- vitriolix, on 01/08/2009, -0/+54Wow. That looks amazingly good. I must say I'm totally shocked that Palm pulled it off...
- lavellemueller, on 01/08/2009, -0/+25i would have never expected this from palm... so much so that the logo alone makes it hard for me to accept the complete awesomeness of what I'm seeing. Apple better think of some cool ***** for 3.0....
- scootinger, on 01/08/2009, -0/+18I thought that Palm was headed down the tubes since the "new" Palm OS has been a piece of vaporware for years and years. However, I'm quite shocked to see Palm come out with something that is VERY slick and nice like this. It looks like Palm is ready to make a huge comeback...I like my Centro and they've done a great job of marketing the Centro as a PDA phone to the masses. However, my biggest problem with it was that its OS had not changed much in a DECADE or so...hopefully this will change all of that!
- trigatch4, on 01/09/2009, -0/+12All those years of suffering through crappy Palm offerings (cough Foleo cough) may have been worth it. They may not only have salvaged the company but put themselves back on the top since its not just one phone... its an OS that is likely to have equally impressive hardware following in the Pre footsteps.
http://palmpre.org - cmansley, on 01/09/2009, -2/+12Finally, we actually might have some innovation in the touch screen arena. The paradigm hasn't changed much, even with the arrival of the iPhone. But, with phones like this providing slick interfaces to multi-process control, Microsoft and Apple will need to keep developing better ways of interfacing. Sorry Symbian but most people don't even know they are using you. Between this and Android, we may see a halfway usable smart phone in the next 2 years.
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -1/+10What, an article about palm impressions and no one's posted this?

- CCB0x45, on 01/09/2009, -1/+9As an iphone fanboy, I gotta say this thing does look really slick, the form factor looks great, the interface looks awesome(still gotta try it in person). The keyboard would be a great addition and it looks like they managed to keep it as a reasonable size.
My only problems I could see:
1. Less screen size for the same res, with the iphone you use every millimeter of that screen size.
2. The CSS/HTML/Javascript will be awesome to allow everyone and their mother make a good utility app for the phone, which will be great, and it wont be slow because it is running off the phone and not the web. But for games you need native code, especially for open GL stuff. And some apps just can't be done without native C and Open GL... and currently games are one of my favorite things about the iphone, I am addicted to that command and conquer style game, and that just wouldnt be feasible in CSS/HTML.
Great job to palm to stepping the bar up.
EDIT: one other fault I forgot about, who named that thing... worst name for a phone ever. - buzzbeater, on 01/09/2009, -3/+11W: Um, excuse me your highness, Mr. Jobs... but Palm just released a phone that kicks "our phone's" ass in every way....
SJ: Shut up, *cough* go *cough* get me my bottled water and medicines!!
W: What shall we do now sir?
SJ: Release the Iphone CopyPaste Pro!! Curse you palm! I've been saving that one for 2010! - inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6Wow! i want it.
- epyon180, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6I'm actually excited for this, a legit competitor to the iPhone is good for both iPhone users and the rest of the industry. I will keep a close eye on this and if its good enough i will replace my iPhone with it.
- crazzy88ss, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6Looks sweet. I think I may have found my Centro replacement!
- Antietam27, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5pre (pree) is the word for fruit in hebrew
wonder if that had anything to do with naming it - specialk2hz, on 01/09/2009, -1/+6Sprint is great.
- buu2, on 01/09/2009, -1/+5Damn it. While I've been wondering if Palm's a good stock to buy, it's risen from $1.50 to $4.50 in the last 3 weeks! Probably still a great investment but I could have really used the 3x boost now
- Dylson, on 01/09/2009, -1/+5I think we all are.
- InorganicMatter, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4I must say I am shocked an impressed. This isn't enough to part me with my iPhone - partially because I'm chained to AT&T and partially because I love Mobile Safari, but this device may very well be the first device that causes Apple worry and drives competition. Here's why the Pre is going to succeed where Android and WinMo has failed:
Dedicated hardware-specific OS. Sorry, generic "one size fits all hardware" OSes have been historically proven not to work.
