Swedish Teen Hacks Microsoft Zune's DRM and WI-FI. (RIAA = owned)
zuneboards.com — "Unconfirmed sources report that a young Swedish hacker named Nutzipper has defeated the Digital Rights Management on Microsoft's new mp3 player the Zune. Our source also indicates that the hacker has also compromised the Zune's Wi-Fi music sharing system. The Wi-Fi hack apparently allows users to secretly transfer music from any nearby Zune."

How To Bypass The Zune's WiFi Sharing DRM

DVD Jon Fairplays Apple
,----[ Quote ]
| DRM-buster DVD Jon has a new target in his sights, and it's a big piece
| of fruit. He has reverse-engineered Apple's Fairplay and is starting to
| license it to companies who want their media to play on Apple's
| devices. Instead of breaking the DRM (something he's already done), Jon
| has replicated it, and wants to license the technology to companies that
| want their content (music, movies, whatever) to play on Apple devices.
| This may not be good news for iTunes the store, but it could make the
| iPod even more popular.
|
| Jon Lech Johansen became famous for hacking encrypted DVDs so they would
| play in Linux when he was 15, making him the target of criminal charges for
| which he was eventually acquitted...

Microsoft sues over source code theft

QTFairUse6 Updated Hours After iTunes7 Release

Microsoft's war waged with FairUse4WM
,----[ Quote ]
| In September, Microsoft filed suit against the hacker(s) responsible
| for one such DRM-stripping program, FairUse4WM, purportedly created
| by the now notorious Viodentia. Other such programs reportedly target
| the DRM protections of the iTunes Music Store and AllOfMP3, among
| others. What will become of Microsoft's lawsuit? What does this have
| to do with "fair use" and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
| (DMCA)? What follows is a brief overview in two parts. In the first,w
| e'll discuss current issues surrounding fair use with regard to the
| DMCA, and in the second we'll approach Microsoft's legal actions
| against Viodentia for FairUse4WM.

- All4not, on 10/12/2007, -3/+68This might be the best possible thing for Microsoft. They had to know that the 3 play/3 day sharing limit would kill their wireless feature, so give the RIAA what it wants, but make it easily hackable. I'm not saying I want a Zune, but you have to admit it makes them more appealing now.
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -18/+13Well, Gates has admitted publicly that he doesn't like DRM...so I doubt there will be an effort to stop this, but there will be fake suits against unnamed people to make the riaa/etc think they are working on it.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11If they don't do anything about it, though (whether they want to or not), the RIAA will come down on them for not securing their music players against theft. And we all know how easy a target Microsoft becomes when it comes to litigation.
- joerod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I agree, it seems to me that when something gets hacked then it becomes more popular. I think this is because it allows people to create homebrew apps and other useful utilities.
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22As to RIAA suing MS over this, it all depends on the language of the contract.
We are talking about MS here. They have learned a lot about legal contracts and lawsuits in the past. Heck, they could buy the RIAA with their cash reserves! - ronmexico, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Since they're in bed with Universal they'll have to fix this.
- Nachoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8wow.. can you imagine the RIAA sueing Microsoft? Now that would be pretty decent match up.

No, he is assuming news is news when it's strictly confirmed as news.
||||||||He didn't say - When it's confirmed it can be dugg||||||||
A digg is a sign of interest or a bookmark. I digg things I disagree with, but was interested in. I digg things that aren't 100% pure verifiable.
I am more likely to digg an amusing upcoming story before it hits the front page - mainly because if it interests me, ill help it interest others - whereas if it hits the front page and then I see it, I feel less obliged to digg it because I play a smaller part it letting others see it. People have different philosophies and standards about where they place their digg. That's one of mine.
You might be more conservative with what you digg, but that's your business. - ardenr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Good luck with that, here's some more on the submitter...

- fintheman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15If Microsoft was smart, they would let one of their developers leak the information in how to do this.
This is what would make the Zune be a full out hit.- arkmtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Exactly - Not to imply this is the case in regards to the Zune, but were a company to make something hackable from the get-go, it'd be brilliant marketing.
The company would be able to release a hackable product, call it secure, then leak code for breaking protections & adding new features onto the Internet - And unless the RIAA discovered some explicit inter-company documentation that proved intent, all responsibility would fall on some anonymous product-hacker uploading .ZIP files to a forum over a Tor connection.
It would seemingly be out of the manufacturer's hands, and the product would be hyped greatly in enthusiast communities for it's excellent hackability, and sell like effing' hotcakes. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm not quite sure how it would be smart to open themselves up to a multi-billion dollar lawsuit from the RIAA, which is what would happen if it were found that Microsoft in any way supported open wireless sharing and indeed wireless "stealing", literally grabbing songs of a player without your knowing (as this story indicated even though indications are it's not true)...
