- longhair, on 01/08/2008, -1/+30WOW! I have a Kuro Elite and thought it was pretty black.. Guess I am a *****.
- thekms, on 01/08/2008, -0/+26I want one...
That contrast is freakin' unbelievable. - whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -1/+14Actually, has been discussed ad nauseum on the avsforums, the camera used obviously had it's exposure set up to be really long. So it's the accumulated light over a longer period of time than a split second. This isn't what you'd see if you actually looked at the set.
- GhostWithToast, on 01/08/2008, -3/+12The one on the left is clearly set up poorly. I mean that's like early lcd technology. There's no way it's that bad.
- Ollin, on 01/08/2008, -0/+7Once you go blacker you never go back....er?
- saifatlast, on 01/08/2008, -1/+7I was thinking that, but it could also be that they used a long exposure time (some of the whites were washed out), which made it look brighter than it would otherwise.
- logga0, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5hypocrite
- fkr3, on 01/08/2008, -2/+6Also unbelievable is that gizmodo are now summarising their own articles instead of their usual ploy of just summarising someone else's....
The source for this "news":
http://gizmodo.com/341199/pioneer-unveils-kuro-con ... - streetstealth, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3So the black is produced by actually turning off a pixel instead of leaving it at idle voltage?
This may give you a true R:0 G:0 B:0, but at R:1 G:1 B:1, there's going to be a bit of a jump when the pixel turns back on... You'd end up with a smooth gradient and then serious banding right when it reaches 000 black. - browntiger, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3Yes, but it also was not cool, suffered from screen door effect, poor viewing ang, and had bad reflection if installed next to light source (like window / lamp ).
There are many good reasons why it died. - inactive, on 01/08/2008, -2/+5How to sell new model when the previous one is great... well just do a really bad setup on brightness and contrast and make a perfect one o a newer model.. and Voilà!... the new more expensive model is flying off the shelf like crazy.
I have no doubt that new generation of technology is better than the old one... but not this much better... Pioneer clearly needs to sell new model therefore they must fudge up a show and compare a little bit.
Great TV, really. - JackondaRocks, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3You said it, not me...
- Giga, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3The exposure settings come under the category of setup in my opinion. Also, do you really have to post that same comment so damn often on the same page?
- Velok, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2The exposure time is 0,77 sec. according to the exif.
Pretty long then, and would explain the unnaturally bright black from the Kuro. - GTPro, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Guess you could call it.. dark black?
- banmaster, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Ever compared the thickness and bulk of a DLP to an LCD though??
I know which one I'd rather have hanging on my wall! - ariez84, on 01/08/2008, -2/+4Agreed. Ive seen a properly calibrated Kuro in a complete dark room displaying a black screen and virtually no light was emitted. A properly calibrated Kuro Pro150 will look like the one on the right.
- saifatlast, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Thank you for your groundbreaking insight.
- Urusai, on 01/08/2008, -1/+2Whites whiter, colored's brighter!
- fkr3, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Yes, I was alluding to that. They're complete and utter whores for adi mpressions (weblogs inc too) and digg users do themselves a disservice when they promote it.
- tdkme, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Great story description! Sumbitch... priceless!
- pxmm, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1Pioneer and Sony are the only tv manufacturers that still just convert the $ to a £ to set the price in Europe. All the others brands can be bought for a similar price where I am (UK) as in the US.
- Velok, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1The exposure time is 0,77 seconds according to the exif of the jpg.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1No problem. Like others said, you DO see some blurring. When I say long exposure, I'm not talking about a minute. But think about video being 30fps. Shutter times are normally very short. The whole point of leaving it open longer is to gather more light. Of course, exposure time also depends on what type of lens is used. A larger lens will gather more light than a smaller one over the same exposure. What these pics show is impressive, but not representative of normal viewing on the 8G Kuros.
Here are some other shots:
http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-pione ... - nebion, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1I think I'll wait for a few months worth of reviews after it comes out...but yeah, it might be worth the price (which is going to be pretty high).
- flammenwurfer, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1I would love a Kuro, however their ridiculous prices keep anyone but richie rich from buying one. I'll take my sweet Panasonic for half the price anyday!
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1AeonTorpor: Sound & Vision and Home Theater Magazine tend to disagree with you:

Pioneers can be pricey, especially the Elites. But there's no real reason to go with the Elite unless you just have money to burn. You get the same insane black levels and picture quality with the non-Elites. Just less configurability and no networking option. Plus the prices came way down from their starting points. I just picked up a 4280 for $1760 shipped and set up at Amazon. - neurosport, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1didn't panasonic already have completely black blacks before ?
- Giga, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1They aren't aiming to reduce workload by summarising, it's a ploy to get more links pointing to their other articles so you spend more time on the site (thereby viewing more adverts). Also, it might help with search engine rankings.
- logga0, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1yeah you're an ass
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1I picked up a 42" Kuro (the 4280) for $1760 shipped and set up from Amazon. It's expensive, but that's hardly richie rich.
- vannyner, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1But now when I watch my TV at night I might forget where the TV is ....
- edlowe0, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1wow. pretty lame.
- Giga, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0Two responses:
1) It definitely looks overexposed with slight blurring.
2) What's wrong with showing static images? It is easier to benchmark contrast with static images. - SunAlex, on 09/04/2008, -0/+0very nice. I want one for me)

http://rpgworld.ath.cx/saves.html - Velok, on 01/08/2008, -1/+1Check out the exif before you show us how smart you are. Exposure time of 0,77 seconds is what makes the current Kuro so bright, not bad setup.
- p0tent1al, on 01/08/2008, -1/+1TBE, studder, viewing angle, kthxbai
- directrix13, on 01/08/2008, -1/+1Uhh, the exposure time is what is necessary for us to not have a dark ass picture.
- gadgetgod, on 01/08/2008, -2/+1I don't want to flame things, but if it was a long exposure shot, then why don't we see blurring of the image being displayed? I doubt they were just showing a static image on the screen.
- AeonTorpor, on 01/08/2008, -2/+1If you've seen the 71 series Samsungs you'd already know that the current Pioneers really don't cut it, especially when you factor in their ridiculously high price in comparison.
- skyshock1, on 01/08/2008, -3/+1Um... whoah.
- rancor01, on 01/08/2008, -3/+1it's like, there's none blacker...
quote, anyone.... :0) - BlueStarr, on 01/08/2008, -3/+1Doesn't surprise me that an Asian kid thinks like this. Asians are the most ***** racist people on the planet. It's their whole trying to be like whitey thing. Especially those nice little old Asian ***** you see walking on the street. You think they are saying hi? HA They are far worst than any KKK member. I just ignore these people when ever I see them. Disgusting people.
- viper1613, on 01/08/2008, -2/+0"shedding light like a sumbitch" is right! I guess you could say black just got blacker...
- RyeBrye, on 01/08/2008, -10/+3"whose black literally emits no light"... BFD - DLP has done this for years. Yeah, in an LCD this is cool - and good to see they are approaching the contrast that DLP has had for a long long time.
- ariez84, on 01/08/2008, -8/+1Kuro....more like Negro.
