- mikeophile, on 01/06/2009, -0/+18So you can use a USB 2.0 device in a 3.0 socket, but it doesn't look like 3.0 devices will work in the older sockets. Works for me.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -2/+16Memo to hard drive makers: We're all looking forward to USB 3.0, but if we're looking at hard drive performance, can you please retire the 7,200 RPM drives first and make 10,000 RPM standard for SATA?
I love my Raptors but having a corner on the market makes them a bit on the pricey side. - moo2u2, on 01/06/2009, -1/+11Instantaneous

- ClevelandBrown, on 01/06/2009, -4/+12I just came.
- PCGUY112887, on 01/06/2009, -1/+7It says it's supposed to be fully backwards compatible... maybe that can still fit in a 2.0 slot?
- Jok3r, on 01/06/2009, -4/+10My question is couldnt they have kept the standard drive shape?
- jason80, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6At how many Mbits/sec?
- Chris_F, on 01/06/2009, -6/+12Yeah, so manufacturers could take existing USB 2.0 cables and repackage them as USB 3.0 cables and charge $45 for them instead of $20.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5You're looking at the "B" end of the cable in that pic. Have you ever seen the "B" end of a normal USB cable? That wouldn't fit in a standard drive shape either.
- leif77, on 01/06/2009, -1/+6I guess that's that then...
- str3ama, on 01/06/2009, -2/+7I'll trade you for a picture of a pickle soliciting a potato
(yeah you read that right)

- TrevorDiggs, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4I totally digg this, I am a filmmaker and to have this throughput will be incredible and very interesting to see whether we can start seeing 4k direct to USB removable disk, and other huge bandwidth demands. Of course it will probably cost an arm and a leg for quite a while.
- mrBitch, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Why are you using USB 2.0 when existing FireWire 800 is faster?
Is your choice dictated by the fact that you can't control which computers you are sending HD footage to and so you have to use USB ?
If you are PULLING the HD footage through a USB 2.0 interface it sounds like you CAN control at least the hardware at your end.

"Question: So which products should I choose FireWire or Hi-Speed USB 2.0?
Answer: For all out sustained throughput, as shown above a FireWire external hard drive will provide the best performance. But for convenience and compatibility between multiple computers a USB 2.0 external hard drive would probably be the better choice (since practically every computer has a USB port)." - slicecom, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Will the speed still be highly inconsistent like USB2.0?
One thing I love about Firewire is its fast and consistent. When it says estimated 30 seconds left, it will take 30 seconds! USB2.0 could take anywhere from 29 seconds to 5 minutes. - rocke86, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3They should have the same socket, I'm guessing devices will operate at lower speeds and early devices will work on lower power. It appears the the end of the cable will allow old usb cables to be used in a pinch just leaving the usb 3 part open(why would the cable end be split otherwise).
Hopefully I'm guessing the only restriction is you won't get usb 3 speeds over old cables.
Some correct me if I am wrong. - jm1234567890, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4awwwwwwwwwww
- Chris_F, on 01/06/2009, -4/+6Lol, people are digging my comment down. You REALLY don't think they do that *****, because they do, all the damn time, and you still buy it.
- konataXchan, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Where's the video for me to get my rocks off to?
- afruff23, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2So you're telling me you're happy every time standards change?
- OutlawAdidas, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2I'm in the same boat. Pulling HD footage through a USB 2.0 is bleh.
- thebestjester, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2when i read your comment. i jizzed my pants
- OutlawAdidas, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2you too huh.
- DeathfireD, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1It can. The specs make it workable but you wont get the added advantages you would if you where running it on a 3.0 port. So even if Seagate puts out the first USB3.0 external hard drive no one will notice a speed difference since there's no 3.0 port reader yet. I guess they must be working on that too...or hopping other companys will have them out around the same time they make their hard drive available.
- risenphoenixkai, on 01/06/2009, -7/+8You can take my Firewire800 from my cold, dead hands.
…of course, 10 years ago I was saying the same thing about SCSI. - cquinnd, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Ludicrous speed.
- NeoMantas, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Well According to this: http://qdb.us/262095?%2F
it should be 1,687.5 TerraBytes/sec - daines88, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Is it still packeted?
- foxtails, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Why not use an eSATA connection, or a SATA drive in a removable cartridge?
- robbob, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1unless it pops up with the "are you sure ______" dialog box despite the <Yes to All> button you've been pressing repeatably
- elfprince13, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1and USB 2 just went
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+0You all lose.
