- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not a bad little tool, a little outdated. if you are really interested in what ur components' peak electric pull is, some devices have it labeled on there like hard drives and fans, etc. its also common on electric tools and tvs. its usually labeled what rails they pull from, like hard drives pull from the 12v and 5v rails, and then they give you an amperage value. so its like this voltage x amperage = wattage. as for the generic psus, its most important to look at amperage on the rails, and not the marketing mumbo jumbo of peak wattage.
- honus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am digging this one because it doesn't seem to overdo it. I've seen so many that pretty much throw a 400W minimum, and would force my PC to run a 520 watt minimum.
This one gives me 364 watt minimum, which is far more accurate.
I approve! Dugg! - TheGooseyOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btw, mine was 367W...but that doesn't factor in my OC'd CPU and video card...they need a place to input that (and also RPM speeds for your HDD, I'm sure my raptor 10k RPM takes up more wattage than my 7200RPM Maxtor)
- CPUKiller, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1I wish they would update this, it's hardware options are ancient.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The day after I order my PSU, thanks :(
- iMatt711, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its not bad its just outdated, but then again i guess if you're getting a 7800gtx, and a pentium d, you already know you need 600w minimum
- jagnum1fan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very spiffy
- Thundercat71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0calculated I need a 396 watt PSU, and I currently own a 400W supply. looks like I'm maxed out!
- noghead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All you people saying "oh I have seen this" or "oh this is old."
SO WHAT!! Looks to me right now that 525 people found this use full. You think because you already herd this it makes you better? Just move on to another digg if you don't like this one. - KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah I was scared that I would overload my 450W power supply, but when I put in my specs it said 265 minimum; now im gonna buy some more drives!
- fluffyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ugh I hate double posting (wish there was a edit button).
I forgot to say that digg is not a website to bring you and others up to date with the rest of us. If you want to read old news then I suggest going to some yard sales and purchasing old readers digest and national geographic subscriptions. Or since you are the leet computer user digg through online news archives. - TheGooseyOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome little script for people new to building computers...maybe it will slow some of the "how big of a PSU should I get" threads in computer forums everywhere
- EnzanBlues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great resource to use if you need to know what size power supply to get.
dugg - tdaddy11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just bought a new ps yesterday (500w), cause my pc started shutting down after getting a 20" monitor and running it at native res on my geforce 6800gt. The calc said I should be using a minimum 360w ps, my hp a350n uses a 250w ps. PPPPPPPPPAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- blkdiamond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One aspect that this calculator does not take into account is the quality of PSU, which is just as important as having enough power.
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0About time they made something like this!
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great for the average computer builder. Personally, I'm pretty well off generalizing my needs, and I don't go overboard with components either. I usually run mid-range hardware and a beefy (did I mention high-quality is important?) PSU (just purchased an OCZ Modstream 420W). +1 digg
- rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just more news from call for help, if you were able to watch call for help 3 or 4 months ago you would've already know about this already. I knew about this nefore I even watched the show but it was the first time I had heard anyone else talk about it.
- nicklinus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this was on CFH a while ago. Man you guys are going to know a lot when CFH comes to the USA
- fluffyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah and you are really leet for telling us off aren’t you.
The fact remains that Digg is about news and if it is old then it isn’t news. Some yahoo could post a link to a flash game of Britney Spears that was made 3 years ago and people would digg it. That doesn't make it worthy to be on digg, news is what digg is all about and if it isn't news then it isn’t worthy.
Learn how to find real news. If you find something cool but old then post it in the forums. Otherwise keep this crap off digg. - handeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good tool yes however it has this has been around ofr years
- paintball102089, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its good for wattage but not finding what rails you need and it doesnt have amd athlon 64 X2 as a choice and that is what i have
- OpticalLiam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty cool but I saw the same script on another website not long ago. Shame I can't remember where.
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great calculator! Extremely useful. My case came with a 450 watt PSU and apparently all I need is
- BloodShed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great find :)
looks like I need at least 400W on my next upgrade :p - ericesque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0concept is good. Execution is poor.
- shamam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My graphics card is PCI Express, which this doesn't seem to list. Or am I missing something?
- LoneSniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow memory lane, this site was one of the first stories I dugg on digg. Nice to see things coming back round again. I agree with 'fluffyturtle' digg should be CURRENT, NEW news otherwise it will loose it's edge. If users want to find 'old' information try www.google.com, I hear it is pretty good.
