- jfox00, on 10/12/2007, -4/+247What about a digg "auto-mirror" feature? Once the digg acceleration for a particular link starts increasing (or when a site is pushed to the front page), digg.com would, behind-the-scenes, generate a mirror of the site.
- flipzmode, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29I saw an interview once with Kevin and they asked him that exact question, and why digg doesn't auto-mirror websites. His reasoning was because he doesn't want digg to take away from any advertising revenue the site that got dugg might generate. I know not having mirrors (automatically) sucks, but I really think he's right!

- Greg-J, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29I wish people would take it upon themselves to mirror this kind of thing before digging it. It's so damn frustrating.
- BrainRecall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Looks very interesting, but it reminds me of plotters, large blue-print printers that use pens to lay down the marks. It moves in a very similar fassion, with large sweeping movements and only having the pen hit the paper at the right times (or in this case, pushing down the nozzel of the can). The movement system is two servo motors, string, and an acuator for the nozzel. I wouldn't be too suprised if they in fact pulled some of the same parts from a plotter. (Plotters actually roll the paper back and forth, with the pen above the rollers that moves side to side, and then the pen itself moves up and down to make contact with the paper. Transfer one motor that rolls the paper to one string, transfer the other motor that moves the pen to another string, and cut some wires for the nozzel. Hmm, makes me want to tear apart my friends plotter...)
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12This could make a good business for some people, murals are expensive.
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10And you failed to read the description
- z0l0pht, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Thats not clipping, most of the video is time lapsed.
- hordak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@TwinklyJesus, this means that street graffiti artists can go high-tech now!!! :(
- johnhamm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What I like about it, and what I thought was ingenius, was the way they use two motors and gravity to get four directions vertically over such a large space. They use the weight ratio of the spray paint can to move in any direction using two stepper motors and string. That is cool AND original.

