- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4OH MY SWEET JESUS!
The D3 looked fairly Canon-ish, until I saw this:
ISO 200 - 6400 [ISO 25,600 available with boost]
ISO 25,600? That'd be perfect for the astrophotography / night photography I love! - GrahamStw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Previews are available on dpreview.com with pics and detailed specs:

What kind of lens do you use? Because my experience with Nikon's digital lineup has been that the focusing works great. If you've got an older lens with a small max aperature, the body has nothing to do with it. If you've got a lens with a wide aperature and a silent wave motor, then autofocus will always be faster no matter the body.
It's the lens, not the body, that decides the AF speed. - noblepenguin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I so want a D300. I have a D200 that I love but the AF always seemed a little sluggish. Looks like they fixed it with this camera. Oh well, the 200 will have to last me a bit longer.
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How would it handle astrophotography? Noise is always more visible at the longer exposures. The D80 I have gets purple edges due to amp noise.

Now, if Nikon has improved their noise reduction, we'll be all set. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I was going to go Canon, but this new release has me second guessing. I may have to save an eternity for that AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED -- US$1699.95
- etruscan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I work for Nikon and have had to keep my trap shut about the two cameras (until today!). Let me tell you... the D3 is an amazing piece of hardware. It's a Nikon developed CMOS sensor which is virtually noiseless at 6400 ISO. At 25,600 ISO the noise is so low that it's hardly a concern. With 12 pixel pipes, it's blazingly fast, and unlike the Canon Live View, you can AF the Nikon when in Live View mode. The dual CF slots are excellent as well.
Some may complain about the 12.1 megapixel (compared to the 21.1 1DS Mark III beast) but honestly, 12.1 is more than enough for 99% of the shooting population. The D300 is also no slouch. This is the camera I've been waiting for, and will be much more in my price range. I'm excited that Nikon is finally competing in the action photo market, and it's nice to hear some complaints coming from the Canon field for a change. ;) - etruscan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You should see the noise! (or more accurately, the lack of it). When I played with the D3 yesterday, I was amazed at how well it handled noise even at those super-high ISO's.