- cecil_t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is useless for servers. The options are totally geared toward desktops and specific hardware manufacturers - it should be more generic. 4 sticks memory maximum? The interface could be better as well. Not sure it's accurate for small form factor machines either.
- entropy357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've seen something like this before (but not this exact web site, and not on digg.com) It's very helpful.
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0260 watts (my last comment got off).
- jfritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This calculator is misleading. a 450W OCZ/PC Power&Cooling/Fortron PSU is MUCH better than a 450W cheapo generic PSU. There's more to computer power than wattage. Also, individual motherboards can be greedy on power, such as the ones from DFI.
- TenSecondEpic, on 08/15/2008, -0/+0I know this is a late response but do you by any chance of an estimate on how often eXtreme Power Supply Calculator is used by the public? Or how many hits pretty much?
- cecil_t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And they automatically include a floppy drive? Who builds computers with floppy drives now? Also people keep in mind that even if you oversize your power supply, the computer still only draws what it needs from it. So even if you get a 600 or 700 watt power supply and put it in a machine that only needs 250 watts, the power supply will only consume 250 watts worth of power.
- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TheGooseyOne -
Just buy an Antec case, they usually throw in at least 350W which costs almost the same as the PSU by itself. My Sonata II came with a 450W SmartPower. Although, I had already purchased a 550 True Power 2.0... - SilentBob417, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great idea but needs to be updated i have a AMD 64 3500+ it shows just up to 3400+ i have a Radeon X800XL video card the site doesn't have any x16 cards and i am not sure about what if u have a PCI controller card which u have running 6hard drives and 2 CD drives i could go into the server option but that doesn't support my CPU type. basically it needs some work but great idea if u have an older PC.
- TheGooseyOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Great calculator! Extremely useful. My case came with a 450 watt PSU and apparently all I need is"
no, PSU's in cases ALWAYS suck...go out and get yourself a good OCZ or Antec PSU - manvsmonster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.extreme.outervision.com/index.jsp
Here's another. - blacktoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It was nice to check on my PS decision I made on my new box. Great if your looking for a ballpark figure.
- tdaddy11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Oh ya, not everybody sees EVERY episode of CFH, so lets not be such PC snobs and berate those who post dated stuff. Unless it was previously posted on digg, then commence with the berating.
- fluffyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There is news and then there are interesting articles. It is not news if it is old; it becomes just another interesting link on the vast web.
Nothing new to see here, move along.
We really need a “old news but cool/useful category where stuff can be taken from the front page and put there.
Otherwise we just get stupid stuff like “Check out this awesome flash game from 2000!111! that the vast majority of the web browsers have seen. It might be cool to some but news it is not. - jn1167, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not a bad little tool and more accurate than some people are giving it credit for. I cant believe that I need an 800Watt PSU for my rig. LOL
- hiredgun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0how about u quit whining
- bunnyman, on 11/03/2007, -1/+0This is good. I also own a watt measuring device known as a "Watts Up?". For my fairly middle range HTPC, two hard drives, AMD 64 3000+, 6600GT video, 1GB Ram, some PCI cards, I rarely max out more than 200W and mine is only a 300W power supply.
- hiredgun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This calcualtor blows. It doesn't tell you how many volts per rail you should have in your power supply. Knowing that is more important than the total watts.
- mnemonik23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0http://www.extreme.outervision.com eXtreme Power Supply Calculator is always up-to-date.
- disord3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Makes my wonder what kind of PSU I've got.
I've added a couple sticks of ram, a MUCH tastier video card, a new HDD, and a second optical drive. Any one of two of those things probably wouldn't have taken it to the breaking point, but it reports now that I should have a 330W supply. I think I'm covered... - hagingtree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1look at me I am super elite digg *****!
Everything is old news, OLD NEWS OLD NEWS DUPE DUPE DUPE DUPE DUPE
I heard of this before NO ONE ELSE SHOULD BE EXPOSED TO IT!
I AM ELITE IF I DONT KNOW ABOUT IT THEN ITS NOT NEWS!
if I have heard someone mention it once while I was giving handjobs for beer money then it is old news! OLD NEWS OLD NEWS OLD NEWS!
doesnt matter than 600 people ahve found it useful IT SUCKS BECAUSE I ALREADY HEARD OF IT!
OMG JOO ALL SUXXOR, I AM DIGG ELITE!
OLD NEWS! DUPE! OMFG YOU SUCK! - oceansong, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0This is ridiculous. I cant believe 200 people have already dugg this.
- thatedeguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Pretty cool calculator. Works pretty well and would make a good resource.
