- danlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4there are already tons of wifi sip phones available. dont know if they are 802.11g but there's no need since SIP only required 12b kbit each way.
check them out at VOIPSupply.com:
http://www.voipsupply.com/index.php?cPath=270_279 - danlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2likely will not work with vonage as they do not publish their SIP settings. You will be able to use someone who does like broadvoice.com
- zipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why do you want to buy something that only works on private Wireless LAN when there are phones available which can work both on your public cellular network and Wireless LAN (for example Motorola CN620)....
- mrkoje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The IP phone uses SIP protocol, hardly new but seems to be the most popular. To use this phone you will need to have a PBX service. This can be your Asterisk server with trunks to POTS and other VOIP servers. Can also be used directly with services such as VoicePulse, Broadvoice.. and many others. Check out www.VOIP-INFO.org. Seems like a cool phone, but is hardly an innovation. SIP WiFi phones have been available for over a year. What I want to know is how much this one will be.
This phone from Linksys only supports one protocol standard (SIP) and only two voice codecs. It seemingly has half the features of the SIP wifi phones currently available. If this phone costs more then $100.00 your better off going with a different wifi phone. - cjarnesen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that seems VERY cool. now we just need nationwide wireless g coverage! Google might help us there.
- jcostom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Linksys needs a wakeup call here. We're fast approaching 2006, and this phone only supports WEP?? Not even WPA-PSK.
No digg. If they had done the proper engineering - i.e. support for WPA, I would absolutely digg. - tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If the price isn't too bad, I might get one
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think i will buy that...
- zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice looking phone...this is gonna be good... +digg
- zarlwilliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just thought it didnt support wpa2? which a firmware update would fix...
- mrkoje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not having WPA is a serious problem. Would you really want to downgrade your wifi security, which is absolutely essential, just to be able to talk on a wifi phone?
The concept is cool. The actual product leaves much to be desired.
Check out the Asterisk open source PBX http://www.asterisk.org to see what you can do (for free) with VOIP. - thewayne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks cool but why would I need this over a cell phone?
- mr804, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It'd be nice of vonage would allow you to use this type of device with your normal phone #. I think you can use it with the "soft" phone feature, but not a normal phone number. The soft phone feature is like an extra 5 bucks for 500 mins a month.
- DEEZED, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Other than this being produced by linksys, how is this news? Wifi SIP phones have been around for quite a while... No Digg.
- nugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats cool. I could see myself using one if there was more wifi around here.
- mrkoje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok.. if it just uses WEP, and someone cracks your key, they will be able to do quite a lot frankly. For one, if they get your key and can log onto the network, they could record your conversations.
Another good point, is that a person using this phone at home, with an Asterisk box or not, will probably not have a dedicated wifi network just for the VOIP. It's possible, just not feasible. So for a user that currently is using WPA to have to downgrade to WEP is a horrible sacrifice. I would NEVER do it.
Finally ukdataguy, you said "At least it uses WEP which is better then some other wireless devices" please let me know what standard encryption is WORSE then WEP? Here is the awnser: there is none. The only thing worse then WEP is absolutely no encryption.
WEP is so horribly faulted, it can be usually broken within an hour or less, and in some cases 10 minutes or less.
Take my advice, any device, this phone included, is not worth opening your network to a security risk.
Mike - marzbar329, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think I'm going to buy one.
I digg it :P - terafunker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why haven't I heard of this type of service before. And the Motorola CN620, where the hell did that come from?
- Tarek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does that mean we can make overseas and local calls without any additional costs from the ISP end or do we have to subscribe to a VOIP phone calling plan with them?
- aiakos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just got the new version called the WIP330 and it rocks! Windows CE, 14dBm transmit power, 802.11b/g and a longer battery life. I haven't figured out how to get the wpa-psk to work yet with my wrt54g but I've only had it for a couple of hours. The screen is way better than the WIP300 too, check it out:
http://www.voiplink.com/Linksys_WIP330_p/linksys-wip330.htm - stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its good lookin too!
- nebbyfoshebby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i want one that would be so cool
- wazoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ehem, good story. its early.
- SirLeNerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One more reason for me to get working on that Asterisk server for home.
- wazoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0theese phones have alot to be improved on, i used a zyxel one for a while to test it and it would drop calls and if the wifi wasnt 100% it would distort the sound. also the battery life SUCKED, im talking like it would die after 8 hours of standby and only 2 or 3 - 2 min calls. ill have to see if this linksys one is any better. the experience reminded me of cell phones 3 years ago. we shal see. good storie though +digg
- rotero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0what protocol would it use? any idea
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1you're*
- jojofreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I WANT ONE!
- alterself, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0why not link directly to what you are posting...
ukdataguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If you set up your 802.11g network with a unique SSID that is dedicated to VoIP, which is a basic WLAN config, and use WEP, and someone hacks in, what do they get? Access to your Asterisk box, which should be secured anyway.
At least it uses WEP which is better than some other wireless devices - mesoed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Does this require vontage service or the like?
- haakonn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Every time there's a digg story with exclamation marks in its title: drink.
- godsack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0A story that isn't about Apple, Google, Digg, Kevin Rose, TWiT!
