- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44That heat sink is the size of a Wii.
They overall system design inside in the PS3 is better than the 360, they used a huge heat sink and used one giant fan to create less noise. That's why it's much quieter than the 360. They place the motherboard up side down so the heat exhaust is blown away from hard drive and blueray player that's on top. That power supply is the most amazing part of the whole system.
Sony's PS3 system design is kicking ass, wish I say that on any of their other stuff. This might be is first good PR for them in years. - MattR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25If that was American two things would be different, one it would be sped up, and two there would be some annoying BUTT ROCK playing in the background
- MattR, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26I’ll wait for the smash my PS3 video to see what the inside looks like.
- jivemasta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20It looks like they are trying to take apart a piece of alien technology for the first time.
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16They were laughing at you.
- tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17How uneventful.......
- Smok3y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10At first I think they were geekin' out over that gigantic fan on the bottom.
- GT35R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I think that was the battery.
- hisjap2003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Now, let's see if they can put it back together!
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The only time there was a problem overheating was when they were locked in small plastic display cases at TGS.
All the game sites that have gotten units recently say it stays cool to the touch. - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I wonder how small they will be able to get the PS3 in 4 years.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Man, that is easily the biggest fan and biggest heatsink I have ever seen on a piece of consumer equipment. If that fan ever stops, the PS3 will probably detonate.
It makes the heatsink/fans on the 360 look miniscule. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Looks like a game console gangbang.

now THAT is a heat sink. is there still problems with them overheating? i ask merely for information - bakagaigin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well, you can kinda just look at the screw heads to see that.
- Smok3y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Parts 2, 3 and 4 are in the related bar for those that didn't notice...
- Sailboat37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Your parents help you hook it up."
- cikizm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Rules are made to be broken! There will be tons of mods to come for the PS3 in the nearby future. :D
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@bigtomrodney,
It was part 3 of the video. It's not "much better" it's just a skip forward to the point where they take the heat sink out. - yoda133113, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4using an electric screwdriver on that might not be a good idea, not very delicate, and they are working with delicate equipment.
- Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4that's a rather large fan
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4watch parts 2, 3, and 4
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The difference is that the Japanese-disassembled PS3 can be reassembled. The redneck one will remain disassembled and placed next to the rusting Plymouth Duster in the front yard.
- electronaught, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=FCB476C6BD64A175
- SuperCujo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6That heat sink is huge and with a nice big slow fan pushing the air around it should make for a pretty quiet system.
The packaging is typically japanese and looks good.
Can't wait till they hit Australian shores for a bit of play testing... - wtf00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm not sure where you getting your news.. but over here a lot new yorker are excited for PS3.. gamestop around my area is sold out on ps3... but I won't be blind about it that is possible ps3 could be a failure too.... my money is on PS3 is going to take while to get into people household because the price but as soon the price drop a lot of us going for it.. sure hell Im going for it when is around 300..
- jeznav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Reminds me of those quiet Zalman fans.

- LethalAmbition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcoEA69MuYM
Part 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdB2qQPv7LI
Part 4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOf5m8XH4pY - OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wonder what all those tapes were for. Are they "Warranty void if removed" tapes?
- quoquo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"We are now disassembling PLAYSTATION3!"
Hai! - trogdor282, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does the PS3 have an emotion engine in it?
Even if it does I'm pretty sure that other chip is the NVIDIA GPU. An EE on a modern process would put out about 1 watt.
All in all I gotta say that's a kickass heat system. - dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Only difference is if you touch the engine on your car it won't die on you, but if you touch the delicate electronic components such as those inside the PS3 / XBOX / WII / etc and don't know about static discharge from your own body then you could just fry it in an instant. I can just imagine some ignorant teenager opening up his PS3 to have a look, because it's cool, whilst rubbing his feet on a nylon carpet and ZAP! Mobo is fried "I'll just send it back under warranty"... Thank god the stickers ARE there, because in the end this would just inflate the cost of buying an already expensive piece of equipment for everyone else. That is why people put videos like this on YouTube a: because they have the money to burn and b: it satisfies the curious like me, who would never dream of taking apart a machine like this unless it was for a mod chip or something which had really detailed instructions... And even then.
Interesting to see this thing, I seem to remember they struggled with cramming everything in it at one point (or so the net rumors said) and it is quite a remarkable bit of engineering. I think this is, in terms of layout and structure, truly a marvelous machine and seems a little more structured than the Xbox360 (I'm not a fanboy or anything just a fan of technology). Not sure about the asking price but hey, maybe in a coupla years time. - anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Arrival videos
Unpacking videos
Disassembly videos
Do we really need all of them? How about some gameplay videos! - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I bet Sony is already working on or has a PS3 "Slim".
- artur.ventura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mike? I know them! They are from Xbox 360 Team!
- electronaught, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yah it might have taken one person 15 mins just to get off the cover...those things can be a pain in the arse especially since its brand new hardware.
- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I watched nealy 3 minutes to just see the cover come off! Where's the guided tour! Cheers desdinovaguitar, that link was much better.
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am very skeptical of Sony’s designs but I must say the heat sink looks very good. I don’t know how well it will work when the average consumer puts in an airless stereo cabinet but it just might not explode after all.
- Abennobashi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sony should have added a self destruct. Would have made it more entertaining.
- Combat247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, i submitted this before you.... still nice vid though :D. i hope they get it back together alright :S.
- B0jangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Disassemble?! DISASSEMBLE?! No disassemble Stephanie!
- charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know, I'm concerned about that too. I plan to put mine in an airless cabinet. I might just have to wait a year to make sure these issues are ironed out. Then again, I might not be able to get one in the first year anyway if they can't make enough.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reminds me of the 8800GTX.
http://firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_8800_preview/images/21.jpg - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that would make sense... since the ps3 is the size of a small house--so is the xbox 360 (if you count its power brick/supply/converter/inverter/transformer (whatever you want to call it).
- bshep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone have any ideas what the PCMCIA-looking thing was on the controller?
Wi-Fi card? Movement Sensor? - chudgoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since no one will see the other story I submitted...(or this, probably)
Here are 71 high(er) resolution (640x480) pics of all of the parts inside the PS3.
http://s137.photobucket.com/albums/q208/chudgoo/PS3%20Disemboweled/?start=all - bshep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you are correct sir, it is the battery. I found a good picture of it on a photobucket site someone posted later on.
- disasterix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"star screwdriver with the peg" is called torx security. These can be found just about anywhere.
- itseffinkasey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6That movie is so intense! It pulls you in there at the end because you just don't know if they are going to open it before the clip ends!
