going for the simple reason that it is *physically bad for you*.
Not only do they damage your hands and -- they also force you to keep track of you hands using your eyes, which means you have to worry about *how* you're writing, rather that *what* you're writing... and your productivity is now cut in half.
You're right in thinking it will take a long while before tactile keyboards are replaced -- they're tactile for a good reason: becuase it's far better, in every way, than a non-tactile solution. The only thing that stand a chance to replace them is direct neural links. - swimmingbird67, on 10/10/2007, -8/+10i love the new keyboard, i got to use it for the first time today.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Same reason they obsess over anything else with an Apple logo on it. You can read about their complex here: http://psychologytoday.com/rss/pto-20070514-000006.html (actually quite a good read)
- DiggDuggDone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Wow, the reviewer spent all of TWENTY minutes on the new format keyboard and deemed it unsuitable.
When I switched from a desktop to a laptop it took me well over a week to adjust to the Pismo keyboard.
Buried as lame... - mlostracco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1There's a setting in the trackpad preferences to "ignore accidental input" that you might have turned off if your hands are touching the trackpad and moving the cursor around.
- NeoRicen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Not no reason really, the dashboard and expose keys are to the left of the keyboard where your hand usually is so you don't find yourself letting go of the mouse or moving your hand across the whole keyboard. nice touch if you ask me.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2"The only downside (short-term I hope) it that I'm looking down at the keys a lot more to check I'm gonna type the right character."
This, I assume, means that it has no divets, bumps, or other distinguishing features to tell you that your fingers are in the right position (e.g. the standard F- and J-key markings)?
If so, then it doesn't matter how "good looking" or "nicely constructed" the keyboard is. It is a piece of junk.
Anything that forces you to use anything other than your fingers to keep track of where those fingers are means that they keyboard is horribly designed. Period.
If it *does* have some finger-orienting features, then maybe it might be worth considering, but if it did, you shouldn't have needed to look at the keyboard at all... - smartyhall, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Sometimes people use portables with displays that change the normal arrangement of things -- e.g. projector -- or due to personal preference, one prefers to have a keyboard that is farther from the monitor or is in a different orientation. (I, for one, prefer to use the keyboard tray on my desk when I'm sitting at home with my Mac because of wrist problems.)
- EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4I found it to be great. I love my macbook keyboard except that hy hands hit the touchpad and it can move the typing-point back up a few lines and ruin everything.
BTW: I bought a Gigabit Airport Extreme (just happen to need a new wirelss router). It's uhh... gigabity. I have it mounted on the wall. I wanted the apple logo on it to be properly oriented but that means having all the wires come out thr top. I took the sucker apart, no chance at flipping the logo part of the plastic. That part is thoroughly glued on. - DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6This may be difficult to comprehend for you so I'll use an analogy. My mom makes a great Thanksgiving stuffing that everybody raves about which even I have to admit is good even though I don't like stuffing. Comprende?
- astrosmash, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Tactile feel-wise, if it's just like the MacBook keyboard then it's the best desktop keyboard Apple has made since the Apple Extended Keyboard II of the early 90s, by a long shot.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Because some people (like me) use it as a desktop machine at home that also happens to be portable. It sits about 3 feet away from me and is desktop-spanned to a 22" widescreen monitor. Then I use an external keyboard and mouse on the keyboard tray on my desk.
Not too hard to imagine this situation, but I figured I would help you out. - Error601, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Keyboards are commodities. People are always coming up with useless changes to commodity items trying to make them sell above commodity level. Just take a look at the silly stuff on the deodorant aisle.
- brianbennett, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Dugg for Model M reference.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Doesn't say much, unfortunatly... :(
- FamilyGuy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I really think the one main thing that matters the most about this keyboard would be the portability. I really just can't believe that this keyboard is getting so much attention though. Just like most of Apple's product. Yes, the product is wonderful. I'm not saying it isn't. I'm using an iMac as I type. The keyboard is getting almost as much attention as the iPhone is getting right now though... I'm not at all bashing the keyboard: I've not even used it yet. But lets all remember folks, it is just a keyboard in the end, at least that's what I've read on the many reviews so far.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'll buy a stencil set and put it back on there.
- sephiroth965, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It's only $50. Not bad for a decent keyboard.
- Exec, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The Keyboard works fine for the most part on Windows PCs. If you wish to use the media keys properly you'll need to use some keyboard remapping software from 3rd parties.
