- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22If it's for Windows Based Laptops only, why do they show a Macbook Pro/Powerbook G4?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I think the Elgato eyeTV Hybrid does over the air HD on Macs. No cable HD though.
- aceman118, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@keyboardduder
A core 2 duo will outperform a pentium 4 @ 3.0Ghz. There have been dual core laptops for a while now and most of them will be able to handle this just fine. The graphics, yeah, will be a problem for some laptops, though.
I think this is a brilliant idea. - tomhutchinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Boo software-based receivers. They take way too much processing power. Hardware-based is the way to go for TV tuners.
Still, for laptops, it's a decent option. - ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Intel Macs can run Windows, therefore this device runs on Intel Macs
- Storberry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wait.. how big is the antenna?
- etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ok. Done. I used the Staples "That was EASY button".
- notfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, and Hauppage sells the same hardware with windows software - and has for a while. This is advertizing spam.
The Elgato/Hauppage one will tune digital or analog, by the way. - lpmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, a p4 3.0 would rate under a duo core centrino in terms of overall performance, so funny thing is, I dunno why people seem to think a p4 3.0 is all that scary a requirement.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@Phantastica
Actually you don't. I have the Antec T14 and the antenna it comes with is very compact, 8"x5" cardboard. That's it. I watched the Superbowl 2007 in 1080i HD on my laptop using it and it was perfect. No issues whatsoever. Only concern is the processor requirement, which is HUGE. My Pentium M 1.6GHz was just enough. Tried it in slower processors and it didn't work. - nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The over the air DTV/HDTV is transmitted as MPEG2...so you don't really need an encoder, you just save the MPEG stream as its received off the air.
- ChiSoxFan77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why would I care about CPU overhead if I'm watching and/or recording a show on my laptop. It's not like I care about the cpu overhead on my Comcast recorder. It records and changes channels and works. Period. It would be nice to be able to do the same on my laptop.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4@ChiSoxFan77
"Why would I care about CPU overhead if I'm watching and/or recording a show"
Watching wouldn't matter, but I would think recording would certainly be a concern. If I'm not watching TV, there's a much greater possibility that I'm using my computer. - lion1750, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have a pinnacle hd tv tuner for my laptop, its a tuner that just plugs into a usb port. http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/PCTV+Tuners/PCTV+Analog_Digital+PVR/PCTV+HD+Pro+Stick.htm
This Plextor tuner isn't impressive or innovative, there have been usb hd tv tuner sticks out for a while now. I've had mine since Christmas. - Saabzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You are right on. a P4 3.0 is really not that scary of a requirement. There are so many dual cores on the market now and most can handle this with out a prob. I'm gonna get one for my HP laptop and finally take advantage of the HD monitor it has!
- moghua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wonder if this is supported under Linux/MythTV?
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This stuff has been available for a long time. I have an EyeTV hybrid dongle attached to my home G5. I'm 12 miles from Mt. Wilson, one of the biggest antenna farrms in the world, and a set of rabbit ears works fine. I did upgrade to a $40 powered Terk antenna and now I don't have to do the tweaking when I switch to less-powerful stations. The EyeTV software is very cool, and the software is key. You can schedule a recording, edit out the commercials, and burn it to DVD or move it to your iPod.
I turned off my cable. Now all my TV is Hi-Def and free. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is nothing new. It's been around for a while now. Check this out

I've owned the exact same one for about 6 months now. The antenna is pretty compact too (just a postcard sized piece of cardboard). It truly is made for laptops. I carry it around with me and it works great on my inspiron 8600 with Pentium M 1.6GHz with 2GB RAM. Although, as mentioned by other diggers earlier, it takes a lot of processing power. It was great fun to watch the superbowl in HD on my laptop. Highly recommended. - notfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These days you don't notice - and the USB ones are much more convenient, even for desktops.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+224, The Office, StarTrek, Numb3rs, Scrubs, etc..umm...go there abc.com, nbc.com, cbs.com, fox.com for more info on what HDTV you can get for free.
- WarPirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This looks identical to Artec's T14a usb HD receiver.
also Agreed on the antenna portion from above. HD antenna's are a scam Do not buy into it. - nukem996, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After all the news about HDTV and cable cards I'm still wondering why we haven't seen an HDTV card that will read a cable card. Currently its the main thing preventing me from buying one, of course when they do come out I would require Linux drivers.
- bocaJWho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because the consortium that controls access to the technology are about as big of control freaks as the MPAA and RIAA.
I spoke with one of the people in charge of encryption technology information (among many other things I'm sure) at my local cable company (Click!Network - a city owned cable provider in Tacoma, Washington). He said that they would not license the technology for an operating system except Vista. Don't hold your breath for those linux drivers :-/ - nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2950 is the EXACT same thing as this and the EyeTV Hybrid and work on MythTV.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Umm. Maybe you dont understand the AppleTV. It ALREADY works with the AppleTV. I have an EyeTV Hybrid (same thing) to receive HDTV programming over the air (24, Numb3rs, Star Trek, The Unit, The Office, etc) and it puts them right into my iTUNES, into whatever playlists I tell it too when they are recorded.
So, Viola` instant AppleTV DVR content.
