- ReXorcist, on 10/12/2007, -6/+43I have a question: If the Mac mini is running XP while you're driving, will the car crash?
yeah, yeah, digg me down, I just had to. - suman78, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26and operating that with wiiremote would be cool....
- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24A mac inside of a Prius?
I can smell the smug from here. - StephenBrown, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Oh no! You misspelled Prius! (Sorry, Toyota fanboy speaking ;-)
But I do have to say it's pretty neat! Adding the Wiimote would make this even more killer!
Here's the guy's website for all the juicy details. (more pics and vids too!)
http://www.kusnetz.net/prius/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15i wonder if the touch-screen display is functional...
- czer323, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15http://www.kusnetz.net/prius/ states that the touchscreen IS functional!
Kinda anyway, he setup the touchscreen in a 3x3 grid and then remapped the quadrants to certain keys you'd use in Frontrow. - slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@cadillaccactus
Yup. I've done this before, but with windows xp and an 8" touchscreen for my car pc. There are special apps that are made specifically for media use. That is a nice setup, looks very stock looking. There are a lot more installs at the http://mp3car.com forums. That's where I first learned of this and this has been going on for a while. It's a great site for learning how to build your own, and with tips on what you need. - slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=25
Some are great installs, some are kind of cheesy, but will give you a lot of examples. - bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is the Mini (or any other PC) really suited to take the kind of high and low temperature spikes encountered inside a car?
- PsychoDeli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://www.kusnetz.net/prius/
Article about the installation and use. - netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3# Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
# Storage temperature: -40° to 116° F (-40° to 47° C)
# Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
So unless your going to be driving with your A/C off in the desert, or parking your car in the Artics, I think you'll be fine.
Hmm, I wonder what the operating and storage temps for the Prius are.... - tarrmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the wayback machine wants this story back
- jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So are you.
- Mylonite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most of the 2006 Prius have an upgraded display unit - I've been thinking about doing something similar since I got it.
FTR, since the car is designed to actually *drive* when the motor is off, the electrical system is far more capable than the one in JoeBob's old truck. People have been known to use their Prius as a backup generator - just less than 2kw, iirc. I think the car can probably handle the 40 watts the Mini pulls. - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice easy setup cuz it already has a nice interface and it fits in his dash w/o mod? Would also be cool if he made a front panel to replace the existing one.

I doubt this will present a problem for the massive batteries in a Prius. - joepaterno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is great. Now just pop in your Al Gore video and head on over to the gay pride parade.
- madchemst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is all fine and good but what about his standard prius interface? How does he know his gas mileage and all other data that's usually there?
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It would have been nice if the article had linked to this instead of just a picture... but nice to find it in the comments at least.
- lonnieh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"# Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)"
I'm sure they were playing it safe with those numbers. I haven't used my car PC in the summer, but I have started it up in freezing temperature, no probs. - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why is this hard to do?
It'l take more time to PS this than to just do it..
pfft. - Halsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm, you can see from the visitor links that this site has made it to digg frontpage 4 times.
Not saying its a dupe... - bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hybrids have alternators, so it's going to be pretty much like any other car in terms of its ability to handle electronics. Also, considering that he used this as a PSU:
http://www.carnetix.com/CNXP1900.htm
It's not drawing 120/220v anyway. - jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10Why the ***** would you need a wiimote?
You know Apple has its own remote, specially designed for front row, right? - TheGilmanator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My laptop gets turned on while frozen all the time. Not the brightest idea but, hey, it works.
- micklerlop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2isn't this so 2005?
- ElectricKetchup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@netburnr
# Storage temperature: -40° to 116° F (-40° to 47° C)
I don't know about where you live, but here in Texas, the dash can easily go over 120F in the summer. If the dash was a darker color, that would make it even hotter. Cracking your windows when you park and using a windshield reflector would probably help, but even then it might go over 120F. I wouldn't roll my windows all the way down if I had a nice setup like that. - diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ah this is pretty cool. i remember seeing this some time back. nice how the prius comes with a touch screen like that.
- jasz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I've been wanting to do this for the longest time... this looks great!
Too bad the Prius is such an ugly car... - craz3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@scorn, I was thinking the same thing before I read your comment. The only thing he needs now is a special cup holder for his double mocha soy latte espressofrapocinni
- ebs16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought the same... doesn't he need that screen to get vital stats and to control some other components the car?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a link to the mp3car.com forum for a software called AMP, which is a free front-end for in-car Macs. It really is better than FrontRow.
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=140 - tobyjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it's easy, go ahead and make your own, post it. Put this Digg story on there.
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1shame the aspect ratio is off...
I think. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Ah, nothing like a dashboard computer to distract the driver. Cell phones are bad enough.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ya, how insane!!
Cannot be real. - Kratos76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm gonna have to get me one of these PRUISes! LOL
- ODSTKuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm this picture seems to have been taken at 5:15.
Captain Obvious Awaaaayy!!! - bks1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0amazing. Just think, bluetooth phone to the MAC, video camera in the car, and you could teleconference from the car and make this 60 minute commute every day worthwhile.
- slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1With proper ventilation it should be no problem. If you consider that most of these computers are stuck inside the dash it should be no problem. They're usually right next to the air ducts and in certain cases the air ducts need to be removed to a certain extent.
- scilec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This thread needs some ritalin.
- ithildin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is a pretty old story...
http://www.digg.com/search?s=mac+mini+prius&submit=Search§ion=news&type=both&area=all&age=all&sort=new - Jagwire2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This guy knows what he's talking about. I use AMP. Now, AMP 2?!?
- OnlyShawn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1yes, but he could listen to "Intergalactic" on it....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4agreed, being able to control this from the backseat would be awesome for kids. and hell, if you can hook a mac up to this, why not the wii itself?
- lukeamotion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'd prefer to see video. This is an easy photoshop edit.
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3232 people so far.
- scolainsola, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Nice install, too bad the Prius is butt ugly.
