- maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let's get honost here people, it was pretty apparent that no one was going to blow anyone out of the water. Microsoft intentionally waited for hardware design from sony so they would know just how powerful they needed to make 360.
Let's compare face to face.
Processors:
360:
3 CPU's
PS3:
1 CPU + 7 SPU
SPU: synergistic(or specialized) processing unit, it's not quite a whole CPU, but can contain anywhere from 10-90% of the functionality. Bearing in mind that it may contain 10% the functionality but it can do the functions it's assigned orders of magnitude faster than a general CPU.
Review: The PS3 has more horse power, the SPU's increase the physics abilities of the PS3 nearly exponentially. 360 has 3 linked CPU's, these are complete processors dual threaded, therefore 360 may run 6 threads concurrently and the PS3 can run 8 since the CPU is dual threaded in the PS3. 6 vs 8 threads
Conclusion: PS3 will handle more complex interelated tasks for more concurrent in game activity. The Cell architecture is all that is cracked up to be, if only sony doesn't get tripped up as you'll read below.
Memory:
360:
512MB GDDR3 unified @700Mhz
PS3:256 XDR + 256 GDDR3 @550Mhz
Review: The 360 is very strong in this area, PS3's two smaller while linked memory structures force a performance cost if you exceed the initial limit. It has yet to be seen whether this will cause a major issue and if PS3's memory manager can properly manage this.
Conclusion: the better memory structure and speed in 360 presents clear advantage for battling latency. PS3's raw power will suffer if memory becomes a bottleneck.
Graphics:
Since both graphics solutions are custom, it's hard to make a clear assessment.
360:
GPU flop rating somewhere just under 1TFLOP
PS3:
GPU flop rating claimed 1.8TFLOP
Review: Well these numbers are nice, but don't really tell us anything, PS3 has that little nagging fact that memory is slower and smaller than 360's, if memory becomes an issue, than the 1.8TFLOP estimated rating won't matter.
Conclusion: it'll be impossible to know until we can see some real graphic conclusions, PS3 edges ahead with more graphics potential.
Overall, PS3 has the potential to crush the competition, it will come down to the exclusive title developers maximizing the potential, and if the memory config doesn't cause PS3 to trip, i suspect that cross platform developers will not alter their titles because of hardware, if 360 and PS3 can perform at the same level they will, developers won't go out of their way to decide who the market leader will be by supping up a game for one console or the other.
