- RogerStrong, on 11/05/2009, -16/+96They way that Apple fanboys dismiss every smartphone as a failed "iPhone killer", should we also dismiss the Mac in general as a "failed Windows killer"?
- evil-doer, on 11/05/2009, -9/+63nice review from an apple fanboy. he basically admitted its better in every way except for less (*****) apps and has more features, then comes to the conclusion that it "falls short of the iphone"?
- nonapp, on 11/05/2009, -6/+42Why is the iPhone considered the gold standard of mobile phones?
- swicken, on 11/05/2009, -0/+36Yeah, I didn't quite get that either.
He seemed to be touting all the awesome features of an android phone and the superiority hardware wise to an iphone, then said it falls short.
Makes a lot of sense to me. - sonnybobiche, on 11/05/2009, -5/+33Did anyone else notice that the author doesn't actually have anything bad to say about the phone? Why isn't it an iphone killer? Because it doesn't have as many apps? 90% of the apps in the app store are garbage anyway.
/iphone user - jakem1, on 11/05/2009, -4/+24Because it's made by Apple. That's it.
- Orbital101, on 11/05/2009, -1/+15That article is a load of crap. Aside from misinformation aplenty (for starters, since when is coverage blamed on the phone?), it's clear they're looking for a way to put a stand-out title on an article to attract eyes.
- joaob, on 11/05/2009, -3/+17CNet in the UK is that desperate for traffic?
- dualaudi, on 11/05/2009, -2/+15iPhone was cutting edge when it was first released (well we had all the technology)
But what would make an iPhone killer? I have the Sprint HTC Hero (android), and minus the no flash, it's a very kick ass phone... - BabyWookie, on 11/06/2009, -5/+15Because it is unmatched. Some phones have more impressive specs, some have more features, etc, but none of them bring everything together as simply, beautifuly and elegantly as the iPhone does.
- ziplizard, on 11/05/2009, -1/+10The above comment is neither interesting nor correct.
- orkinman1075, on 11/05/2009, -0/+8I definitely plan on checking this phone out for myself.
- collution, on 11/05/2009, -2/+10"The fact is, although the iPhone is the worst phone in the world, it's the best handheld computer there is."
While the second part is arguably true, it's hard for them to call it the worst in the world. What about landlines? You can't even carry those around (notice they didn't say wireless phone..). - Orbital101, on 11/05/2009, -3/+10Those who hoped the Droid would "kill" the iPhone are going to be disappointed, but... that doesn't mean it's a failure. The iPhone head start is quite huge and it'll take time before the market opens up to other offerings. The Droid may not wrest the iPhone's user base away from Apple, but it could go a long way to help the public see that the iPhone isn't the only good phone. Over time, if more of these kinds of products come out, the playing field will level. So yeah, the Droid isn't an iPhone killer... but it plays its role as a market-changer.
- thephosphorbox, on 11/05/2009, -5/+12Cool phone but the hardware just doesn't appeal to me at all.. Glad to see Android getting out there a bit more, though. More competition in the marketplace = win for all of us no matter what platform.
- macmcraeart, on 11/05/2009, -18/+25How do you kill the "Worst phone in the world"?
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/0,39029453,4930375 ... - swicken, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6With the hardware variety coming forward for the android phones I think they will eventually take over the largest smart phone market share. There will eventually be something hardware wise for everyone out there.
They're a better product really. I had an iphone and hated the complete lack of customization available.
I can do a lot with my android phone visually. - RogerStrong, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5@eatrains:
Actually, for years the Mac was *constantly* billed as a "Windows killer", in the same way the Android, etc., are billed as "iPhone killers". So was OS/2. ("A better Windows than Windows...")
@appleKKK:
What for? Why try to duplicate the iPhone? Why NOT put in the features you think people will want, and make it better? - sinurgy, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6It don't know which is better the Droid or iPhone but clearly it's close enough that it's debatable. However, I don't think anyone would debate on which is better between Verizon and AT&T.
- jv2k, on 11/06/2009, -2/+7Seems to be par for the course for every android review.
"The hardware is better/comparable, the OS is better, and you can multitask and change your wallpaper, but it's not quite as good as the iphone"
Everytime I read people dismiss these "iphone killers" as being inferior I wonder why. The pre IS better than the iphone and so are most android phones. WebOS and Android are better phone OSs as they offer more features and functions. The hardware on a lot of the phones are better too and the pre and android phones are offered on better networks(well t-mobile may not be better but it's cheaper).
I always read these reviews and leave them wondering what it is that makes the iphone superior. - sonnybobiche, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5It can't be flatter than the iPhone's keyboard...
- Zanneth, on 11/05/2009, -2/+6It's not an iPhone killer because there hasn't been an Android phone that has surpassed the User Interface of the iPhone. The overall experience is what makes the iPhone so unique, regardless of how many features the Droid has.
Multi-touch is a perfect example of this--the iPhone was one of the first phones to ever have multi-touch on a mobile device and the Android still has not quite yet added support for this yet. - mbraynard, on 11/05/2009, -4/+8Fatties should no longer be able to complain about keyboard sizes on these devices and instead say 'if you are a fat nerd with tree-stump fingers, you might have trouble with the keyboard' rather than outright criticizing the size of the keys.
I repeatedly see reviews where people complain about the size of the keyboards being too small for their 'large fingers' and try them myself to see there is no problem. - MacHarborGuy, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3the only way a smart phone could be considered an "iPhone Killer" is if it is able to grab a larger market share than the iPhone -or- have a higher rate of adoption than the iPhone has in the same timeframe.
