  • GRoper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This work, done by Luc Steels and his colleagues at Sony's laboratories appears to be the missing link for true Artificial Intelligence(AI). Yet here it is trivialized by jokes about dogs and the French, both whom, along with Steels' robotic research, are greatly underestimated. Let me lay it out for you:

    Language analysis and generation have been studied extensively for decades by AI researchers. But prior to Luc Steels' experiments, no one had _experimentally_ _demonstrated_ how language develops among intelligent agents. Steels' experiments are no less than stunning: in a controlled environment AIBO robots develop their own words and grammars for objects in their environment. All aspects of human language development are mirrored in these experiments: words compete for acceptance in the population, new words are created, and grammatical structures arise spontaneously.

    Contrast this with the W3C's Semantic Web effort, which has received much more serious interest and has proven much less fertile. In the Semantic Web there are multiple competing "ontologies" (roughly, data dictionaries wherein all terms are strictly defined by specialists from their fields). The rigid structure of the Semantic Web renders automatic translation between ontologies questionable if not impossible. Only a truly intelligent agent could resolve the disparities between most ontologies. And that is only one of the the things that Steels' agents explain and can do.

    Steels work is better than Nobel quality and IMO is the long-awaited key missing link to development of true AI. His work also raises the idea of a "robot culture", since it is in the context of a population of cooperating robots that language becomes useful. In short, when you look at Steels' work you are looking at the beginnings of true AI and in a few more years, you will see the "singularity" (when true AI breaks away from human control) approach, largely due to Luc Steels' excellent but under-appreciated work.

I wonder if sometimes they just can't admit that they're trying something for the fun of trying it, and not necessarily with bettering the world at the forefront of their minds.

    And no, I'm not saying robots are nothing but toys, just that they are FUN and not ALWAYS experimented with because of their utility.

Seriously, the first thing I thought of when reading this was that this had always been the only REAL difference between man and machine; that man can think for him/herself and machine can only do what WE tell them to. This, as far as I'm concerned, is a dramatic step in the developement of real, true AI, like GRoper says. Now, I am by no means an expert in any field related to this tech. but I am pretty sure that a group of robots developing their own language, by which they communicate!, is pretty F&#ing huge in the world of robotics. (any flamers feel free to let loose on me if I am waaaaayyyyyy off base here)