The appleTV model is just like MythTV split front end - back end. You have a backend PC somewhere doing all the capturing, storing in a library etc, and the AppleTV is the front end device that connects to the TV and plays that content from the back end server. Its the exact same model as MythTV. - SCAdvanced, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure that I understand why this is such a big deal. Pinnacle has had a USB HD receiver for a while now. And it doesn't require as much CPU or Video capability as this one. And apparently Antec has one as well(as posted above).
And I also agree with the antenna comment. I have an $8 antenna from Walmart hooked to my TV in my bedroom and I get 15 HD channels. Don't waste your money on an HD antenna. - Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No Linux.... no interest.
- steveoa3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey whats the deal with http://www.dealextreme.com/ ? They have some great prices on the limited stuff they have. I bought a R4DS last week and the best price I found was still almost twice as much as this site !
Looks like they ship out of Hong Kong ? Trustworthy ? - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're terrible at spamming.. At least attempt to make the link look related
*Tuts at all the lazy spammers appearing lately* - jordan314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I have the pinnacle HD pro stick as well, I've had it since last november. Works great, though the media software is bad. On a mac EyeTV works great w/ it though. Comes with a remote. Why is lion being dugg down?
- bolero421, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just curious, but what sort of programs / channels can one receive over the air?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I tried to make the Antec T14 (very similar to this one, probably exact, just different label), but couldn't. Not many instructions out there on that topic. Can anyone point me to a resource? Thanks.
- Nohbudy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At first i was havening my doubts about the performance. But some quick research cleared the facts. USB 2.0 is rated at 480Mbps @ 200Mhz. HDTV 720p runs at around 37Mhz. The bitrates vary for HDTV, however they do not go much over 20Mbps. Averaging in around 14Mbps. (Source http://www.widemovies.com/dfwbitrate.html )
However, this video is heavily encoded. It will leave it up to your CPU to do the de-encoding. That is why you need a 3Ghz processor. - Night201, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is:
http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_hvr950.html - Night201, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This works well too:
http://store.snapstream.com/hvr-950.html - DanaG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've ordered some stuff from dealextreme. I assume it's a few guys running a webstore out of a small office in Hongkong.
You place your order, they ship-out what they have in stock in 2 or 3 days via Hongkong Post, in the US you receive you order in a couple weeks. If it's not in stock, they order it from their supplier and it may be a few days to a few weeks before they receive it and ship it out. They seem business-like enough, but Amazon they ain't.
Just for fun, I might order some 110V LED lightbulbs they've started carrying, http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.159
Don't order anything you need in a hurry. - Mordred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not a bad price, but I'll wait for some reviews before I think about buying it.
- Menoats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone get back to me when they make a USB device that lets you actually hook up HD equipment suchas my Xbox 360 to my laptop. Btw my Pinnacle PCTV USB stick does all this nothing innovative. However the channels skip interference sucks.
- CrAsHnBurN45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's only a matter of time before someone figures out how use it with an Apple TV.
- humperdeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, this is good stuff. And yes it needs a powerful CPU for HD, but unless you have a 20+ inch monitor, the std resolution will be quite fine. I think this should be snatched up before the media lawers pull it from market. And it will, just like TiVo III has all kinds of DRM in it to prevent copying shows to PC etc.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It'll work with any computer that is powerful enough and has a USB port - Including desktop computers, and.. erm.. rack-mounted servers? (Couldn't think of any other computer form-factor aside from laptops/desktops)
If you have a spare PCI slot and know how to put the cards in, your as well using a PCI-based HDTV Card (Since they'll have better performance), but the USB things should work fine and are a lot more convenient. - nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually NOT...because the over the air HDTV/DTV signals are ALREADY MPEG2 encoded....all your PC is doing is saving them to disk as they are received...no need for encoding or anything at all.
- ronix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Owner of an ARTEC T14A, which is this device. About the free antenna. See them here.

So I'm amazed by this antenna, tiny, flimsy, but I've split it 4 times, and it still can get better reception than any trek antennas i've paid for. So much so I bought another one from zipzoomfly. Now the sad part. I hooked it up to my Macbook Pro Mactel 1.83Mhz, running XP bootcamp, and it stuttered on true HD. The sadder part is it's in my xpmce 2005, with a P4 3Ghz Prescott, 1GB Memory, and PCIe 256 ATI card. Still slightly stutters. Plug the unit to an Athlon XP 2400 w 512MB AGP 256, and it hums fine. What gives? Anycase, I've read the NYTimes review, or was ABC news, I definitely know I get good signal. But I have to say, the stellar part of this unit, is the flimsy, signal sensitive strength of that gaudy antenna. - pcharles23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they show the USB adaptor in a Apple MacBook Pro because its the most powerful laptop made. This will work with parallels because it now supports USB 2.0
- TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem with having video go through a laptop is that there is always a small delay in video, anywhere from a quarter of a second to a few seconds. It's fine for VCRs and DVRs and so on, but it's terrible for video games.
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How is this news? It's basically identical to hundreds of other HD tuners that have been out for years....
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That depends on the tuner. I play games on TV tuners all the time. Not HD of course.
- TrevorBradley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any news if Hauppauge or some other company will make receivers capable of encoding from a digital source?
I found out today that my cable company HD receiver outputs in DVI. Would it be possible to create an MPEG-2 or XviD encoder card that had a DVI-D in connecter?
Or is there some DRM restriction on DVI that prevents this?
Still the problem of switching channels, but we have IR blasters for that. - kwimia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Impossible! I don't like such articles.
