2) Don't ever buy from Best Buy
3)Monster Cables are 1000% overpriced
4)All HDMI cables either work, or don't
5) :| - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41Whoa, Apple is actually the 2nd cheapest.

It's a digital signal, so all those "features" Monster is pushing on you are crap and B.S. - redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20This place is just down the street from me and has the best prices on HDMI and any cables I need. I almost dropped 50 bucks for an HDMI cable for my 65 dollar DVD player then a guy at COSTCO turned me on to this place.
9 bucks for 6 foot!

- mdshw5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yes you definitely can use composite cables to carry component video. I have never bought a set of component cables, just used my plethora of leftover composite cables. For me at least there is no difference. Maybe if you have a very long run of cable they would not work as well, I don't know. For those that way you need special cables though, they are wrong.
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Best Buy 8' cable: 79.99
Best Buy 8' cable w/ employee discount: 7.85 - insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10My dad went to buy an HDTV and I told him to not buy any cables at best buy because they will rip him off. They wanted 120 for an HDMI cable, this site has a 6ft cable for 15 shipped.
http://www.s-video.com/hdmicable.html
A cable is a cable, and since it's digital all the hoopla about gold connectors and any insulation to prevent interference is garbage. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I got one from Fry's Electronics for 17$. The key is to get the one that doesn't say "for PS3". That is marketing term for "let's rape the public".
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I dunno who dugg you down, but $9 is an awesome price for a 6ft cable.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7people who cant handle the truth of digital signals against analogue dugg you down
- sencha5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Monoprice is perfect for any cables, hands down. USB cables for $3, HDMI cables for $12, and good VESA mounts for $25. Shipping isn't half bad to Canada either. I don't have any reason to lose money buying anywhere else.

