Please don't crush my fantasy?
I want to see an Open Source GPU.
Is there hope for a truly non-proprietary computer?
For that, I would surely weep tears of joy. - Serinox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wonder how long it takes them to come up with a multi-core variant?
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uh the Multicore variant is the OpenSPARC T1 chip, with 8 cores.
What these guys did was take one of the cores out of the T1, and made it an independent processor. The only thing they're not telling you is that a single T1-derived core is quite slow, and very, very low power, making it an excellent embedded processor, but no so much a desktop computer processor.
That being said, if they can get to ASIC with it, it'll be a worthy competitor to all of the ARMs and MIPS chips of the world. For now, it's FPGA fodder. - sfty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A *cheap* Sparc box would be cool!
- mitchellchris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well this sounds like a pretty good idea to me.
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Great! I mean, Hey, the RISC chips are the future, right? Oh brother...
- technopoop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0with Sun it has always been love and hate relationship.
