- Topher06, on 05/01/2008, -8/+62Actually, you will find out how little energy your actually using, and then can stop feeling bad when every treehugger jumps down your throat for leaving your TV in stand-by mode.
Honestly, my entire home theater system (receiver, TV, PVR, PS3 and Wii), in standby mode, consumes 18 watts of power, and when on consumes around 350 watts (without the PS3 or Wii on). I put a energy meter on all my wireless router, DSL box, voip box and wireless phone system and it only used 25 watts of power. When I turn on my terabyte NAS connected to the same power strip the whole mess consumes around 45 watts.
I have an electric oil filled radiator heater for my bedroom and despite being a 1500 watt appliance, in a month in only cost around $5.00 (at $0.05 per kilowatt hour) to operate during the coldest months of winter.
People are way overhyping the need to conserve energy. The biggest wastes of power in the home is running the A/C at too low a temperature, heating your home at too high a temp, your fridge, washer and dryer and stove and if you still use 100 watt lightbulbs and keep them on unecessarily. Most other consumer electronics and appliances are relatively easy on power consumption and not the reason for the destruction of our planet. - inactive, on 05/01/2008, -5/+42ignorance is bliss...besides, i would need around 25 of those things...
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+32great for roommates who argue over who uses more electricity
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -1/+32If we use all the solar energy for powering our computers, then the third world countries won't have any sunlight left for their agriculture, you insensitive clod.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+24make me feel bad? no way, I'd be overclocking my power strip
- RedHerringHack, on 05/01/2008, -1/+17Nuclear Power, and Weed. I'm set.
- masterm1nd, on 05/01/2008, -1/+15Protip: it also protects you from the brain reading aliens. Plus it looks nice and chicks love it.
- BadseedJR, on 05/01/2008, -4/+17Am I the only one that would try to get that number as high as possible... like some sort of contest?
- breadfred, on 05/01/2008, -0/+12That is great, but some devices just seem to use incredible amounts of juice. My NTL cable box uses 30 watts on standby. It is hot to the touch even when not in use. I did of course mention this to my cable provider, but this seems to be 'normal'. Needless to say I turn the bloody thing off at source now when not in use.
- masterm1nd, on 05/01/2008, -1/+13"Why do they always explode on me"
- discochew, on 05/01/2008, -3/+15Why does going green almost always invariably involve costing you most of yours?
- RedHerringHack, on 05/01/2008, -1/+12Haha, that's pathetic.
- PwnisherX, on 05/01/2008, -3/+13Actually, it would make me feel awesome seeing the extreme amount I use.
- killbert24, on 05/01/2008, -5/+15Just convert your home so that it uses solar energy and you'll be fine.
- kamisamaji, on 05/01/2008, -0/+10Ehm, voltages would be in parallel, so they'd all have 120 Volts. Current would split up though, and you can only draw a certain maximum current from your regular wall outlets - I think it's around 10 amps.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -12/+21The more energy I use, the better I feel. Energy kicks ass, you hippies turn everything good into a bad thing... except weed.
- h4k0r, on 05/01/2008, -1/+10Not if you live with ***** room mates in CA. I had a room mate run a windows AC unit in his room all summer, and the bill skyrocketed. extra 100-200 dollars a month. When it would kick on all the lights would dim in the house. Needless to say I wasn't paying for that *****, so I canceled the PG&E and had him open it in his name that way I wasn't stuck with high bill due to his shenanigans
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -1/+10I agree, I'd hate to see my daily power consumption glowing on my monitor. Thank god it's buried behind the desk on a powerstrip.
- ncc74656m, on 05/01/2008, -0/+8Good advice/knowledge/research.
I disagree that the need to conserve energy is overhyped, however. Power is one of the few commodities that is actively monitored by the utility providing it, and adjusted up or down depending upon need. Therefore, any measurable direct reduction on your part results in a reduction on their part.
I, too, leave my standby electronics on without issue all day, and just shut down everything else that I can. I have switched out every bulb I own to a CCFL, and will plan to use LED bulbs when they become reasonably priced (currently $10/unit). - funkytaco, on 05/01/2008, -1/+9I am equally offended!
- serpentor, on 05/01/2008, -0/+8$100?! No way that costs more than $20 to mass produce in China, probably less. Profit margin on that thing must be insane...