$4.92! - DeathonWheels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5At first I was going to comment at how stupid you are. Then I realized you were trying to be funny.
- patw85, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6If people are dumb enough to spend $100+ on cables from Bestbuy I don't blame them one bit.
- bilbus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Ya HDMI cables are all the same .... save your money for the gold plated optical cables they sound so much better then the cheap glass tipped cables
- Eallan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Bought a 15 dollar cable shipped online. Overpaying for cables is ridiculous.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Similar situation for USB cables. Take a $30+ Belkin cable from Best Buy. You can buy THE EXACT SAME CABLE from MacMall/PCMall for around $8. You could order the cable from MacMall, on a Friday night, splurging for overnight FedEx with Saturday delivery, and still come out cheaper than buying that cable from Best Buy.
And if you don't mind generic USB cable (and there's no reason to mind them...), you can get the same length cable from Cyberguys for around $2.
So here's what I recommend to people who ask about USB cables. You *know* that someday, you are going to find yourself short a USB cable, and you are going to run out to Best Buy, and blow $30 for something that should cost $2. So be proactive. Go to Cyberguys right now (www.cyberguys.com) (or your other favorite place for assorted tech accessories), and buy two 15-foot USB cables, two 10-foot cables, two 6-foot cables, and two 3-foot cables, and put them aside until you need them. That will cost you less than $30, and should keep you covered for quite a while. - tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4becuase people don't research or scout around. best buy thinks they can overcharge for people not wanting to shop around.
- dt40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This sounds just like those overpriced extended warranties or sodas at fast food restaurants:
1) The store's real profit comes from these sorts of things; they make little or nothing on the "primary" items
2) For cables and warranties, they prey on consumer fear that you're not getting the best experience/quality unless you pay a little extra
It is rather offensive, of course, and I love it when schemes like these get exposed. - maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I know, i have no use for them, but i might just buy 2 right now.
- izzybomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Monster Cables are overpriced!? OMFG my world is collapsing!
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or you can pay $8 for 7ft at newegg, but hey, who's counting?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3comcast = free HDMI cables. I have gotten 17 of them now :)
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've used monoprice a couple of times. cheap and fast delivery
- babar77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, cables are worse. At least you have a 1 in 2 billion chance the lottery will actually pay out.
- dd240sx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3MONOPRICE.com is the ***** nobody beats them they are just awesome store
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The worst thing I saw there was a "digital coax cable" for $300 there (the ones used to carry DD 5.1 audio). Which is funny, because cables aren't digital - the signals are. You can use any old RCA cable and plug it into your DVD audio out and it will work.
I can see ripping off clueless HDTV buyers with fancy-schmancy HDMI cables, but analog audio cables? For $300? Insane. - Uranium118, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use monoprice cables, the quality is awesome. No need to buy all those over-priced cables.
- Dr.Gonzo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4eBay has them for under $10.
- drizzt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2www.firefold.com
- Sonic84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2goodwill: $1.99
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't buy a cable any place other then Monoprice. And I tell everyone else that are looking for cables to go there also. I've ordered cable from them before on a holiday and again on a Sunday night. I had a tracking number about an hour later. An hour later! On a Sunday night!
Hell, Newegg can't get me a tracking number on a random Thursday on an order placed that morning even with the extra 3 bucks they charge for "express processing".
And the prices / quality cannot be beat.
Yeah, I know I sound like a living advertisement for the place. But I was pretty impressed with the service and the prices. - nublet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gamestop marks up anything that's not a game 500%.
- tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2monoprice is an awesome place for cables. www.avsforum.com has people raving about how cheap and fast the deliver. it is like the newegg of audio video!
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I should put in a good word for s-video.com - I realized I didn't need the cable I ordered only minutes after ordering. At first I was worried that they ignored my email to cancel and shipped it anyway, but they didn't charge me for the cable and didn't ask me to return it to them.
So while every place is going to make mistakes now and then, s-video.com actually owned up to it. - tackhouse1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As others have said, its all marketing. Best Buy does the same thing with their $40 "gold plated" USB cables that you can buy for $1 online.
That said, here is an excellent article from PCworld that actually compares less expensive and more expensive HDMI and Composite cables. Its a much more scientific test, and full of useful info:
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,121777,00.asp - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3eBay is good for those things that retail stores STILL like to ream us on.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you can buy a TV with $250, heck you can buy a TV with $100 (USD prices)
- Philconners, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The overpricing of cables is almost criminal. I used to work for a wholesaler, and I remember comparing our cost for a regular Belkin printer cable (MSRP $19.95) vs the so-called superior Belkin "gold plated cable" (MSRP $29.95). Our cost for the regular cable was about $4, but our cost for the gold version was about $3. That tells you something about cable pricing. Monoprice rules.
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Heh. I think monoprice is suffering from the digg effect right now...
Anywho, I buy a bunch of component cables from them at a time. Not only do I usually use component, but they're basically 5, thick, RCA cables all bundled together - and there's no plastic piece hold them all together. You can split the cables off one another, so 1 component cable set is also a composite set (3) + L/R audio cables (2). - Ocelot13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3monoprice.com FTW!
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Also check http://redco.com for audio production gear like microphone cables.
- Philconners, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you sure there wasn't a mail in rebate for $230 with that???
- cptshamrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One thing the article doesn't mention is that if a digital cable connection works then its fine. No super expensive cable will create a better picture, if it works thats the best you will see, the cable will make no difference. But if the signal gets blocky and corrupted frequently then there is something wrong with the cable most likely.
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I feel the same. They charge a lot, but when the techs come over, I always ask to keep extra cables or whatnot. Usually works, too, since they're happy to just leave stuff behind and let me install the cable boxes myself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cheap HDMI gold plated cables work just as well as the over priced monster cables at best buy. Saving lots of $$$$$$, circuit city will try to sell them to you as well in a "package"
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib.php/page_id=362/form_keyword=hdmi/sortby=priceA/vendors[]=/popup1[]=10:1006
On the cheap. - sagemane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can use any kind of coaxial cables with RCA connectors to carry component video, you just won't get very good results in certain cases (e.g. in some composite cable sets the audio (red and white) cables are lower gauge which will result in two of the channels being off) and if the connection is bad enough it won't pass through 720p/1080i. Almost every common kind of analog video runs on good old coaxial cable:
- RF is one piece of coax for video and audio with an F-connector
- composite is one piece of coax for video only with an RCA connector
- s-video is two pieces of (mini-)coax for video (Y/C) with a mini-DIN connector
- component is three pieces of coax for video (Y/Pr/Pb) with RCA connectors
You could also take pieces of RF cable from the cable company, crimp RCA connectors on them, and use that for component cables, and in fact they would perform better than the crappy mini-coax cables that most manufacturers pack in.
But with component video you /will/ be getting a better signal with better cables, so you do probably want to go get some new cables anyway, whereas with HDMI and other digital signal paths it only becomes an issue if you're doing a long run or get a really cheap cable (you can still get image problems on a digital signal with cheap cables rounding off the wave and causing bits to switch over a long connection, but once you get a decent enough cable that no 1s turn to 0s, there is no room for improvement or need to spend more money). -
