- Nathrat, on 01/18/2008, -48/+226Wow, Sony should look into making a game console one day, they might be able to make some money.
- Trention, on 01/18/2008, -28/+130If you don't already have a PS3 and there's even a slight chance you'll want to game, the PS3 is by far the best Blu-ray player out there. It's also future proof but I am not very interested in "interactivity" and marketing like that.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 01/18/2008, -44/+120This was the main reason I wanted HD-DVD to win cause they have ONE FARKING SPEC everyone with a first gen stand alone Blu-Ray player gets burned
- razor150, on 01/18/2008, -15/+70I do find it funny that anti-DRM Digg users would be happy that the most DRM ladened HD media seems to be winning. When did the world get turned on it's head?
Not that HD-DVD was much better, but it was still better. - conrail, on 01/18/2008, -16/+64This "shifting standard" ***** has got to stop. BD isn't even a mainstream format yet, and they're already throwing a good percentage of their user base overboard just to sell them another piece of overpriced electronics.
If networking is part of the BD standard, then all BD players should have had network connectivity since day one. - fudsak, on 01/18/2008, -15/+54Yes, HD-DVD may have been a better made ready-to-go format but Blu-Ray has clearly taken over as the bestselling HD media. I just read an article saying Blu-Ray outsold HD-DVD 6-to-1 last week. I don't think HD-DVD can make any sort of come back.
At this point, we shouldn't be argueing that HD-DVD was better and should havebeen picked, but instead we should be scolding Sony, or the BDA, for not planning ahead and screwing their important early adopters. They better have an upgrade/replacement program lined up for them. - Serapthi, on 01/18/2008, -5/+42You know the whole point of firmware updates is so you can update your PS3 after you buy it right?
And btw, you fail as a troll - minoss, on 01/18/2008, -17/+54It's cheaper than the xbox when you add in $100 for wireless play and $170 for HD-DVD.
- H3avyC, on 01/18/2008, -11/+46First you had to worry about buying HD-DVD or Blu-Ray and who was going to win. Now you have to worry about buying a player that is the correct profile (1.0, 1.1, and now 2.0). I continue to be amazed that a format with such confusing standards, which has already obsoleted some stand-alone players is poised to become the standard for physical high def content. If you don't really follow this stuff as a hobby, I can't imagine how hard it would be to understand. I just wonder if it's been bad enough to cause the average consumer to just forget it all together and stick with regular DVD.
- xOpifex, on 01/18/2008, -10/+42If by in a few years you mean 10, because that is the lifespan Sony wants the PS3 to have.
- reverland, on 01/18/2008, -22/+52I don't know why anyone would digg the above comment down. This is the main reason I wanted HD DVD to win. You didn't have to worry about disks not playing or not being able to play extra features. In some cases older Blue Ray players can't even play the disk. So thank you all so much for letting Blue Ray win and having to buy a $400 player so we can be sure that we can play the movies we buy.
- imants, on 01/18/2008, -8/+37Not future-proof, but rather more future-resistant.
- krische, on 01/18/2008, -7/+36Its not like the owners of the previous profiles aren't going to be able to watch the movies. They just won't be able to use some of the advanced special features the new profiles support. They can still watch the new profile movies in 1080p, which is the main reason people are buying the movie right? To watch it?
- Brad324, on 01/18/2008, -7/+31more like the console vs the movie player.
- digggggggggg, on 01/19/2008, -1/+24Kinda reminds me of the picture of this sign on Digg a while back:
"Sony's AMAZING BLU RAY PLAYER: PS3! - $599. *it also plays games" - hughesj919, on 01/18/2008, -0/+23I thought they already did lessen the cost? Its around 10 grand now right?
- badqat, on 01/18/2008, -13/+34Or perhaps Sony could come out with a dev kit to rival that of Microsoft...then, perhaps programming for the PS3 wouldn't be the issue it has been.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/18/2008, -5/+26Plus $50 a year to play online.
- dvdchris, on 01/18/2008, -11/+32Poorly titled. We have known for a week and a half, when BetaNews broke this information, that spec 2.0 makes the PS3 the most future proof player. A better title would have been "Why the PS3 is the Best Player" or "An Explanation of Blu-ray Profiles."
Bottom line: Blu-ray was rushed to market before it was ready and should never have been released until it was complete. - inactive, on 01/18/2008, -5/+25Wal-Mart just announced that they are dropping HD-DVD so looks like Blu-Ray is winning new grounds everyday
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/business/2008/01/ ... - JamesMorris, on 01/18/2008, -21/+39HD-DVD owners also got burned. GG.
- philhatesyou, on 01/18/2008, -2/+20People with older Blu Ray players are *not* getting slapped in the face. Their players will be able to do exactly what they've been doing with the original discs as well as the on the new discs, that is play movies and any static video special features. They just won't be able to do the new interactive crap that's being added. Somehow though, I doubt most people will give a ***** that they can't throw knives around on their Aliens vs Predator movie disc.
- ryan899, on 01/18/2008, -4/+22Because eventually they will be making a player for less than the PS3 and then non-gaming movie watchers will buy it?
- TheXeno, on 01/18/2008, -3/+20Neither was DVD at its outset. Nor VHS. Why think statically?