Forget "oh but it has an app store", forget "oh, but it has a better interface", forget "oh it isn't locked down, it's an open platform". Only hard sales numbers and adoption rates will show if it could potentially kill the iphone's grasp on the smart phone market. - volcompimp, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3It's called patented not copyrighted.... And Android phones have multi-touch
- Zanneth, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Yes, as far as I know the kernel supports it too, but that's not my point! The user experience overall has a lot more quirks that make the iPhone much easier to use and make it feel a lot quicker too.
Also, I think despite the fact that the system itself supports it, things like the web browser and photo views don't support gestures yet. - Zanneth, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3They copyrighted their own technology, yes, but the concept itself isn't copyrighted. Just look at the Palm Pre.
- mbraynard, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3...though they do come in pretty handy...
- amoore2600, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Poor story title AND a poor review.
- Blackmamba7, on 11/05/2009, -2/+5Yet another Droid review from an Apple/iPhone fanboy.... meh. With all these "reviews" of the Droid floating around makes you kind of think that the iPhone fanboys are a little scared of the competition! LOL Oh well when it comes down to it I am still old school in that I like to actually have reception on my cell phone - you know, something AT&T's 3G network has problems with. There's a map for that! :)
- brathor, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3Subjective much?
- mrBitch, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2@ Orbital, RE: " .. The iPhone head start is quite huge and it'll take time before the market opens up to other offerings. "
The iPhone head start of two years is "huge" ?
Windows Mobile has a 10 year head start. Why is Windows Mobile not in the lead now? - brathor, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Simple: If I wanted an iPhone, I'd buy an iPhone.
- mrBitch, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2@ jv2k, RE: " .. Yes you can hack your phone and pray that Apple doesn't release an update that bricks your phone .. "
No iPhone has ever been "bricked" by a jailbreak.
Considering that you can just install the original iPhone firmware with one click in iTunes means it's NOT bricked.
When you brick a device, it means you can NOT recover it. If you can recover it, then it is not bricked. - jv2k, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2God forbid some people not have the fingers of a 12 year old japanese girl.
- nicktripp, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I don't disagree. I'm just saying that he did have something bad to say about it.
- sonnybobiche, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Specs don't tell you whether the phone is usable or not. My old LG Voyager sounded awsome on paper.
- mrBitch, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2@ sonnybobiche, RE: " .. It can't be flatter than the iPhone's keyboard... "
True, but it's interesting that "it has a real keyboard" is touted as a feature, when all the Droid reviews so far find the on-screen keyboard far more accurate and easier to use than the physical hardware keyboard.
Not much of a feature if it sucks... - mrBitch, on 11/06/2009, -2/+4That's a strange reason, considering almost all of the training consultants in our business bought an iPhone.
None of them care that it was made by Apple, none of them have any other Apple product.
They only chose iPhone because they saw what it could do. One guy gets an iPhone, and within a few months almost all of them now have iPhones... - globaljp, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2lol- jive, flow LOL so what your saying is android as an OS works better the OSX on the iphone?
- damack, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2As an Android owner and fan I don't mind the iPhone being considered the gold start for mobile phones.
I think with everything combined it does do it better than any other phone out there.
I think where Android has the advantage though is while it isn't as good as the iPhone in every department there are a lot more choices available.
In other words if you buy a Motorola Droid it won't be as simple to use as an iPhone but on the other hand it will reward you with more complex features.
Don't want a complex multimedia phone like Droid? Then Android gives you choices like the MyTouch 3G which are not very multimedia centric phones but are much more simple to use.
I do agree the iPhone covers all bases better than any Android phone I've used and I can understand why it would be considered the gold standard for most people interested in that market but comparing any individual Android phone to the iPhone is illogical.
Google designed Android as an operating system because they wanted to give you a choice as to what hardware you wanted to run it on. It isn't really designed for all in one systems it is designed to cover as many bases as possible. - mrBitch, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2RE: " Some phones have more impressive specs, some have more features, etc, but none of them bring everything together as simply, beautifuly and elegantly as the iPhone does."
That's actually closer to the mark than anyone else here has got... - JumboJ3t, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I don't know why every smartphone that is positioned against the iPhone-- or is even positioned as just an awesome smartphone-- has to be judged on whether or not it's an iPhone killer. I think that phones should be judged on whether or not they succeed at innovating and evolving the smartphone market, not whether or not it's better or worse than the iPhone. Who cares? If it's a great phone, it will attract its own following.
- globaljp, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Right, exactly. All the reviews say it does work well. I have yet to read anyone say they are running out to ditch their iPhone for a droid. Other than ATT sucking in some places there no reason to change. The droid is going to steal tons of marketshare from everyone but those who want an iPhone.
- sab0tage, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3What's wrong with a land line? They have much better coverage than mobiles and the sound quality is considerably better, they connect quicker, comfortable to use for extended periods of time, no dropped calls...
I couldn't do without my mobile, and I rarely use my landline to call anyone except my grandparents or occasionally my mum who doesn't answer her mobile at night, but as a device only used to talk to another person, the land line is nicer to use. - TDDebug, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2No, they patented gestures.
- pegisys, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Actually if you look at the release notes for android 2.0 it seems that they have unlocked multitouch.
"MotionEvent can now report simultaneous-touch information for devices that support it. Up to three pointers can be tracked simultaneously." - volcompimp, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Personally I'm all about the touch screen keyboard after using an iphone for
2 years. I ditched it for the HTC Hero which I love but admittedly the touch screen
keyboard isn't as good but I get more used to it every day. Hopefully
once they release Android 2.0 w/ SenseUI it'll be much better. - pegisys, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3I have no doubt that Android will surpass the iphone in the number of phones on the market, but I doubt there will be one android phone that does it.
- nicktripp, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I was pretty sure he knocked on the flat keyboard and said that that ergonomic factor alone was a big deal as smartphone use goes.