Adds mirrors next to all the story links. Helpful. - twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh, I see...it's tagging for the artistically impaired... ;-)
- Pictographer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Good point about the ad revenue, but maybe there's still a way to mirror automatically when it would be welcomed. Digg could apply some heuristics to the page to see if there's any advertising already and check the copyright notice. Also, if there isn't already a meta tag to say whether or not mirroring is permitted, we should invent one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5actually i found the pdf file that details the whole project, from concept to construction to testing more interesting:
http://www.hektor.ch/About+Hektor/Hektor.pdf - assassinave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is quite old. This isn't a technology thing so much as an art thing. The two of them have built all kinds of engineering/programming/art programs and websites. They actually used the machine to create the cover for an issue of I.D. magazine. I guess there are no designers on here.
Look at these sites to get an idea of what Jurg Lehni and or his partner do
www.vectorama.org
www.lineto.com - typefaces where usage is displayed by sourcing headlines from today's news. (well they use to) - diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12google video is just extremely low res. probably the worst video streaming service out there for the sake that they take this super low res video and then stretch it out to give a blocky result with sub-par audio.
google fanatics, please mod this down now. ;P - jnw05, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8732647816928234777
use that link..... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, that google video one looks a bit cooler than the demo I saw a year ago or so. However, it's still not that spectacular. It's just a plotter. You've been able to *buy* plotters that will print enormously large sites (not the same as a regular printer) for years and years and years.
This is cool on the "homemade front" but it's still just a cheap plotter. Cheap meaning that a real plotter starts out at around $4,000 and can easily run up to $80,000 or more. - Jams, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@jfox00
Thas a really good idea, im suprised noone else has dugg your comment. Maybe you should suggest this. - psylence, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Because you would do that to your house, its better for society to keep this off the market.
- jeremy66158, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7How did they build this?
- toyotaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3definitely saw this before.. maybe not on digg. I think it's sorta cool, but if you look at it close-up, there's some definite splattering from the imperfect spray can. I think that if they took it one step further and used an airbrush for a nice smooth (and even adjustable pen width), they would absolutely have a sell-able product. Imagine walking into home depot, screw a couple of pulleys at the top of the wall, and print out a nearly perfect mural. Filling in with color will come with time.
- shaun3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5At least it works and doesn't get bogged down all the time like You Tube. I'd rather have a low-rez version than nothing at all. Agreed, though, that they blow it up too much and make pixelated.
- thespacepope, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Check out the "about" page:
http://www.hektor.ch/About+Hektor/
And the main page for good measure (since the post only links to the videos section):
http://www.hektor.ch/ - Leonaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now it's easier than ever to spray graffiti under that bridge or on that highway in the 21st century, and all the police will find is a spray can, some string, and a USB cord that was hooked into your laptop! Jet Set Radio!!
- MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5There is the "Original Size" option.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the technology to do this has been around for decades. as mentioned before this is basically a plotter. though an extremely cool use of the technology.
- appidydafoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Misleading title... first off, it's implied that anyone can do this the way it's phrased. This is not a commercial product, so no, "you" cannot "print from your laptop to your wall". Second, it's only a single can that's indexed by the mechanics and they are repeating a tiling segment of vegetative line-art - incredibly slowly. Third - can you imagine how many times they had to adjust the timing to get an accurate shot? Every time the can is moved you can see the kinetic energy swinging the bottom of the can. It chills for a minute and then fires off a burst and moves again... so this doesn't seem like it would scale very well or have practical functional applications. I think it's very interesting, but honestly... every ones desktop printer is about a thousand times more advanced. Bonus points for all the artsy mooks smoking cigarettes, drinking and sitting down to watch this thing do it's magic to a set of jazz fusion. Artschool FTW.
- Gnascher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Time-lapse ... not clippy.
As for the quality issue ... google stretches the video to use the available space. If it looks blocky, reduce your window size.
Google really should start with 'optimal size for the video stream' and allow you to resize if you want. - Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually an old, circa 1975 X,Y plotter, is more like this.
- briangig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not sure how this is in the robots category...
would be funny to see a bunch of thugs in the city setting one of these up, plugging in their powerbooks and e-tagging some random wall. - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This makes me want to rig one up.
- crythias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why, when I read this, did I expect to see printing with a can of Silly String? http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?s=silly+string&gwp=13
- BinaryCortex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-283528724322180681&pl=true
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, this guy's crazy. Great way to do grafitti while killing the ozone layer :)
- crashingechelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didnt know what the description meant at first, but man that crap is hypnotic! I want to be able to do that!
- Makoiyi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1New generation of Graffiti much??? Comp gens and what not lol, I mean seriously, graffiting walls using a laptop INGENIOUS!!!
- panic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Wow if someone could build something like this and put it on shelves I would be the first to buy it! My entire house would have tags up on every wall (inside and out). Seriously, someone needs to build a somewhat easy-to-use version of this.. they will be rich. If the software could be controlled through a print driver that would be really cool. Setting up the motors and strings would be the only difficult part.. but well worth it for a quality tag (I can make cool designs.. just suck at spray painting)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"It's hypnotic to watch!"
...and, thanks to the wonderous "Digg Effect", you won't be! - ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've noticed a funny thing about DIGG.
Since it's still kinda new, a lot of old news shows up here as new.
Don't get me wrong, I love DIGG to death but I think this has to be the fourth post this week I had already seen on other news sites six months or more ago. - apache2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1meh would be a lot cooler if it did it faster
- abbtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice find. It is very well documented. Seems like the system can do raster images very well!

http://hackedgadgets.com - iMactel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We should be able to make a bluetooth version and have no contact other than installation.
- johnhamm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Here's a mirror on Coral cache incase the site succumbs to the Digg effect:
http://www.hektor.ch.nyud.net:8080/Videos/ - Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unbelievable! I gotta get me one of these!
- dreadlock7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's pretty kool. It's the geek way to do graffiti. So there are other computer graf-heads out there too!
The AMOK tag turned out pretty sweet. Sure takes a long time to paint it though.
So is it still vandalism if a computer does it?
Dugg - gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1saw this a few years ago. THey have updated their website and added a few videos since then. STill cool though, digg++
- Daem0nX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3That is really neat, great concept and deployment.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That must have taken a hella long while to calibrate. Awesome stuff, though.
