HD TiVo has been out for at least a year, but up until this unit, only worked on DirecTV. The only difference in the new Series 3 boxes is that they work with OTA and cable signals, and apparently allow you to plug in external drives as well. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
I LOVE TIVO!
But, its toooooo little way toooo late.
They are a dead company walking at this point. They had their chance to be THE PVR, but refused to not be so greedy and didn't work out deals to license their stuff to the cable companies. And they gave all the cable people time to build their own boxes and cut them out of the market. Even their largest customer DirectTV has now built their own box.
Their days are numbered, there are soon going to a hobbiest-only choice because all the normal people will be using the propeitary box offered by their cable/sat company. They will not be able to survive on only hobbiest-level income, because why would a hobbiest buy a tivo with DRM and stuff built in when you can just build your sell a system that does everything TIVO's do and more WITHOUT added DRM.
Bye bye tivo, its nice to have known you. I loved my series1, and I loved my DirecTV series2, it was pleasure hacking it and giving you guys all kinds of ideas of stuff you should have included in the product from the start. But when directtv takes my tivo away this year, im going Myth. - spidertrace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I copied the pics and put them on my server also to help out.
They are located here

- jimmyM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is nice, because it has the tivo interface. but the cable company will rent you similar equipment for cheap. no need to buy hardware. but this solves the problem of watching premium channels on the tivo without an ir blaster. my question is whether you can get the on-demand content from the cable company with this thing. i would assume that is the whole point of the cablecard 2.0, but i dunno. what am i, a scientist?
i have a tv with cablecard, and it is nice because i only have one remote. i like that. - haqattaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those pics are huge..

- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea but does it have built in Ethernet? Thats about all they need to get me to upgrade..
- TWiTarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think it's about time i invest in a dvr.
- lonseidman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This thing is going to cost a fortune. But I'll take two :).

- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0tivos like this are awesome. but im gona stick with my myth box. i loves my mythbox....loves it
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its about time TiVo is coming out with their Series3 & HD susport. The Tivo HD have been in the vaporware department for too long.
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good for Tivo - judging from the comments above, they've got a winner on their hands. Whenever I hear geeks say something along the lines of 'I was planning to build one myself, but this puppy does everything I want' you know you're going to sell a ***** of these... I'm glad - always hoped Tivo would not go under...
- RAT-Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good job TiVo. Will put my cable card to good use without having to use the crappy Comcast DVR box.
- wolrah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was planning on dropping my TiVo and homebrewing a HTPC with either Myth or MCE, but this looks like it's exactly what I want. If it comes out before I start collecting parts for the HTPC, especially if CableCard works well, I guess I'll stick with the TiVo + Xbox arrangement I have now rather than building anything.
- kbdrand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God that sucks. No satellite support with the new box. :(
- deadkenny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And will we see them in the UK?... like hell we will :(
- NMENVadR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Boy am I glad I just bought Tivo!!!
...damn it. - djtripp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, oh man, do i want one.
The remote control is still lame. I like the original one that I got with my Sony TiVo years ago. That is still the best remote. - famario, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey where r u located?
I got 2 tivos.
1 series 2
1 series 3
Maybe we should exchange some informations.
Im in Vancouver.

Fabio - Azlen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't recall Replay having dual tuner HD that could replace the cable company's box.
I have a series 2 and the cable company's DVR for HD. The functionality on the cable company's box sucks and I will be getting a series 3 as soon as it hits the market. - Prockman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People have been saying Tivo will die ever since I bought my first Series 2 three years ago.
This Series 3 is a godsend to everyone who currently has a Series 2. Levels the playing field compared to all the other DVR/PVRs out there.
Its funny that I can generalize and see that the people that complain about the horrific and terrible ads that take up "all this space" do not actually own a Tivo. I can honestly say I have not had any of my programming interrupted by these "horrible, distracting" ads. Get over it.
What Tivo now needs to do is add support for PC video files (divx, wmv, etc.) to uploaded to it from the PC. They now barely support mpeg-2 to be uploaded to the Series 2. Once they get over that hurdle, there will be nothing separating it from MCE and the other DVRs.
They better allow some sort of transfer of lifetime service from Series 2 to Series 3. That's all I gotta say. Rumors are this thing will cost $500-$800 when you add $300 onto that, you're looking at $800-$1000. That's a little steep for me.
CoolHandLuke, you just answered your own question:
"I never understood why Replay TV never caught on."
Tivo played nice with the MPAA and Replay didn't. End result: Tivo is still alive today.
If you can't beat them join 'em. - onlychild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"They had their chance to be THE PVR, but refused to not be so greedy and didn't work out deals to license their stuff to the cable companies."
Umm... they did do a licensing deal w/ Comcast and one or two other smaller cable companies.
"a company that pushes unsolicited commercials to the box that YOU own. Tivo is a slave to the MPAA and they bowed down to Hollywood by forcing certain shows to be automatically deleted from your Tivo because of copyright laws."
I've never been forced to watch a commercial. Are you talking about the bottom line on the main TiVo page where you can _optionally_ view a promotion?
Let's see how the "Hollywood" flag gets used before we comment on it. - haqattaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How do you explain no inputs for satellite support? coax doesn' cut it..
- Supergeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Standalone HD TiVo has been a LONG time coming. I just hope it's not too little too late too expensive. I have a DVR through my cable company that works tolerably well. I love the TiVo interface, but not enough to pay $1000 for it.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CableCard is a neat idea, but I have a few problems with it. First is that it only works with digital cable and not satellite TV. This doesn't really make any sense, considering both satellite receivers and digital cable receivers do almost the same thing, except with a small difference in decoding the signal before moving on to decryption and decoding.
The second problem is that cablecard devices are extremely rare, at least in Canada. I've never seen a TV that supports them, either in somebody's house or in a TV store, although I haven't looked specifically for them.
The third problem is that no cable company (Again, in Canada) seems to support them; at least not any local cable company. - deadkenny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Even their largest customer DirectTV has now built their own box."
That's because Rupert Murdoch owns it and TiVo is competition to his lower cost and more controllable PVR platform(s). Here in the UK, Mr. Murdoch owns Sky and it's their PVR (Sky+) that has been such a major block to TiVo. Murdoch essentially dominates the market now with his inferior product, as he saturates Sky channels with adverts for it, to such an extent that the UK public only know the word 'Sky+' when it comes to defining what a PVR is.
TiVo tried marketing in the UK, but they forgot that marketing actually involves telling people about it ;-). Though it has a thriving community based on the series 1 boxes they did release, it's a small community and TiVo is essentially no more in the UK and never will be with Murdoch around.
Wouldn't be surprised if he's using the same platform in the US now. It's crap, but it's popular over here which is such a shame as TiVo is vastly superior but we can't get integrated boxes thanks to Murdoch's domination and his refusal to allow anyone to build their own boxes that don't use Sky's own software. - StarWarsFever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know Milo, but it seems their new deals w/ Apple, Sony, and Yahoo are keeping them ontop of their game just fine.
I find your lack of faith disturbing... - Prockman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We get it, you guys from Canada don't have have CableCard!
It will still record two signals over a regular cable setup!
Also, I don't get why people are all up in arms about the thing not being able to record off a satellite feed. IT'S A STAND ALONE.....HELLLLLOOOOOOOO!!!
You've had your HD DirecTivo for over a year. What's wrong with that one? - Durvivor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Features Sign (partial) -> http://homepage.mac.com/durvivor/digg/TiVo3Sign1.JPG