480 x 320 display. What is it with WinMo devices and (sub)QVGA resolutions?
Exchange email support. The number one reason Andriod will never succeed.
8GB of internal (!!!) storage. Normal people don't care about card swapping. Just build in enough to begin with. So far, the iPhone and N95 are the only ones who got this right.
3.5mm headphone jack. Enough said here. Words cannot describe how upset I was at the G1 for this. - SteveMax, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3It's a TI OMAP 3430, which has an ARM Cortex A8 core. Even if they underclocked it heavily, it would still be faster than two PSPs, or three iPhones, put together. It is a VERY capable device.
- enochthewalker, on 01/09/2009, -1/+4I pay $15 a month with Sprint for unlimited data, and use a free 3rd party app for push email. Also, they offer discounts to employees from certain companies. I get 40% off of my bill thanks to teh company that I used to work for.
- benitojuarez, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3what app do you use for push mail?
- Aitese, on 01/09/2009, -1/+4No matter how good this thing is, people will continue to buy the iPhone. I've had and used several mp3 players better than the iPod, but people still buy iPod.
(I own an iPod) - emix, on 01/09/2009, -2/+5I wish data plans were not such an outrageous rip-off
- cvrefugee, on 01/09/2009, -3/+5AT&T and Verizon get exclusives all the time, it's time Sprint got something.
- hahn, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Ahahahahaha....I've held onto my shares of Palm for nearly 10 years. I sold off the last remaining shares in Dec 08 to deduct the losses. Life is a cruel bitch.
- JigoroKano, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3Why didn't they make it slide out long ways. Keyboard looks unusable with my thumbs.
- ZeroSum1975, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3The thing is, that it's all about the OS but it's not about the OS. A good OS, like MAC OS X or the stripped down version of MAC OS X that's in the iPhone is that you don't even realize it's an operating system. It doesn't get in the way, it's natural, it's intuitive. This seems to be all about the OS. Another thing, no iTunes, no App Store with 10,000 apps plus, no mobile me. A little display. Plus as it says in the article. They were playing with a prototype version. Again, prototype or concept. Apple's products are actually material. No prototypes or conceptions for Apple. They show it to you and it's pretty much out in the market right away.
- Lynxpro, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Bono would be happy if you purchased some Palm stock...
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2The reviewers are lax on the details and I don't know why. Out of the box users will be able to adhoc add apps for the platform without the service as well as use their legacy apps from the old palm devices. The phone os is a customized linux distro and supports native linux apps with the new PalmOS apis along with with the web based stuff. If the devices sell well, I'd expect to see a lot more diversity in software than what you see on the iphone since it's a more open platform and you are permitted to run unsigned apps on the device.
- ziggotron, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Pre-lude for Palm's future offerings?
- BrendanSheehan, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1It's the worst thing about the phone. Give me 10 seconds... Palm Earth, Palm 1. Both those names are better than "Palm Pre", and they took a total of ten seconds to come up with. Take a day and I'm sure you could come up with a great name. That said, I've heard of worse.
- themadcracker, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2http://www.roflposters.com/implied-facepalm-when-a ...
- BossKey, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1The iPhone is ahead now, but Apple can be beaten. All that has to happen is for Apple to become complacent about its walled garden while other systems address emerging innovations and feature requests more quickly. It's how the Mac declined in the mid-90s, after their initial superiority but before their renaissance.
This Palm phone seems to have more good features - and importantly, fewer obvious flaws - than most of the challengers so far.
That's not meant to be anti-Apple (I own Macs), just the truth. - BrendanSheehan, on 01/09/2009, -2/+3To say it kicks the iPhone's ass in every way is a little premature. Firstly, one of the complaints Android got was that it has no soft keyboard "also". Engadget has said this is a negative, when typing something small you have to slide out the keyboard. Also, there's no reviews of battery life, the battery life could be super or terrible. App store could suck. No iTunes integration. Unknowns. Unforseens. It's simply to early to make sweeping statements like that. Though it does look impressive.
- iericg, on 01/09/2009, -2/+3The interface is slick... but the demo only showed text & images. And the web page they demo was mainly text. It has a GPS but they didn't demo the map application.
