- EviLiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate that games use WASD now. ESDF is so much better. For one, that's where your hand is supposed to be on the keyboard. Secondly, it gives more utility keys around your fingers.
- EviLiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"the reason why no mainstream game will ever ship ESDF is that the pinky finger has trouble reaching CTRL from a ESDF position where as in a WASD config the pinky lays naturally on this key. In ESDF the pinky lays naturally on the windows key, which is not good."
With ESDF, the pinky lands naturally on A, which is they way your pinky should ALWAYS be, unless you type with two fingers or have Shaq sized hands.
Keys very close to your fingers when using WASD = tab q e r f c x z shift
Keys very close to your fingers when using ESDF = q w r t g v c x z shift caps
2 more keys available for whatever, and that's only counting keys very close. If you count keys that take a little stretching, the difference is greater as there is nothing to the left of caps.
What if I told you to rotate your keyboard 90 degrees so the numpad is close to you and caps is further away, and I said "You should type like this!" That would be really weird and not make much sense, as the keyboard was designed for your fingers to be on ASDF JKL: not CAPS ASD HJKL or anything else funky.
I was playing Battlefield 2 on a friend's PC in the dark, and he uses WASD. He peck types with two fingers, and I can do 90wpm, and we tease eachother about our typing. So I was living with his config, got used to wasd for the time being, and I needed to type something, but I couldn't. He didn't understand why - I'm Mr. faster typer aren't I? Well yeah... when my hands are on the right keys. I had gotten used to not having my hands on the home row, and it was dark. So I had to get my eyes reeaally close to the keyboard to get going normally again, and he made fun of me, since he didn't really comprehend the idea of proper typing.
Hopefully I have explained my point. This is entirely too much effort for such a silly topic. :P - gkniffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using ESDF since DOOM - the original, and I must agree with Eviliu, it is much better as there are more bindable keys, it's easier to type, it's natural, and the Ctrl key is not too far.
But it is too late because the gaming community is set on WASD - just like the computer user community is stuck on QWERTY when something like the Dvorak is much more comfortable and requires less reaching. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Knowing Logitech's drivers, the G15 keyboard will slow down your computer. Plus, it's main function are the macro keys which don't really help you in FPS's. It's main advantage would be RPG's and the like. It doesn't seem like it's worth $80 to me, but maybe if I was addicted to Evercrack...
- molochi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a lefty so I do jkl,
Lets my index finger find the "bump" on the j w/o looking, leaves the top row of letters free for other binds, and lets the pinky handle lots of less important binds while I move.
G15 Keyboard looks nice for a righty, but I'm good with my old one. I do want a non-right-handed "lasermouse" tho'. Logitech's g5 is shaped for righties. MS' 6000 model is ambishaped AND has a lefty button. Razer's diamondback is ambi-shaped as well. - dcarpenter85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the reason why no mainstream game will ever ship ESDF is that the pinky finger has trouble reaching CTRL from a ESDF position where as in a WASD config the pinky lays naturally on this key. - theantidote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never tried ESDF, but maybe I will. It sounds like a good idea.
Oh yeah and also this keyboard kicks ass. Seriously my heart stopped for a second when I saw it. - xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So then why dont you just rebind the keys to ESDF?
- BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As awesome as this keyboard is, it still doesn't hold a candle to the Optimus.
- sn0wfr0g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I own one of these and love it. ++
There are 2 levels of intensity for the backlit keys plus off. The LCD is awesome in WoW and while playing media files, a wireless version would be an awesome addition to a media center... The USB ports on the top back of the keyboard are great for things like key FOBs or wireless mice. - Scott802, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not that anyone cares but I've always use AF for left right and ED for forward backward. WASD was never comfortable for me. Maybe because I broke my ring finger when I was a kid.
I like the LCD on the keyboard but since I don't look at the keyboard most times I would rather have it somewhere near my monitor. - Stentorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still think the Zboard is the best gaming keyboard.
- EviLiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do. But then E and F then usually default to something else. So then I'm forced to redo the entire config. Which isn't a big problem except for a game like Battlefield 2, where no one within 100 feet of the development house has ever attempted to use the UI before. Ugh, what nighmares.
- igibson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0definately going to save my money for the optimus....
- Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it. The back-lit keys will be nice in the dark. There big gripe about the LCD not having a bunch of apps is fine but it is huge that they release the SDK standard. I have lots of ideas for how I can program this thing.
As an aside...
I use the right mouse button for forward so I can maneuver around corners with one hand while hitting other keys with the other. W is my jump. - sam54m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0where are the freakin aps for it?
- GNUGNOME, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@BBX25 i dont think anyone can disagree with you, except for the fact that you can actually buy this one.
- Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice, but I still love the Saitek RED Eclipse Keyboard. Very nice feel and the red shows through the keys MUCH better than blue.
- k3n85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can't say i've ever heard of "ESDF" in the 20 years of my life, maybe I play the wrong games? All I've worked with.
But holy compared to my $9 keyboards, this looks a few steps up :D
Again i like my really simple keyboards though - Billahoody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dude i saw that at bestbuy the other day i liked it but didnt have any money
- Riffz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hella saving my money for that kickass programmable LED keyboard.
- Neptuned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WACK!
- Novak76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not impressed. I'll stick with my Zboard
- 7477696700, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate flipping through pages. Here's a better review IMO. http://www.everythingusb.com/logitech_g15_gaming_keyboard.html
- thegreenarrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whatever rocks your socks off. I own people just fine with my weak-ass keygboard. Well, that and hacks.
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the macro keys, but being left handed, I don't like their positioning. I also don't like the huge footprint of the thing. Seems like there's quite a bit of wasted space there. I play RPGs as well as FPS, so those macro keys would be very useful, but with the desk I have at the moment, it's just too big, and I'm not sure it's worth $80.
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0where's my ergononomic version :)
- carlosfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man i digg this keyboard to the Logitech website and no one diggs it. That stinks. Owell
- Twenty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Meh, that Wolf Claw looks really neat though.
- Zeush8su, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SWEET
- Falcon4093, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another better review at GamingNexus- http://www.gamingnexus.com/Default.aspx?Section=Article&I=901
Few shots of the LCD actually interacting with the game as well.
The fact that there's an SDK for the keyboard is pretty sweet, lots of cool things that you could do with it. - gridpoet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no one ever gives any love to the Nostromo N52, talk about a good piece of gear. I had the N50 and then bought the 52 when they released it and havnt yet seen a bigger increase in my game.
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=2071&pcount=&Product_Id=157024 - bull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Strange as it may sound, I use JKL and the right mouse key to move forward.
As for the new Logitech keyboard - it looks cool, has a lot of functionality - but, like others have said, I own just fine with a cheap/simple one. Keyboards like this are just for those who think they need it to play better. - theantidote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You could prolly use LCDC on that little LCD in the middle instead of Logi's program anyways.
- defylogik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im a nm,. kinda guy myself, with the right mouse button used to move forward. unconventional i know but thats how i have always gamed since duke nuke and rise of the triad. anyways, i am still waiting for the keyboard that the individual keys light up with mini LCDs. id pay 200 for that thing! for now ill stick with my apple pro and mighty mouse.
- WOP1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i still think that the eluminx is the best gaming keyboard out there.
- Bitgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good call 7477696700, that other review WAS much better. Also learned new stuff, like how big the kb is, which makes me worried now. *sigh* The LCD looks like it might be neat, and I want the lit keys because I'm usually typing with the room light off at night. At the moment I'm using a USB power light on the kb, but lit keys would be better.
- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$80...screw that I'll stick to my wireless Logitech DUO that I paid $38 for.
- HighTechGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but does it support full n key rollover without the irritating phantom key suppression or lock-out? TEST: open notepad. hold down the A key. don't let go. Now hold down S. Keep holding. Now hold down Z... if the Z doesn't type, you've got "phantom key suppression" - a "feature" that many manufacturers advertise as a "good" thing... yeah, right.
- rimco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh god, just the picture alone makes my head hurt... you PC gamers and your complicated games! :-P Guess I'll be alone playing Revolution... all by myself... *pouts*
- freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0just give me a keyboard w/ acutal physical buttons, like the old IBM keyboards
- SuidAfrikaner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0WASD? They must mean WADS. W, A, D, and S are the most important keys on ANY keyboard. And olso, Ownage can be accomplished just as effectively on a cheapo depot keyboard.
- ChaosElement, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My current keyboard works just fine, thank you very much.
- joseph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0extremely ugly and clunky.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0although I did by the mx1000 laser mouse, money well spent fo shizzle
- weebs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0too bad logitech keyboards SUCK
- thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0If it doesn't have programable OLEDs in the keys, then its not worth mentioning...
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0people pay money for keyboards? i dont see why a keyboard needs a screen. when was the last time you saw a keyboard screen option in any software ever? i'll stick with my basic cheap ass keyboard. i didnt see a price on the site, but im guessing that this thing probably costs more than some entire computers. oh well, i guess there will always be some socially inept nerd who will throw their computer programming money away on something like this. probably order it online too so they dont have to interact wiht an actual person.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0better off saving the money and buying a reliable keyboard and the money you say put to increasing your computers gaming power, sound card, etc etc etc. :P
- wired4u, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0DAMM IT beat me I always get beaten to digs
