- deadbaby, on 10/21/2007, -14/+297Totally different. Microsoft's clock is on the left, Apple puts it on the right. Don't be jealous of Microsoft's innovation.
- bullsfan03, on 10/26/2007, -14/+247hope it comes in brown!
- martyFREEDOM, on 10/16/2007, -23/+110It looks like Windows Mobile. That came before the iPhone.
- PatrickA, on 10/22/2007, -4/+67This was posted days ago on a UK blog (not mine) and Wired hasn't even had the decency to credit them with a link even though they copied the images so here is the original story with loads more detail:

- loker269, on 10/26/2007, -11/+52That looks more like my PocketPC's interface than the iPhones.....
- chazuk, on 10/22/2007, -39/+79Who honestly gives a *****?
- marc2242, on 10/16/2007, -7/+45I wish I had patented it.

Oh *****, wait, where am I? - archivist, on 10/16/2007, -9/+33i hope its interface is as good as the new zune's
- winnch, on 10/16/2007, -1/+25You still can! Just do it.
- Amazetbm, on 10/17/2007, -8/+32Who cares? The Apple Newton Interface was the forerunner to most of the Smart Phones and PDAs any way.
- tricks574, on 10/17/2007, -24/+47WHAAAT, MICROSOFT MADE A MOBILE TOUCH SCREEN INTERFACE THAT RESEMBLES THE IPHONE!??!?!? I'm totally stunned that 2 interfaces meant to do exactly the same thing would be similar in design. Come to think of it, Firefox looks a lot like IE at first glance, OBVIOUSLY A SHAMELESS REPRODUCTION, SUE FIREFOX!
- rebotfc, on 10/16/2007, -3/+23caps lock is cruise control for cool...
- dethsesh, on 10/16/2007, -0/+19exactly. the iphone is next to useless to use as a smartphone, and being limited to just one carrier makes it even less appealing
- Terr01, on 10/16/2007, -9/+27The "technology" of shiny smudgy exteriors?
- Rafael, on 10/16/2007, -1/+18Had the author actually read the patent, he would have realized its on the list technology, not the interface, not the rounded rectangular picture, and definitely not the cake. The cake is a lie.
- debuggercll, on 10/16/2007, -0/+17That will be their new tag line: "Hope comes in brown(TM)"
- OssianHanning, on 10/16/2007, -2/+18My patent on air should be approved anytime now.
- strictnein, on 10/16/2007, -0/+15I hope to get hired by them someday. Then I can tell everyone that I got a RIM job.
- kelly, on 10/16/2007, -2/+17Nobody ever claimed that Apple owned touch screen...
multi-touch is theirs - freezeout, on 10/16/2007, -6/+20uh Joe I'm gonna have to call you back, I'm getting this weird "error #8762763 MSPHNXTT.DLL" thing on my screen
- Terr01, on 10/16/2007, -4/+17Heresy! Apple INVENTED the graphical PDA!
:P - sonicEd, on 10/16/2007, -0/+13Based on what diggers seem to think, you still can!
- doctechnical, on 10/16/2007, -1/+13I wish I'd patented the wheel.
- foober, on 10/16/2007, -0/+12change the wording of the title. they FILED a patent application for a patent, not patented. HUGE difference between the two.
- FutureGuy, on 10/16/2007, -2/+11Who is copying who?

"This is a continuation application of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 11/424,713, filed Jun. 16, 2006, entitled "EXTENSIBLE, FILTERED LISTS FOR MOBILE DEVICE USER INTERFACE", which claims the benefit under 35 U.S.C. 119(e) of U.S. Provisional Patent application Ser. No. 60/718,187 entitled "ENHANCED PORTABLE DEVICE NAVIGATION TOOLS" and filed Sep. 16, 2005, the entirety of these applications are incorporated herein by reference."
The orignal patent was filed in 2005!!! - MichaelDaley, on 10/16/2007, -1/+10The best thing about Surface is that it can't crash... it can only become a coffee table
- willgonz, on 10/16/2007, -3/+12Well as of now 163 people do.
- TechCF, on 10/16/2007, -0/+9Thought the images was found on the patent office site
- inactive, on 10/16/2007, -6/+15It wouldn't surprise me if it were real... the copyright/patent office are ***** jokes.
It's basically a legal form of extortion.
Like how MS patented the ultra common ***** sense "body electricity generated device" - I believe we all thought about that before they registered the damn thing. Now if anyone goes to make it, we owe them royalties? ***** that. - Ramble, on 10/16/2007, -2/+11It's not. It looks extremely similar and suspicious but you have to read through patent applications carefully. What they're actually patenting is basically a list of stuff on your phone which you can customise. It's got nothing to do with the iPhone, which doesn't even have the feature I'm talking about.
- Shiner6, on 10/16/2007, -1/+10Yes I have used windows mobile, and that's why I love the iPhone.
- TheDreadDiggerD, on 10/16/2007, -0/+8Smash it against the wall for that function.
- jschramm03, on 10/16/2007, -3/+10What do you see them doing over the 18 months? Gain mainstream supports from thousands of companies around the word? What do you really think companies are outfit their employees with, a $200 proven wireless email device or a $400 toy. Just because 1 million people wanted the latest cool thing from Apple doesnt mean that it will ever gain the support that RIM has worldwide.
- joshuaer, on 10/16/2007, -5/+12Bill gates mmm lets call it voicemail visuals and patent the crap out of it. Also how is the the patent on the double click coming!!
- Elranzer, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6That's funny because the iPhone doesn't even come close to touching the technology behind Japanese cell phones that they've had since 2001.
- noahhoward, on 10/16/2007, -1/+7Bill?
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6People see Jesus in burnt toast, so its not much surprise to me that when they look at plans for a graphical phone interface, they see... another graphical phone interface!
- fluxion, on 10/16/2007, -2/+8its not about suing MS, its about MS setting themselves up to sue everyone else for a patent on an obvious design that was implemented by someone else before the patent even took effect.
its about ***** patents and why they should be purged from human civilization. - rebotfc, on 10/16/2007, -1/+7they did
- santaliqueur, on 10/15/2007, -0/+6If your dog didn't even recognize a laugh, your household must be a ton of fun to be in.
- ubergeek09, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5What Terrk said is true, Apple never really invents anything anymore..
- facereplacer, on 10/16/2007, -6/+11Biased a little there robwilkens? I mean, I don't see how you can think you're offering up an objective comment.
Why is it Windows users don't seem to really like Windows, they just really hate Mac!? - Elranzer, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5EAT UP MARTHA ?
- Atomic1fire, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5I_AM_
- dethsesh, on 10/16/2007, -2/+7Blackberry is not a company, its RIM
- razishaban, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5Keep us posted.
- deadbaby, on 10/15/2007, -0/+5I have owned a couple Windows Mobile devices. My biggest problem was the stylus driven touch screen. When I have my hands full the last thing I want to do is stop and undock a stylus so I can quickly find some bit of information. I also thought the overall quality of the apps were terrible. Safari is light years ahead of mobile IE. The phone app requires way too much stulus kung fu to do anything. The "today screen" is useless to me.
