- Scruffydan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32I ain't an Intel guy either... but i ain't an AMD guy. I am a best CPU for my money kind of guy. why would u stick with AMD if they have slower chips for a given price? That being said I do hope that AMD does something to bring their chips up to speed, completion is a great thing
- ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25im not really an "intel guy", but its good to see intel make a strong comeback...good for them
- imjustabill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Headline: New Processors are faster than old ones!
- zone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24yeah, nice to see some competition wich, in the end, can only mean lower prices and better chips to come :)
- BitSlash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19as an AMD guy, I'm kind of disappointed, but competition does benefit not only the consumer, but the competing companies themselves- it prevents complacency.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+30Yes, laugh about Intel beating AMD... for the first time in years.
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@betterth
Then stop reading them. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -12/+24WE GET THE POINT.
It doesn't take 5 articles a day to prove the same point, we get it. - xero9, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20Okay AMD boy. If this was an AMD is kicking Intels ass, you'd be digging the ***** out of it
btw I'm on the fence on this one. I'm a PPC guy - McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Wait, what the hell are you talking about? The Core 2 Duo (like all the cores) are new chips coming out of Intel's Israeli R&D division. They're based on the Pentium M architecture, which was based on the Pentium III architecture. The Pentium 4 chips are based on the NetBurst architecture, which had problems with its long pipelines and what have you. The Core 2 Duos take all the lessons learned from Pentium III, NetBurst, M and the first generation Cores and apply it to a brand new chip, which unequivocally destroys everything in Intel and AMD's line-up before it.
As for testing, Intel has jack ***** to do with the setups. Look at EVERY review out there with a myriad of other Intel and AMD configurations. The Core 2 Duo smokes EVERYTHING else out there in just about every test. End of story. Don't trust the posted review? There are hundreds to choose from, all saying the same thing.
Idiot. - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6AMD's stock really took a hit these past few weeks. We went from low 40's to low 20's. The stock has lost practically 50% of its value. If anyone of you here hold stock in AMD.... I can hear you crying.
Intel should be able to hold the lead at least until the start of 2007. By then the eight-core "8X8" program will roll out so AMD will have a small opportunity to gain back their momentum.
Both AMD and Intel earnings are out next week. Keep your eyes open. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You realize that the reviewer is talking about PREVIOUS benchmarks performed, not his, right?
- lunarworks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Simple solution: don't buy the high-end chips.
If you want the top of the line, you're gonna pay big bucks. It works that way for EVERYTHING. - orlandogeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6For a fairly non-fanboy based review, look at HardOCP's benchmarks. They have focused on more real world rather than artifiical. When comparing real world performance in things that actually matter and things that are actually useful. Static benchmark programs are not a true test of performance. Come on people, we all know that. That being said, I agree with everyone here. The competition certainly cant hurt either side. If Intel can edge out AMD on this generation of processors for performance vs cost, I'll choose an Intel chip for my next upgrade. If they cant, then I'll stick with AMD. Fanboyism is dumb.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Remember when everyone was wondering why Apple went with Intel for their switch to x86 instead of AMD?
Apple definitely plans ahead, another good example, I needed to open an old Appleworks document so I used the Appleworks from my old System 8 CD. I was waiting for classic to open and it didn't, Appleworks just opened. That's right, The un-updated version of Appleworks that shipped with OS 8 was already compatible with OS 10, naively long before anyone outside the company even knew about thier radical switch to BSD. It was a little buggy, but it ran. - psylence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Amen, DUH.
It'd be news if they WEREN'T as fast. Like it was for the last year or so as Intel sat in suckville. Welcome back Intel. - FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yeah but Intel did make newer CPUs that were worse performers than their past CPUs. And now they stepped back to basically the core of the old Pentium III, slapped on all the new goodies (smaller die sizes, 64bit ops, dual core, larger L1 and L2 cache sizes, etc) and it's performing better than all of the P4 they had ever made in the past.
Hope this doesn't mean AMD will revert back to their old K6 cores, and upgrade them. Ew. - nickiank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Competition like this is *very* good for consumers. AMD hasn't had a good reason to push itself really hard for a while, and now they do, even if some reviews out there are partial and not making the best comparisons. The best counter to FUD or FUD-like tactics is not to call the other party out, but to beat them on features and/or performance hands down.
That said, cheers to Intel for turning out a truly great processor for the first time in years. More proof that threats to market share sometimes promote innovation. One of the few instances where the market really *does* manage to work. - oyourmom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah im a AMD guy big time but still i wanted to see Intel pull ahead. Now AMD is gonna have to make something new. Can you say price drop?
- Goldenatom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5FX-62 is dual core, if I'm not mistaken.
- cubeeggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the AMD fanboys are rabid, complaining that the comparison isn't fair because the FX-62 is half a month older than the Core 2 Duo.
- hcl40u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ Scruffydan
Just the type of guy we need more of. - ompa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does it really matter which company you support? If you think about it, if you go with Intel you're always going to be up for a while before AMD's new chips come out, and down right after AMD's new chips come out. If you go with AMD, it's going to be the exact same deal.
As has been said before, new processors are usually better than old ones. There's really no point to arguing over which is better, because each company is going to be better at some point in the future.
The exact same arguement is going to come out next year when AMD comes out with its new chip, and then the following time when Intel comes out with its new chip. To be honest, I'd be more excited about the:
-price drops for AMD in the coming month after an Intel release
-price drops for Intel in the coming month after an AMD release - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Im just glad to see it runs cooler , i think they did a good job on that this time around , amd will come back and kick their ass even more though, watch, either price drops, or new chip *guesses price drops*
- celebi23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can't wait for the Core 2 Duo Macbooks :D
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4k then, I am revoking my AMD fanboy license, my next CPU will be an intel.
- matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Correct, FX-62 is dual core.
- matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Well, lets see, the Core 2 Duo E6700 is $530 and the AMD FX-62 is around $1000 so yes.
Cheaper + faster.
The extreme core duo is around the same price and is much faster. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@FRAGaLOT:
That's the thing, Intel is looking to be the best bang for the buck this time around. Supposedly they're pricing the chips very competitively, whic means that, at least early on, they're positioning them to be comparably, if not more reasonably, priced than AMD's offerings. However, it still remains to be seen if things actually play out as such, or whether that was just marketing speak. - smarusich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3even teh 6700 was a little high
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In yet more news AMD's next line of processors (insert name here) 'kicks Intel's butt.'
Stupid fanboys. - imjustabill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps try going to the site, the prices are right there....
- wacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Whens the release date?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, I guess the old car analogy would work in this case if you mean Chevy severely beat Ford like a red-headed stepchild. Cause actually, I've never seen a bigger disparity between AMD and Intel. Those benchmarks are through the roof. No wonder people are excited.
- FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Exactly.. if this was true "competition" then you'd think their high end CPUs would be cheaper to undercut their competition. They (i.e. both companies) only do this for the rest of their chip line.
- McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Uh, it is. The $200 chip was the one that beat the FX-62, dingaling. This was news, like, three weeks ago.
- nkassi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yesterday. They will be available on the 22nd for sale I believe.
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'll take one affordable Core Duo Extreme. Wait a second. They're all extremely unaffordable! Not cool!
- FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yes we love competition.. I just wish BOTH companies high-end CPUs didn't frigging cost over $900.
- suldar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is nice. Unfortunately I wont be upgrading for a while yet. Just recently upgraded to an AMD64 3500. I'm always way behind anyway. I just wish more software would catch up with the hardware and actually utilize 64 bit and multiple processors etc.
- nTensify, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And you think an FX-62 is affordable at a price of.. oh wait, it's PRICED EXACTLY THE SAME.
Anywho, buy a E6600/E6700 for half the price and overclock past the EE's ability. Or if you're really cheap, buy the E6300 (~$200) and overclock, though you won't get nearly has high as the other two (the multipler isn't high enough). - combatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry, no. X2 chips are dual core chips. All of them. All of them use the same memory, with the exception of the AM2 chips, which use DDR2. Engage brain, then speak. Only in that order.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Two cores != 2X performance.
Fail. - dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can someone provide a price breakdown for the other "Core 2" chips. Right now all I've seen reported is:
$530 - Core 2 Duo E6700
$1000 - Core 2 Extreme X6800
Aren't there other models? What are thier prices?
thanks. - rexxars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another review of the new CPUs is available at http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2006/07/14/intel_core_2_duo_processors/1.html
I love the Conroe.. Better performance, less heat, and less power consumption - awesome! :D - rishimaharaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AMD doesn't have the excess fab capacity that Intel has. They literally have no place to make the chipsets.
- dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1imjustabill
I looked on the site but couldn't find them. Also, my Opera browser wouldn't open some of the flash-based links...
But could you be helpful and provide a link to the pricing since you seem to know where it is?
thanks - McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Amen. The absolute lack of reason and objective interest here is almost nauseating and definitely embarrassing. It's like these kids WANT to be the laughing stocks of the Internet.
- duzytata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And I just built a new gaming rig with a AMD Athlon 64 3700! This will be great for consumers with the price wars about to go down. Just too bad I didn't wait a few more months.
- Sidask8r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@FRAGaLOT
That's cause your a ***** ***** posting either things that are very wrong/very obivous.
