- Probatus, on 05/08/2009, -0/+251U Rackmount is not a blade server.
- billricardi, on 05/09/2009, -0/+8This isn't news, this is an advertisement. And this isn't even a blade server. Finally, they're nowhere near first-to-market on this product. Atom rack mounts have been around for months. Buried.
- MarkusX, on 05/08/2009, -0/+8Home Media Delivery System?
Good idea, it's just the right size to install 10 of these in my kitchen pantry. ;-) - jeffness, on 05/09/2009, -0/+6a blade server is a server which fits inside a chassis that provides power, network connectivity and other services to the blade unit which contains only motherboard, processor, hard drive(or other card).
they are not defined by how "deep" they are. - ZhiZaki, on 05/08/2009, -1/+6I can finally try out clustering for the price of 1 "average" server.... w00t!
- oldhick, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4Buried as inaccurate.
- Hydraulix, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4For those who don't know what a blade server is (the author included) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_server
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4why not just get 1 good CPU in a server and avoid all the hassle, unless you just want to learn how.
- VSack, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3Not "Blade" technology.
I guess I fail to see how this unit would provide a better IT solution than buying a mediocre regular server, throwing ESXi onto it, and running 10 virtual machines.
If it needs its own box, an Atom unit isn't going to fulfill the hardware requirements. If its requirements are low enough to use this sort of thing, then virtual offers a better cost/benefit. - inactive, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3no a 1u power supply of even 200w will have a tiny annoying little fan in it :)
i hope i am wrong. - martyFREEDOM, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3Singlehop has been selling these as dedicated servers for months...
- molochi, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3Not only is it not a blade, but it's a waste of rack space. There are half width 1U itx cases that only cost about 100 bucks.
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2that little box would be great for music studios with all the usb controlled gear(with a core2), but that power supply is probably noisy as hell.
- adgrou, on 05/09/2009, -1/+3small , low power , low price...sure cuz atom cpu's are cheap
- crossmr, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2I've done clustering about a half a dozen times and I hated every minute of it.
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2right price means you will see more and more people installing racks in their house/apartment.
I have a dead corner in my den....Perfect spot for it on a 4 foot rack. - xdevit, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1What are these Atom cpu's compared to ? are they any better than a Celeron ?
Or more specific can they handle a somewhat large sql db ? - ZhiZaki, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1Mainly for the benefits of learning how....
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1[?] Runs Crysis
- Myztry, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1Minature servers could be quite handy. Ideally you could have little headless servers that run using Power Over Ethernet and just plug them into convenient places like inside appliances. They could serve up readings and allow setting of your hot water service for example. Kind of like PLCs except more computer like (HTML front end/etc). With just USB ports which can provide near any I/I capability.
We already have that in devices like routers and IP cameras, but a cheap mass produced generic solution would fill a niche nicely. - inactive, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1its a fanless design for the processor and it only needs a 200w PSU. So it can come with a PSU with a fanless design.
- jabab, on 05/09/2009, -5/+1It's nowhere near as deep
