- dotlizard, on 03/16/2008, -0/+47well, the EEE was supposed to come out at $199, but that turned out not to be possible. i'd like to see them hit this price point, and i'd sure love to carry a Gecko around :)
- arandomgeek, on 02/24/2009, -2/+39Is it at all odd that I would feel cheap buying this instead of an Eee PC?
- Roger, on 03/16/2008, -2/+39Like the price, but I can't stand a large border around the display (like the current EeePC has).
- wcarolyn, on 03/16/2008, -2/+34How are all these entries from this blog getting on digg? There's nothing informative and it's worse than blog spam because they don't link to the original source.
Here's the original source I found:http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS7223327753.html
Mike Ewrins blog - Blog spam with no credit to original source.
Engadget/Gizmodo - Blog spam that links to original source. But now they tend to to do blog spam -> blog spam -> original source. Still, that's better than no credit at all.
Also, the blog author the same guy who whines about laptop hard drives and called the dell rugged laptop "IT Friendly" while comparing it to MBA. Those digg entries got on front page but the comments were all against the article. I'm supicious that computerworld is cheating the digg system. - Cattywampus, on 03/16/2008, -3/+23Especially if it can save you 15% or more on your car insurance. And talk with a cockney accent.
- JLWoods, on 03/16/2008, -3/+18So wait for the Eee 901, with it's 1024x600 8.9 inch screen.
- MillionsLivio, on 03/16/2008, -1/+12I love these concepts, but the bordered screens suck, huge hit to the product. Nonetheless, like the direction this is going, the market for these in the next few years will be very interesting, ultra light and cheap.
- whereisian, on 03/16/2008, -4/+12Horray for cheap laptop price wars!
I'm tossed up between the EEE 9 inch or the MSI Wind 10 inch (which is still vapour, I think). Or an XO if it ever hits the free market (just cause they are too interesting). - mason215, on 03/16/2008, -3/+9as if apple is the answer to everything
- BryanJK, on 03/16/2008, -2/+8the 9" eee pc is about $625 (or 400 euros), for that price I'd personally just buy a full class laptop :(
but then again, that is not at ALL a bad price for a sub-notebook of its kind - thestorey, on 03/16/2008, -1/+7Yess i am staring at my sister's White EEE and it's one of the few things that keeps me from getting one my self.
- edicius, on 03/16/2008, -1/+7Linux runs good on everything, if it's done properly.
- turbodiesel, on 03/16/2008, -0/+5Apples to oranges. it's not about a Linux notebook, it's about portability. The 6000 weighs twice as much, is much larger, and is 5 years old. it also takes longer to boot up.
Nothing wrong with the 6000, but not comparable against ultra portables. - iofthestorm, on 03/16/2008, -1/+6Don't convert euro prices to dollars directly, the current $399 EeePC costs like 299 euros, which is closer to $500. I'm guessing the EeePC 900 will cost around $500.
- iofthestorm, on 03/16/2008, -2/+7Yeah, I'm waiting for the Eee 900 model that does away with most of the ridiculous bezel. It's supposed to come out in April, and then the Centrino Atom (Diamondville) version will come out in May which will have similar performance despite higher clock speeds since it's in-order, but the battery life will be a bit longer with the Diamondville proc.
- inactive, on 03/16/2008, -2/+6Yep I would gladly pay an extra $100 for some more screen real estate, still makes it very affordable
- RedGreen1, on 03/16/2008, -2/+5I don't envy you. I love my little 12" thinkpad and couldn't imagine having to lug something around as big as that.
Not to mention that not even being the point of any of these small machines. - Twoje, on 03/16/2008, -1/+4That's why I'm looking forward to the Asus Eee 900.
- JigoroKano, on 03/16/2008, -1/+4I run Firefox with some extensions to give me more browsing space. I also run OpenOffice, Mathematica, and some other stuff just fine. It's EDTV resolution, which is fine for its size. I just wanted something small, cheap, and solidstate. I mostly use a PC and have no need for a giant laptop.
- Aeuta, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3 I am still going with HP if it hits a $500 or less price point...the cheaper the better...I want a laptop just to carry around to school for notes and web surfing at home I will spend another $600 to upgrade my desktop and if I get a $300 dollar laptop I will still have a Laptop+a high performance desktop with a price of less then a grand.
- colto, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3Yeah plus that thing has four cd burners! ;)
- JigoroKano, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3Asus' entry level price point is $299.99 for the 2G model.
