- allaboutdatiki, on 12/28/2007, -3/+94Did Benjamin Dover, the senior vice president of rear projection technology find a new position?
- Akraz, on 12/28/2007, -7/+46I think Sony's been takin it in more than just the rear.
- savagesteve13, on 12/28/2007, -2/+31Its a shame, as the SXRD (LCos) Technology is vastly superior to the color wheel DLP system.
- shauncullen, on 12/28/2007, -12/+36Unfortunately, the same can't be said about their video game division.
- RogerStrong, on 12/28/2007, -0/+20Where do you think lawyers come from?
- solarsavior, on 12/28/2007, -3/+18Bummer, love my SXRD, but alas technology marches on.
- se1zure, on 12/28/2007, -3/+17i don't think nintendo makes tv's *****.
- Timbertron3000, on 12/28/2007, -3/+17For anyone who has dealt with their "customer service" department before, they give it just as well as they take it.

I tip my hat to you, as you win "t3h internets" for today. - rheaume, on 12/28/2007, -4/+11isn't it sad when a console that bricks so often still ***** beats your glorious black monolith?
- ldog, on 12/28/2007, -2/+8No idea what that meant, but go Suns!
- Assezdefromage, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6If you love you don't need to buy a new one do you?
So don't worry about it. - djh816, on 12/28/2007, -2/+8don't worry about it. it's his sad attempt at a pun off of the title.
- sittered, on 12/28/2007, -4/+9Yes, sixty-nine.
- wilf_brim, on 12/28/2007, -2/+7For those that aren't aware, Sony's rear projection LCoS (they call it SXRD) are probably the best rear projection TVs out there. In a "cost per screen size" comparison the rear projection LCoS and DLP are the winners. Unfortunately for the makers, the gap has closed rapidly, and the long term headaches (bulb issues, optics) are now not worth the hassle. I had a DLP but got rid of it after it crapped out twice. Got my l3wt back, too.
DLP will remain the technology of choice in front projectors, including commercial theater applications (where there is real growth potential and real money to be made), like this bad boy from NEC:

2048x1080 resolution, bitches. Of course, it costs more than a luxury car, but sacrifices must be made. - xXShadowstormXx, on 12/28/2007, -5/+10Over rated? You fail. Go play in the sandbox.
- chiefbandit2200, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4that was a bit random...
- Dimensio, on 12/28/2007, -1/+5Unfortunately, what happens if one day I need a repair part?
- WhoDoneIt, on 12/28/2007, -1/+4I logged in just to digg you. Thanks for the laugh after a much needed vaca with in-laws.
- scbysnx, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3that my friend.. is a person who does not know how to use the reply button
- Peepsalot, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Samsung's new LED blacklit DLP sets do not use a color wheel. LEDs of different color can flash on and off to produce the same effect, without the disadvantages of a spinning wheel.
- mweflen, on 12/28/2007, -3/+6Agree with commenters above. It's not a fanboy statement to recognize that Sony's SXRD technology consistently wins product ratings against DLP and LCD RPTV. They also compare very favorably to plasma flat panel and easily best LCD flat panel in terms of picture quality. And you can get a 60" SXRD for $1500 right now, too! I guess I'll start stocking up on replacement bulbs for my 50A2000.
But, not to fear, I am sure Sony will continue using SXRD panels in their very successful line of front projectors.
I guess rear projection TV is falling to the form factor appeal of flat panels. Which is silly, since the price and the picture quality of RPTV are better, and most people need a cabinet to put all their components in anyway, so they're not really saving space if you put your LCD on top of it.
That said, I suppose my next HDTV will be an OLED. Maybe in 5-10 years. Until then, viva SXRD! - alydanny, on 12/28/2007, -1/+4Great. I just bought a 56" rear projection today. I feel smart
- ChileanGoD, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Stupid Sony hate/love comments aside... In the article they mention the Hitachi and Canon partnership. What happened to that? Would love to have some news of those SED tv's.
- vv97, on 12/28/2007, -5/+7Love my KDS50A2000 1080p TV. Great number of connections. Looks good with HD programming, gaming, and Blu-ray movies. Sony is making a huge mistake.