It's a great idea and I'd actually buy one if it was reasonably priced, say $35. - SteveMax, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7That's not how parallel connection works...
- digidelia, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7that was the best comment i've ever read
- weister42, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7$99? You can buy a Kill A Watt AC monitor that does the same thing for about $30 shipped on eBay, granted it's not fancy looking and it isn't built into a powerstrip but people usually have powerstrips all over their house. Plug this before a powerstrip and it's the same thing.
- masterm1nd, on 05/01/2008, -7/+13So they want to steal my money and make me feel bad? Al Gore would be proud.
- h4k0r, on 05/01/2008, -1/+7Why are you being dugg down???
- DrDash, on 05/01/2008, -0/+6CCFL's are great savers, especially with kids leaving lights on no matter how often you tell them. I live in a new development and all the "coach" lights are on a sensor that comes on at dusk. 60 watts per house in 112 home development. if everyone used CCFLs that alone would cut quite a bit.
- WriterSD, on 05/01/2008, -1/+7This is hilarious! I wonder how many other inventions can make me feel bad too? Maybe someone can invent a display to put on my refrigerator that will show a sad face when I remove too much food.
- junkstore, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6Dugg for "clod".
- masterm1nd, on 05/01/2008, -1/+7Honestly, theres no reason it should cost more than 10 dollars.
- thecompkid, on 05/01/2008, -0/+6A $100 power strip that needs batteries...no, I'm serious this time, NOW I've seen everything.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -2/+7Yeah speak for yourself, I certainly wouldn't feel bad about it
- PhoneJack, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5If you don't want to spend $100, you could always plug a power strip into a kill-a-watt, only $25.
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/travelpower/7657 - jimfeet, on 05/01/2008, -0/+518 watts draw translates to 13 kilowatt hours per month. And that's if you don't turn it on. You would need to run a 750 watt microwave for more than 17 hours to consume the same power.
- pingveno, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5The problems with drawing 18 watts is that you're drawing it 24/7/365. When everyone is doing that it really adds up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standby_power - MellerTime, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5$100? I'd rather get a $20 Kill-a-Watt (or similar) and just plug the huge chain of powerstrips I already have into it...
- logandurand, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4Especially considering that a considerable portion of Digg users could build a similar device themselves for far less.
- blean1, on 05/01/2008, -1/+5Another joke. 'Pay us 100 bucks....' Bite me. It's a stupid circle. Let's take a look at this....hmmm....polycarbonate housing, circuitry to tell you how much power you're using. Copper wires....All that stuff is mined. How much energy do you think went into the contruction of these things? We can't get away from the fact that we consume. All animals do. Go live in a cave, and do the world a favor.
- RedHerringHack, on 05/01/2008, -1/+5I will sue them for making me depressed. But seriously, I can see my local nuke plant right out the window. My power comes from the ATOM, and there are plenty of those lying around.
- neutrascrub, on 05/01/2008, -3/+6Until the FAA comes knocking at your door after a plane crach
- wettestwillie, on 05/01/2008, -8/+11120 volts / 64 plugs is 1.9 volts for each device. Are you running 64 nightlights?
- jamesov89, on 05/01/2008, -4/+7I turn mine off when I go to work/school/bed.
- bincoder, on 05/01/2008, -2/+5cover a section of 10 feet by 10 feet on the roof of your house with aluminum foil. 10 feet by 10 feet = 100 sq feet. That blocks somewhere around nearly 10kW of sunlight from being absorbed into the house, so the AC has that much less to deal with.
- ParanoydAndroid, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3Excuse me, I know we've never met, but it appears you may have a rod stuck up your ass, you may want to get that checked out. It can becomes a serious complication if left alone too long without treatment. I recommend trying to loosen up, possibly aided by alcohol of some sort.
- zephyr42, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3RAmen.
- Tenoq, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3The latter is the problem. No-one can dispose of it properly. If NASA had a better track record, we could shoot the spent fuel rods at the sun. :p
- h4k0r, on 05/01/2008, -1/+4masterm1ind? You have done your name a grave injustice.
- cr3ative, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3Said the man posting useless comments on Digg from a computer that could be otherwise turned off.
- evilbob333, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3My power company keeps track of that kind of thing for me.
- dacheetah, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2When it wants me to download a .exe "codec" file from "pornyoutube-18.com" I get a strange feeling it's some kind of malware.