- inactive, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3RTFA, Dude
- Adam420, on 03/16/2008, -6/+8That thing is ugly....ill keep waiting.
- bdbr, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2The people still comparing these to laptops need to see one next to a laptop...and how the average sized laptop looks enormous next to it. This is ultra-portable computing, not a laptop replacement. Think something the size and portability of a paperback book, something you might carry around even if you didn't absolutely have to.
- nicko68, on 03/16/2008, -2/+4When you buy an EEEPC, you're paying for the size. It's a lot easier to carry around a subnotebook.
- Woecip, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3We use Nohrtec puppy boxes for our products. Really nice stuff. Ill give one of these a go.
- brandondrew, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2I've used one of these (the Eee, that is, not the new one here). They're cool--it's impressive what a very small computer can do, but it's only useful as a secondary machine that you carry with you when you can't or don't want to carry a real laptop. They screen is too small for real productive use, and the keyboard is even worse, at least if you have big hands (like me).
What we really need for super-personal computing (and we'll get in the next ten or twenty years I'm sure) is a good display that can be worn like glasses, and a one-handed chording keyboard (which already exists: the twiddler from http://handykey.com , although it's a little awkward for large hands at the moment too but not impossible to use, and should be perfect for small/medium hands) and a computer that you can wear in your jacket pocket, with wireless connections to both the display and the keyboard.
(I'm sure I'll get dugg down by the Eee fanboys, since almost anyone who else who criticized these did too. I'd bet they never used one though.) - lovekudu, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2Any news on the distro?
Linux and Asuslauncher is nice on the eee, but I'm hoping the HP or this will go with something based on Ubuntu Mobile. - deMonkey, on 03/16/2008, -2/+3Totally different market. I post this every time someone says this, but here's a 15.4" vs. a 7":
http://www.tweak3d.net/forums/imagehosting/347a028 ...
People buy these things *because* of the small screen. And 7" is fine (hell, some people browse on an iPhone), but the resolution's the weak point, if you want to get technical. I don't mind mine and I'm very used to the keyboard now. :) - Tenoq, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1No, but when they do answer it's often a fresh look at the concept. E.g. iMac, iPod, iPhone, etc. You might not like them, but they're certainly a different take on your everyday products - and often are quite successful for either aesthetics or usability.
- RedGreen1, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2*well
My toaster runs linux, and it only has 28 megs of ram. - lovekudu, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2Oh, it's 'Linpus Linux Lite'
Weird distro, and such a small screen - I'll go with a nine inch eeepc or the HP. - deMonkey, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2Who would pay $300 for that when the base eeePC is the same price? Asus vs. Norhtec is like Toyota vs. Kia. Maybe if the specs match the 4G for the price of the 2G Surf, but I doubt it'll happen and this PR doesn't give a lot of info.
- Tenoq, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1Not really. I daresay a Wal-Mart special would be generic parts - therefore cheaper and easier to service.
- daverave999, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1Any chance of a link with info please? This is great news and I missed it!
- daverave999, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1It's nice to see some dry humour round here.
- inactive, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2They will probably call it the MacBook Nano and gonna charge you twice the price for half the hardware.
- shotgunefx, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1In case it's not clear, I don't mean the laptop itself, but the tiny bordered screen
- deMonkey, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1http://www.tweak3d.net/forums/imagehosting/347a028 ...
I think digg truncates the URL.
http://www.tweak3d.net/forums/tech/greetings-my-ee ... - unrealmp3, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1The form factor and design is nice, but the small screen screw it up.
- edicius, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1I didn't know they made Toast for Linux.
- gudnbluts, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2I'm using mine right now, five yards away from my 15.5" laptop. The appeal is it's ridiculously light, and a lot more comfortable to sit on your lap if you're just doing a little browsing, or a bit of typing or skyping on the sofa, in bed etc. etc. You can do pretty much anything on them you can on a normal laptop, the screen and lack of dvd drive being the limiting factors (at least for the kind of things I do).
plus it'll be great for business trips. - inactive, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2good point
broken link - qwertydvorak, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2if they are going to border a screen, at least have the border match the laptop case color so it doesn't maki it stand out even more.
- cubicledropout, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1I like the eee...it will be interesting to see what they come up with
- Jerky1312, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2This is going to be a boost for Linux, as nearly all of these computers will need it to run. It's going to introduce a lot of people to Linux, which in turn will force the distro devs to constantly make things more user friendly for the masses.
