- ferrariman60, on 10/11/2007, -5/+28[H] uses the best testing method online, and really the only one that matters: How does hardware impact your gaming? Benchies are nice for marketing, but they don't tell the whole story. These guys do. Great work.
- DigitalN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16third times a charm?
- 137Scene, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16AMD/ATI really need to get their skates on now if they're going to fill this performance gap.
- daphatgrant, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21"That website doesn't know how to evaluate hardware." LOL
Get your asses in gear ATI! - calebb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Did you read the article?

Crossfire HD 2900 XT's:
1. Turn off Full Dynamic Lighting
2. Turn down AF from 16x to 4x
3. Turn down grass density
4. Turn off sun shadow
5. Change lighting distance to lowest
6. Change shadow quality to lowest
...and even with all those changes, the crossfire setup was STILL ~20% lower than the 8800GTS in SLI configuration!! - Hangender, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Its sad to see ATI/AMD fall so far behind their respective competitors. It seems they just can't deliver.
- norman619, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Translation: They suck
- BrandonMills, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9ATI has its equivalent of NVidia's GeForce FX series of cards. In other words, don't waste your money on ATI this round unless someone is practically giving them away.
- thedraft, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Only a fanboy would buy one of ATI's DX10 cards. Nvidia clearly outclasses them atm.
- frgmstr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Uh, with our readers. :) If you are still gaming at 1280x1024 resolution, there are plenty of solutions in the market place. This week we will have a full on real world comparison of the the 2600 and 8600 from ATI and NVIDIA respectively. We have always covered mid-range and high end cards and will continue to do so. The fact is though, if you are going to shell out big bucks for a video card, you are going to need to shell out big bucks on a display to get the true value from the card. These high-dollar cards are for high resolution displays.
- 0mega, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7makes my life easier lmfao, i dont need to test best possible settings... just copy [H]'s and adjust for anything that may be a little slow due to system difference... pretty damn easy :D
- breaks, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8the only problem i have with [H] is that they don't test with a larger suite of games. however, with that said, what is presented as fact bares a level of detail and journalistic integrity second to no other hardware review site on the internet. maybe keep the test rig set up for a bit and add a new page to the review every couple days as i report back my findings? (i'll pay the shipping) :D
they even provide shiny apples now!
[H] = how to review hardware. any member of any technical forum with any merit has known what the results of this latest crossfire review would be since the card's inception; though i can't say i'm happy with the results. - gossipninja, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I respect hardocp for its pull no punches attitude. I hope they dont ever bow down to advertisers like so many other websites/magazines. I remember years ago when case windows and such first started coming out and I found [H], sucks i got forum banned cuz my friend, who i shared web space with, changed a pic i had linked in the forum to a porn image due to an image leecher.
- silencerider151, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5buried for using the term "MoFo"
- geoken, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I also prefer [H]'s testing method. It makes sense to me because it helps me decide what I'm actually sacrificing when I buy a lesser card. For me it's more important to know what settings I'll be playing at to hit my target FPS than knowing what FPS I'll be getting while running some arbitrary settings.
- norman619, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7dugg down for being an ATi fanboi
- yournamehere, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4when did they ever say that? give me a link
- HPCELarry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4A single 8800gts 320mb version will way outperform your two 7800gtx's. Its also all you need unless you're playing at a resolution higher than 1600x1200.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4# "ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX, doomed from the start."
* DailyTech
# "...the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT, in our opinion, is a flop."
* [H]ardOCP
# "Sometimes it has a hard time keeping up with a 320MB 8800GTS..."
* Guru3D
Look dude, if Guru3d has the most level headed negative opinion of a product, you can bet it sucks. Guru3d is waaaay nVidia biased and chocked FULL of fanbois. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Wow, those ati cards really suck
- elrechazao, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3look at those reviews and see how many use AA. None. Anyone buying a 400 dollar card plays with Antialiasing. So all those benchmark sites are useless unless they play at playable settings.
- frgmstr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Here is a good article to read if you are looking for a powerful card with a good price that is way below the 2900 XT.
http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTM1MSwsLGhlbnRodXNpYXN0
"See how the 320 MB version of the GeForce 8800 GTS compares in games against the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT. If video card value is what you seek, you will want to read this. We have also included some Lost Planet demo DX9 testing with interesting results." - dafragsta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I need to bite the bullet and buy a 640MB GTX or GTS card while my two 7800GTXs can still pick up a buck or two on Craig's List or ebay. Looks like they've held up well for being on the market for almost a year now.
