There are new batteries based on alternative Lithium chemistries from at least two companies, Valence and a123, that do not suffer from this catastrophic failure mode. These batteries are on the market already in the newest generations of higher voltage cordless power tools from Milwaukee and DeWalt companies respectively. Lithium "bombs" are already in the process of being replaced.
