- ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -5/+113You guys do realize you buy any notebook hard drive and stick it in your ps3. That's one of the few things I applaud Sony for doing with the ps3. With the 360 you have to buy Microsoft's hard drive but it's the only one that will work, and it's over priced like hell. At least with this you can just go to newegg and grab a cheap notebook drive. The article only states that it will have a larger drive, not any other specifics on what other features they will implement. Besides, production costs may have even dropped by then to allow for a price drop, and a new $600 model with the larger drive, nobody knows for sure.
Here is a 200gb drive that is the same cost as the 360 120gb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149059
Granted, I really don't know why you would need so much space, as this just seems to be another pissing war between Sony and Microsoft. Go ahead and digg me down fanboys, just accept that Sony actually did something good for a change. - Harrison88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+71Hold your horses ladies. They said a 200GB Hard drive, you can obviously buy it on it's own.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+74It is extremely retarded to think that a piece of technology will take 10+ years to be obsolete.
The piece of technology you bought last week is now obsolete. - fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+53A 200GB hard drive does not obsolete a 60GB hard drive.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20This just in : Sony developing ____GB PS3.
Can we stop with these stories now? - Somnambulism, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20What was Microsoft's reason to buy a 360? You can buy a Wii and a 360 for almost the same price as a PS3? I haven't heard that excuse since the announcement of the $480 elite 360. I'm not even going to go into the HD-DVD drive.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I think they'll justify it by saying "If you want more HD space buy the 200GB model" Remember, with the PS3 is you can do a lot more with its HD than other consoles: You can cache games, install Linux and copy unencrypted videos, music and photos to it. Plus of course you can do stuff like downloading demos ad buying content like the 360.
- Somnambulism, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Someone isn't familiar with the multimedia capabilities of the PS3.
- donkeydrop, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16What's with all the hate. You can already swap out your PS3 hard drive for a 200GB or any size you like. No overpriced hard drive or fancy kit you have to buy to get your data off the old drive, either.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -33/+45What about those who actually bought the 60gb? Their console, which was supposed to last 10+ years, will soon be obsolete. :/
- l4wl, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20It makes no sense for them to do this when someone can upgrade the hard drive themselves. So ***** stupid.
- walnoj, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16You all know... I realize that the popular thing to do with Sony right now is to just bash and bash and bash for no reason whatsoever... But most of you all doing the bashing are completely stupid. And I do mean "completely". If you read the quote that Bloomberg has from Fukuoka, it reads like this:
"It's in line with our strategy as we had planed to choose models based on consumer needs,'' Fukuoka said. "The larger model, which retails for $599 in the U.S. and is $100 more expensive than the smaller version, accounts for about 90 percent of sales....The company is also considering introducing the model with a bigger hard disk..." [Via Bloomberg]
Please tell me where in that sentence he stated that the rumored 200GB model would cost more than the current $599 version. It sounds to me like he's talking about introducing the 200GB hard drive into the slot that the $599 model offers now, and selling that in place of the 60GB model. Given that they just canned the 20GB model of PS3, I see no reason why they wouldn't move the 60GB version down to $499 and the 200GB model in at $599. God damn, some of you are dense. Destructoid is an awful website for stating it's a fact that Sony's considering a "more expensive" SKU. There's no evidence to support that. And all of you jumping on Sony over a story that may or may not even come to fruition are even stupider. - rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I can see a headline now, "Microsoft to sell 250gb 360 hard drive for $300 to compete with Sony's PS3"
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -12/+21Anyone else noticing that if this continues, Nintendo's underlying strategy just might work out? Let the big guys duke it out by trying to one up each other, while Nintendo swoops in and cleans house with the confused customers.
- ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11A 200gb 3.5in drive may cost $80 but a 200gb 2.5in drive (which is what a ps3 uses) costs $180, the same as the 360 120gb drive.
This is the only 200gb notebook drive on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149059 - bhive01, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15The only issue is, shouldn't they be concentrating on selling us the old one first before shipping a new SKU? Didn't they just get rid of a SKU? Isn't 600$ still too much for a console for most?