- elrechazao, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yes, but the 2900 crossfire setup (800 bucks) was beat by a SINGLE 8800 gts...not gtx, not ultra. that's 350 bucks beating 800.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9ATI = Crap Linux support. It doesn't matter how good their cards are, they will work like sludge on Linux.
- frgmstr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2We used an OCed NVIDIA card because they are overclocked out of the box and readily available in North America and matched closer in price to the 2900, yet the NV card is still cheaper.
As for OCing, we covered it in our evaluation, http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTM1OSw4LCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== - Kwipper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I am trying my hardest to remain unbiased between ATi and Nvidia cards, but the more and more harsh reviews I hear coming from ATI's 2900 XT cards, the more I think I just might waver towards Nvidia. Come on ATi! Pick up the slack, you're getting creamed out there! I like to see good competition between two compnaies, because it means lower prices for the end user.
I also think that morale in ATi might be down as well, since they are pretty much going to bow-out of the high-end video card market. I am unsure who's to blame for this. ATi, AMD or both companies. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2okay
- Artifez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Good article, I'm in the market for a new rig so this is very useful info.
- captcanuk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How come they reviewed a generic 2900XT versus and Overclocked 8800 GTS OC2 ($50 more)? When you pump the clocks on cards, there really is no comparison when the numbers are already close when its not clocked up. The funny thing is, they sorta mention overclocking but never share any details on how the 2900XT does overclocked.
I used to heavily respect [H] for their hardware reviews but now I'm second guessing what their methodology is - it just seems a bit odd. - threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I agree.. I was hoping once they got together they'd get some nice hardware rolling out PLUS finally get some good drivers...
- ivybat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1All PCI-ex cards currently only use x8 anyway. You don't need the full x16 yet
- pmuse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was thinking it was named after a CNN show.
- xaxxon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The 8800 ultra isn't supposed to be a particularly high bang-for-the-buck card. Comparing it against a crossfire setup is dumb. The only comparison that the ultra should be involved in is a "money doesn't matter, how fast can you get" comparison.
Compare a crossfire setup to an SLI setup and let me know what you find out. Oh.. wait. I already know. - PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1who dugg gamer's link down? he posted a non-biased link contradicting the gist of the posted story. This article says that the 2900xt is a total waste of money, but yet in the article gamer posted, two 2900's beat out a single 8800 extreme at the same price.
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1These cards are DOA. Like Nvidia's 8600 series.
- chingy1788, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1$50 more? more like $350 less
as 2 2900XT in crossfire is about the equivalent of the overclocked 8800GTS - OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2A single 8800 or 2900 on a C2D PC will outperform a PS3.
- khlae, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Did anyone notice that the intel 975 chipset only supports two pcie x8 for crossfire , whereas the 680i supports two x16 slots for sli?
Maybe its just me. - TypeEE, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4No wonder Sony think PS3 can sell, they must have been reading the cost of crossfire/SLI setups, PS3 does sound like a bargain
- Dred210, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Honestly i found this review with a lot of bias towards Nvidia and not very real world. They only tested a select number of games particularly ones that only do well on Nvidia. I mean come on. Fear, Quake4, and Half-life2 should be standard. Not to mention quake4 wars and team fortress 2 use those graphic engines and they will be out in a 2 months or so. I have seen benchmarks from many other websites show ATI winning by a small margin. I am not trying to discredit [H] i am sure there benchmarks hold true to some degree. But to call the card worthless is a gross overstatement. Fact is the card gets the job done. sometimes ATI wins sometimes Nvidia wins. If they had benchmarked the other games i listed we might have seen ATI win a few.
One more thing i am not an ATI fanboy. I own and Nvidia graphics card mainly for the Linux support. I just wish articles were more fair and balanced not slanted like this article was. - gamer_013, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3The HD2900XT in crossfire does beat one 8800 Ultra - http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1131/1/page_1_introduction/index.html
As more driver updates come out the 2900 will perform better. But the 2900 is not a waste of money - quetivity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0nvidia has won the war, ati kiss gooooood bye, to this date I can say that I worked with about 4-5 ATI cards and a few older Diamond editions but nothing of their line compares to Nvidia. http://www.netfreez.com
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1and was a budget card to begin with. Eeu.
- an0nym0us, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2you do know that 2 x 2900xt is still waaay much cheaper than 2 x 8800GTS OC SLI?
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3I agree with ferrariman60
- baddog121390, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1They don't suck as much as HARDOCP would lead you to believe. Kyle is in bed with nVidia
- lament, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1well yeah.. your card is old as *****.
- chingy1788, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1DAAMIT needs to get their skates on
- frsrblch, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2That's weird... I was reading on the TH forums that two 2900 XTs in CF beat two 8800 GTXs.