- mweflen, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2I think, unfortunately, this means we will probably see more "me too" LCD panels, as well. "Microdisplay" Rear Pro TVs (Not CRTs) are a complex technology which required a lot of engineering to make look great. LCD panels, on the other hand, are something nearly every company thinks it can do well - shoot, you just buy an LCD panel from one of the big mfgs, slap some fluorescent lamps behind it, and you've got yourself a TV, right? I think having fewer product categories out there is bad for consumers in the long run. BUT, consumers were apparently not supporting microdisplay RPTV. At least not Sony's offerings. Which is kind of nuts, considering their quality. Sony dropped the ball big time with advertising - if they had put forward the marketing effort that TI has with DLP, I doubt we'd be seeing this article on Digg. It seems pretty apparent that Sony was divided internally on which tech to back. Their LCD line has been advertised up the wazoo. Then, their RPTV line was folded into their "Bravia" brand. I guess the writing was on the wall that an internal struggle was about to be won by their LCD group. It's too bad, because SXRD kicks serious ass - I'd take any of Sony's SXRD sets over any of its LCD sets, any day of the week. Overall, I guess this is a marketing move that makes sense for Sony. If thin is in, for whatever reason (certainly not picture quality), then they have to go where the market takes them. c'est la vie.
- yournamehere, on 12/28/2007, -2/+4i love which ever is a better purchase. currently that would be the Sharp Aquos.. although i do own a Sony widescreen WEGA
- betterth, on 12/28/2007, -4/+6Seconded, and I own a rear projection Sony TV and love it :P
- diggrim, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2I hope they'll still make projectors. I got one of their 720p projectors and it was nice...but I decided on an LCD screen instead
- mweflen, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2You may be thinking of CRT RPTVs, which have a very narrow "sweet spot" for viewing angle. Microdisplay RPTVs have viewing angles equal to those of LCD flat panels (though not as good as plasma or CRT tube sets). I own both, and can vouch for this.
Also, microdisplay tech is not "inferior" or "outdated." LCD RPTV uses the same technology that LCD flat panels do, with greater miniaturization and extra optics for projection. LCOS and DLP are recent innovations, which have only come into their own in the past 5 years. I hardly would consider this outdated or inferior. If anything, LCD flat panel technology is more "outdated" given the longevity of LCD technology and lack of innovation in lighting sources. - loyx, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3Sony has been doing pretty bad lately but that doesn't mean they still don't make some really nice, great priced products. I got the sony mdr 7506 headphones for around 80 bucks and they're the greatest sounding and most comfortable pair of headphones i've ever owned.
- ChileanGoD, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Just two seconds of google gave me this:
http://www.sed-tv-reviews.com
It seems that Toshiba (not Hitachi... my bad) is out of the partnership and no SED tvs will be made until the patent disputes are solved. Crap! - pacman122, on 12/28/2007, -1/+2I'm real surprised that you thought anyone but me would actually read your comment and I dug you down. Life sucks when you aren't in the top ten comments.
- lateralus, on 12/28/2007, -1/+2Ron Paul makes HDTV's? Sorry.
- shiv68, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1I have the same model as yours, It is a great TV!
- scbysnx, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1but if he wanted another, say for another room or *gasp* a newer one, that would not be possible. He loves his sxrd and would like the option to continue loving the technolodgy is, I think, what he was trying to say.
- rakslice, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1I was about to, but then I saw the word "stops" in there...
- s1mph0ny, on 12/28/2007, -3/+4Sony wouldn't have to worry about it either way, unless Ron Paul is running for president of Japan too now.
- saisumimen, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Wow. Lots of good comments today. Over in the "gay rugby" thread somebody suggested renaming it to "rubgy". I guess everyone got what they wanted for christmas.
- cloudyprison, on 12/28/2007, -1/+2I think I hear your controllers crying to be recharged, why don't you go plug them in?
- philhatesyou, on 12/28/2007, -1/+2The sad thing about that isn't about Sony though, it's what it tells corporations about how much you can ***** the customer and get away with it.
