- fani, on 10/12/2007, -12/+33Its kinda surreal.
Mac Mini wasn't the first mini PC. But every new mini PC is now compared to Apple.
Apple just happened to set the standard here.
Even the iPod wasn't the first HD mp3 player. But they set the standard there too.
They set the standard on the aqua/glassy look as well.
Apple has been doing very well lately. Kudos to Steve Jobs. Truly a visionary.
Like I was telling my friend this morning - Windows is raw but crudely productive. Apple is stylish, sleek and productive and now a trend-setter - Godric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18This site has better pictures:
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/02/22/shuttle_xpc_x100_xposed/ - hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Nah, the Mac mini is that size... this is as the poster said, more like a ream of paper. It IS more powerful than the Mac mini, though, since its extra bulk can house a dedicated graphics card and a full-size HD.
- F1R3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Geez, get off the whole mac mini thing.
Its better than saying something like "Hey... they already did it so lets not even try".
If someone has a good idea, you don't just ignore it because they got there first.
If its a good idea you can't afford to ignore it or your customers will just go where they can get what they want.
Some people don't want a mac. Plus nothing stops you from putting linux in it if you hate MS. - BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12They just lost < 1% of their market, I'm sure they are dissapointed
- robounix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I remember when these were called laptops. :)
- Zukunft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Very nice, I doubt they'll have that out in barebones though.
- jboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11If its cooling is any decent it would make a nice mini server
- godbout, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Considering that Shuttle has been specializing in making relatively small computers years before Apple's Mac Mini was around, I think that your comment is pretty invalid.
- codyg1985, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Looks like an external optical drive.
- mikm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Apple wasn't the first company to make small-form-factor computers. IIRC, Shuttle was shipping SFF PCs years before Apple released the Mini.
- CosmicJustice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, add that form factor and a flat panel monitor and you essentially have a laptop.
- Jarda, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19God, just reading these comments makes me want NOT to have anything to do with Apple... These fanboys are completely brainwashed.
- weebs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7nice. I have a Shuttle-X S-Presso machine and I love it.
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Help me out here, please. I'm relatively new to digg. The parent post got 18 negative digs for commenting that the case looks like a pizza box. And yet, the post below mine, observing that it looks like an NES, gets 26 positive digs. Why? I understand the concept of peer-moderation but, as a new member, I'm finding it challenging to get my head around what makes a comment warrent a negative digg. TIA.
- F1R3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Man these are neat, you could easily put these in all kinds of places.. no more removeable hard-drives, removeable computers instead! Stack them up and make a cluster, fuel a multi-screen display, put them in your car...
I can't wait until there is some word on pricing, I don't doubt that that will dull my enthusiasm a bit.. - landincoldfire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I kinda like the size, the 512MB would have to be upgraded to a Gig right out of the box. Other than that it would work for a surfing machine, could probably handle Sims2 without a issue.
- triska, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I don't get it. All that effort into building a flat case that looks nice, but make it so deep it's forced to sit to the side of a monitor taking up as big a footprint as a desktop case, and put the optical drive so low it's forced to sit far back from a keyboard just so you can change discs.
Insanity. Don't designers think of the simple things? - Godric, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11What's worse: appreciating industrial design or trolling the internet?
- hecatomb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Why does everything need 4 in one memory card readers? Oh well, as long as its quiet (and I can get it in bare bones) I'd be interested.
- esoterica, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Also one of the pictures of the Shuttle clearly shows a DC input, which indicates that it's encumbered by a power brick as well
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8and the company says "we wanna be more like Apple, let's make a mini"
Yea.....Shuttle released Small Form Factor PCs before the Mac Mini so....You're an ignorant waste of space. - Dasme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8barlo_mung: I wouldn't say that Apple never invents. They are, however, great at taking a crude idea and making it work.
Take the iPod for example. Other HD players at that time were in the form factor of a Discman. Apple created something small and sexy looking. Because of that choice they invented a new market for music players.
I'm not a huge Apple fan, but I can see the genius in their marketing/development. - LemonHerb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wow I really like that one, looks good.
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Move over, submitter, this monster is approx 3340 cm^3, while the Mac Mini is approx. 1380 cm^3.
(the Mac mini's power brick is not included - but the power brick is still pretty small) - thetron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree. Its a widescreen laptop without the screen
Thus allowing the 3.5inch Hdd to fit in - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I much prefer the tiny box type over this
- BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10"2. It isnt a mac" which means they get access to the 95% of the desktop market that apple isnt in. How does this not make it a threat?
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Instead of building 'killers', why don't these companies focus on building a a fresh new product that people want? IMO, building a 'killer' product is already admitting defeat.
- swakdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10And by "sexy" you mean "anorexic, albino ZIP-drive with unnecessary case design 'features' that take away from an elegant simplicity (ala Mac mini)"
- thenargonne, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14WTF, why do pc makers insist on boxy, ugly and unsexy designs? I just don't get it.
Is it pride or something? They can't be this stupid. - FoxHunter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I purchased one of shuttles barebone shells and boy do I love it. As for this system... well im not quite sure.
I mean it looks better than a mac mini (just my opinion). Its size would be great where deskspace is limited or perhaps in an entertainment system. Still, seems a bit TOO small for my tastes. Im intrested in seeing if this little box will sell well or not. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7looks like a beta max player from the 80s. dont get me wrong i liked those. especially the sony one
- ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It looks like a document scanner.
I'd prefer a compact cube shape over a long flat shape. Why not take a little more height and reduce the footprint? I think most people would prefer that. - kismac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5bah... mac mini still looks cooler
- EricAnderton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3::chuckle::
I suppose you could just order the Mobo all by itself... - MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sweet! Looks a bit like the Revolution without the angled stand.
- craigosbourne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4looks very nice reminds me of the sony PSX that released in japan, and Mini itx is a good site aswell , with strange things like computers built into model cows :-)
- kydd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6mac mini still looks beter.
- sock2828, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Ummm does anybody see any resemblince http://psychocorp.net/noticias/fotos/NintendoRevolution_front3.jpg
- systemghost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nice, looks like a good alternative for people who don't wish to run Mac. Shuttle has been impressing me for years.
- Dasme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Meh, it's larger then a Mac Mini. If I was going to buy a small machine, size would play a huge factor. Height isn't as huge an issue to me as footprint.
It does look nice though, reminds me a little of the Nintendo revolution. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Good artists create. Great artists steal." - Steve Jobs, referencing Picasso
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah yeah, I love Shuttle. I had one of those before I built my new computer with an XG Dragon case. Shuttles are a little hard to work on if you have big hands, but I'm a small girl, so it was easy for me.
- alittlemelty, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Ummmm... Yeah. I'd say the Mac mini's not moving anywhere. This thing is fugly. Platform wars aside, what a POS.
- sygyzy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I bought the original Shuttle when it came out. It was amazing. Still is. Looks like they'll be gteting my money again, soon.
Though, I am not sure I want to pay fo the Duo Core. - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5why do these devices constantly have a dissapointing appearance. The mac mini and some swedish designed ceramic clad media centre pc are the best ones i've seen so far.
- NineTailedFox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Go ahead and bury me, it just proves I'm right..."
Could you walk me through your logic there? I'm not following you. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Apple is so early-2000s. Gameboy Micro, DS Lite... Nintendo is the new Apple.