- 2gooder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Their IQ is low because a Sony employee was quoted saying they are looking into putting a bigger hard drive into the PS3?
Wow, you are irrational. - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What's to work on? I thought the thing took any drive you put in it.
- bhive01, on 10/12/2007, -16/+24I think they'll put a mudkipz on it. That'd be worth it! Let me show you my Pokemons/ PS3!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10About 2 of the games you mentioned came out in the first year(Or are even ***** out period).
- volacide, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I'm fairly certain this isn't Sony just trying to "justify" raising the price, where does that mentality even come from? What about the PS3 has given you that impression? The PS3 sits at a price point just right for all you're getting, that is for sure; HDMI, Blu-Ray, WiFi, Bluetooth.
Everyone keeps bitching about this being Sony copying Microsoft since the news of the 360 Elite with a 120gb HDD and how this bigger harddrive is worthless and all that.
Well isn't it completely ironic that all the stuff that Microsoft is adding in the Elite is already there in the PS3, and not only that, but it's all there even in the basic model of the PS3.
If Sony can release the 200GB HDD in at a logical price then that would be very cool, but the fact remains, it doesn't really matter, if I really want to upgrade my HDD, I'll just go buy a laptop one. - sherwinn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12How about working on making the damn system affordable.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Probably sometime next year. The first year of the 360 was full of lame ports too.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Now if they would release this, with a lower price tag, then I would buy it in a heartbeat. But if they see this as an opportunity to raise the price even higher(which FTA, they are..) , then no thank you.
- RoroCo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The one place it makes sense is an artificial way to drive the price down. Space on drives are cheap. They can throw a 200Giger into the base unit and sell it for the same price as the 60Ger. Granted, it would still have the 600 dollar scar on it, and it would piss off early adopters as well, but it would make sense for them to do that.
If they add an even more expensive SKU, then they are shooting themselves in the foot. - Sanchez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9In other news, rumors appeared today with claims that Microsoft is working on a 320GB hard drive and it will be released this christmas.
And so the cycle of 1uping continues. - DoTheFandango, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm stupid, doesn't the PS3 have USB jacks? Doesn't the 360 have USB Jacks?
There should be a way of using properly formatted external HDs that don't cost 3 times the MSRP. - walnoj, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Yes. I'm quite sure it's Sony's fault that Midway's game registered in at 250MB. Also, Sony hid Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction and plotted 9/11. Ken Kutaragi was in on the whole thing. I saw it with my own eyes. Tool.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And in other news, angry lynchmobs form in front of the Dell factories as they release a new latitude featuring a larger HDD. You people need to grow a ***** brain. The PS3 platform is essentially the same, if some prefer to buy one with a larger HDD it doesn't make the 60GB obsolete.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+81. Okay, Sony and Microsoft needs to stop this whole "my hard drive is bigger than yours" thing they've got going on here. It's not good for consumers and confuses the common person (especially as to why anybody needs it).
2. Sony (unlike MS) actually lets you replace the hard drive yourself without hacks/mods. So why would they need to do this? Microsoft is the only one justified in upping its storage capacity. For PS3 owners, they can upgrade themselves.
I think moves like this demonstrate why Nintendo's Wii and DS consoles are outselling everything else. It's not that Nintendo is getting incredibly better - it's that Sony is getting worse: losing sight of what is important in a game console. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5There are USB ports on both systems. On the PS3, you can hook up external storage for just about whatever you'd like. On the 360, you're out of luck.
- walnoj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Your argument is extremely flawed. You're saying that if Sony took the power supply out of the console and made a brick, it would automatically make the console run cooler? Well, maybe so, but that'd be fixing a problem that doesn't really exist. There's a lot of things to bash Sony for with PS3, but the hardware itself doesn't seem to be one of them. PS3 is evidently quite durable. That's a lot more than I can say about Microsoft's 360, which has a massive external power supply and still manages to overheat.