I'm also curious how well it'll work after they release the SDK. You know the first thing third party developers are going to do is sell apps that push phone's limit.
The only good thing I see so far is maybe a catalyst for Apple to finally consider Copy & Paste a priority. - badtz, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2I'm still not quite sure what all of the hubbub is about the Pre? Hardware wise, it's nothing that we haven't seen. Software, I'm interested in their new 'deck of cards' metaphor, and how applicable that is to real-world use, and I'm also curious how they are implementing "synergy". Compared to the iPhone, it has smaller resolution, and doesn't even come near competition in the music/video/media space. The only thing (and it's a big one) it annihilates the iPhone at is the 3MP camera.
- magus_melchior, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1They may be referring to the "prototype" the same way Google refers to a lot of its apps as "beta". That prototype looked awfully feature-complete and there are few, if any, reports of bugs. Maybe there are show-stopping bugs in the legacy apps or some features may be incomplete, but it seems they're well on-target to launch this fall.
Also, they're saying that all new apps for this device will require little more than web dev know-how. If it really is that simple, I wouldn't be surprised to see a community of developers grow quickly. - Lynxpro, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1The Mac was not superior to the Atari ST or the Commodore Amiga. What you mean is the Mac's superiority to PC/DOS/Windows back before Windows95. Prior to that, Apple was happy to charge two to three times the price of their competitors for Mac products.
In today's world, I use Macs [but PCs at the office] but I certainly wish the ST and the Amiga were still around in modern versions... - enochthewalker, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1I am currently using the windows mobile app for my funambol http://my.funambol.com/c/portal/layout?p_l_id=defa ... I am not really sure what other devices it will work on. The downside is it only pushes one email account, not a problem for me but might be for some.
I have also used the system seven beta which would push more than one account but it was a little buggier than funambol. You will have to google it, I am too lazy. - Wolfboy, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1small points of correction:
The iPhone and Palm Pre have the same screen resolution (320 by 480 pixels). But yes, the Pre's screen is smaller. Same number of dots, just closer together.
As for music/video/media - the old Palm models easily played music and videos for years before the iPhone came on the market. With the right software on the phone/handheld and the desktop computer, the old Palm models integrate with iTunes. It likely like it won't be long, if not at launch, before the new Pre does the same. - Lynxpro, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Funny, even if attacking Steve's health is rather distasteful to me.
- freeridstylee, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1I think the thing that will be success or failure for this device will be price. If they can't match the iphones (w/contract that is) and the G1's $200 price point, I think they are doomed. But they hopefully learned this with the Centro.

- ritaroys, on 01/16/2009, -0/+0This is a very good review on Palm Pre. Another comeback for Palm. I saw another review and a couple of videos at the below link. Check out if anyone wants to know more:-
http://www.kanbal.com/index.php?/Electronics/palm- ... - dwang5, on 01/09/2009, -0/+0The fact that they aren't talking about battery life means that its not going to be great. If it was good, they would be touting it like no tomorrow.
It doesn't seem possible to pack so much power into the palm pre and still have great battery life. - ltdanicecream, on 01/14/2009, -0/+0Found another great article about the new Palm Pre
http://www.iphonespies.com/iphone-news/iphone-3g-v ... - fandyllic, on 01/10/2009, -0/+0I won't bury this article, but putting the following 2 statements in the same article is just stupid...
1. actually may be quite a bit more revolutionary than the iPhone
2. but there are limitations. 3D gaming, for instance, won't be possible, at least with version 1.0 of the OS
How can you be a bit more revolutionary than the iPhone and not allow 3D games? LAME! - fandyllic, on 01/10/2009, -0/+0Yeah, but Google's over-use of beta is only to protect itself from the fact that it doesn't want to QA its own stuff.
Until its a shipping product, prototype = demo. - dragossh, on 01/10/2009, -0/+0The only way Apple can be beaten is using people from Apple to make a better iPhone. That's what Palm did :)
@thedanilo: I have a hunch we still won't see multitasking in iPhone OS 3.0. - dragossh, on 01/10/2009, -0/+0Apple?