- DoTheFandango, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You see, that's ***** stupid. I was seriously going to buy a 360 next week until I found that out right there. There's no way in hell I'm going to put down money for a 20GB HDD that I will inevitably fill up with videos and saves. The 120GB HDD is going for 179.99, which is just as much *****.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is a rumor from a blog. They say "It could happen!" about the price. Sony might be a lot of things, but they're not deaf. They know people bitch about the price, and I'm sure they'd love to make it the cheapest console and sell a lot more of them. Releasing a more expensive unit would be the last thing they'd do, but upgrading the expensive unit and keeping the price the same could happen.
Chances are they will lower the price at some point in the year to come regardless. But who know. It's a really fun game console and I really recommend you check one out personally if you can; not just at a store, but at a home. The Six-Axis controllers are very much underrated - they're awesome! - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5How about some good games.
- Tyr7BE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How are they working on a new 200GB hard drive? There's not a whole lot to work on. You take the old component out and you put the new one in. It's not like it requires any new drivers or firmware or anything. It's identical to the 60G, but it has more space.
- SharkyTech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hooray for one-uppery.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Working on a 200GB drive"?
There's not a lot to it. You can do it yourself.
Buy PS3. Buy 200GB 2.5" SATA drive. Put 200GB 2.5" SATA drive in PS3. Select format in menus.
Done. - walnoj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You would prefer a power brick so large, that you could actually be charged with possession of a deadly weapon with?
- dougzerx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6a 200G model does not obsolete any PS3 model since the hard drive is an upgradable standard laptop hard drive. The manual gives instructions on how to replace it. Now, I cant find a 200G laptop drive but I can find 160G ones that many have already put in their PS3's. External USB drives work as well so the sky's the limit !
- ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Looks like Microsoft and Sony are getting into a pissing contest.
...and the consumer is going to get wet. - mytruckhasdents, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yeah, that makes sense since they're just flying off the shelf right now...
- ravi7791, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The PS3 can store all your music, digital photos, applications (Linux), movies and other documents (Linux). Plus, HD downloadable games must take up some room.
Anyways, about the pricing. They should lower the price of the 60GB to $499 (or $449) and sell the 200GB for $599. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love when people own themselves by posting completely inaccurate information. It just proves the point I might otherwise have to make. Thanks Ghiren.
- rick2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Why dont they just do us a favor and tell us just where to buy our own and where is cheapest... we dont need you to install them and make whole new consoles for us thanks!
- walnoj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Well, why aren't you up in arms over the 30MB size of UMK3 on Xbox Live? That's more than the original filesize, isn't it? Or could it be... And stay with me here, I know it's difficult for you fanboys to keep up with the rest of us... That due to encoding the existing game to run in a maximum of 1080p versus 720p/1080i UMK3 on Xbox, as well as having to come up with their own networking solution and online features since there's no unified service on PS3 contributed to the heightened filesize? I mean, is that a possibility at all?
- knite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have a 60 gig PS3. I have 20 gigs reserved for Ubuntu, and 15 gigs used up from multimedia, pre-loaded game content and downloadable games. If you do the math, that's 25 gigs free.
I think people are forgetting that downloadable content is coming, and when gigabit ethernet is used to its full potential, it will become a reality. HD content is not small folks. They will take up space. I think 200 gigs is a good start to store HD content. I think Sony is introducing the 200GB drive because most people don't know that you can use any notebook drive in a PS3. - co72, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3uh, competition is good for the consumer.
unless you're the type of cat who digs gettin' pissed on and are using your analogy to indicate a pleasant experience, in that case, whatever floats your boat. - knite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ummm, you don't have to open up the PS3 to upgrade the HDD. There is a slot that you can open for easy access.
- namelessted, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7ahh yes, you are right. it is a 2.5" HDD. my bad. regardless. the PS3 is overpriced in general. That is not to say that i think it is worth the large amounts of money that M$ is charging for their HDDs, that ***** is gay too.