- Gir53457, on 01/18/2008, -8/+24I know plenty of people who bought it. It's two-thousand and ***** eight, there is no excuse for not including built in wifi.
- bdbr, on 01/18/2008, -1/+17It kind of sounds like the whole point was to make everyone buy a PS3.
- logicalnoise, on 01/18/2008, -2/+18while super high def displays are in development 1080p will be the highest resolution for media for a long time. HDTV doesn't even support 1080P yet there just isn't enough bandwidth.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -1/+161) Not all digg users are happy. You'll find plenty of anti-BR/anti-Sony comments (yours, for example) on all the threads that discuss this.
2) It's only a matter of time before they break all the BR DRM.
3) Higher capacity means it has more use as a storage medium for use on computers. In at least that aspect, I think it was inarguably "better." - inactive, on 01/18/2008, -0/+15Many times. For every console ever made, when 3D accelerators came out, etc etc.
- DiggzDE, on 01/18/2008, -8/+23"HD DVD players have included networking as standard since the beginning, but Blu-ray has not, and the evolving standard may become a large problem for early adopters."
Even though HD-DVD got it right first, they are still losing the "war" :( - ahhell, on 01/18/2008, -3/+18HDMI is just as ***** up.
- aegis9975, on 01/18/2008, -4/+18HD-DVD is also planning another revision. The new TL51 spec (triple-layer 51GB) was due to be phased in later this year and has already been approved by the HD-DVD board. Granted, not sure if those plans have been canceled after the Warner announcement. But the new specs would have made all previous models out of date.

http://www.dvdforum.org/40scmtg-resolution.htm - ryan899, on 01/18/2008, -0/+13There's a Samsung player with an ethernet port. At least the pic on the Best Buy website shows one.
- drysz, on 01/18/2008, -1/+14Fanboy? Sorry but I don't even own a PS3 or a Blu-Ray player. In fact my laptop has a HD-DVD player.
I just submitted the article I didn't write it! - MrMafoo, on 01/18/2008, -3/+16I'm an early adopter, I bought my BR player in 2006.... good thing it's a PS3. 9 million early adopters will not be screwed.
- selrahc, on 01/18/2008, -0/+13I think at this point most people are just happy there is a format that is winning.
- DrMonkeyLove, on 01/18/2008, -5/+18I thought a lot of players supported firmware updates to be able to go to 2.0. Am I wrong? Maybe they don't have the Ethernet connection.
- wmelnick, on 01/18/2008, -3/+16HD-DVD may have been better from that perspective, but dual layer Blu-Ray is 50GB while dual layer HD-DVD is only 30GB. Allows for a better looking picture.
It's not so much that we are glad that Blu-Ray won, it's just we are glad that someone won. If this went on for much longer everyone would have lost out. - logicalnoise, on 01/18/2008, -2/+14the lack of region coding was nice. I have a very nice japanese HD-DVD of Oldboy in my collection.
- Oronar, on 01/18/2008, -1/+13Uhm...what? What you stated would seem to be a reason TO get a PS3...
- H3avyC, on 01/18/2008, -1/+13I tend to agree. It's only a matter of time and bandwidth before something like Xbox Live Movie Rentals or the Apple TV look really attractive. I look at my large collection of DVD's and I bet over 70% of them, I've only watched once. An on-demand high def rental service with 5.1 sound, would meet almost all of my needs.
- fudsak, on 01/18/2008, -3/+14No one expects the transition from SD to HD to be seamless. DVD didn't take over VHS immediately, it took several years. Of course the market isn't large now. The undefined future format has a lot to do with that. I believe a lot of people were ready to adopt but opted out because they didn't want to get burned with the wrong format. I also believe that when one format is the clear victor, which Blu-Ray has almost claimed, the market will begin to boom.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -6/+17There's nothing holding back the PS3 from playing these audio formats. If it's encoded on the disc, it's a matter of a firmware update on the PS3 to add features. Kinda like how the PS3 just got BR profile 1.1 and DivX/XviD support recently.
- bahamutxd, on 01/18/2008, -1/+12.. and at the English language
- WaRdRivR, on 01/18/2008, -9/+20I think the Playstation 3 will probably be very successful despite looking bad so early on. I remember for the first year of Playstation 2, the biggest hit on Playstation 2 was “The Matrix”. People were watching the movie, they weren’t playing the game. Playstation 2 sparked the DVD market in Japan, DVD hadn’t caught on in Japan yet. Before Playstation 2 people would walk through commodity markets (in Japan) and there were game stores everyplace, after Playstation 2 you would walk through commodity markets and you’d see DVDs STORES, Then if you walked into these DVD stores they were demonstrating movies using Playstation 2. So, It's to Sony's advantage being a multimedia corporation, it doesn't hurt them, in fact it works to their advantage. It's not like PS3 doesn't have any good titles already but all I’m trying to say is with this type of clout it’s bound to start being considered a serious game console for game developers once more units get sold, despite sony's clearly dishonest intentions of marking as such when in fact it's an entertainment home theater.
- GOVStooge, on 01/18/2008, -4/+15required network connectivity....
there is only one reason to require a network connection on a media player. They are turning your "dvd" player into a DRM subscription service. - UnseenLlama, on 01/18/2008, -4/+15I bought a PS3 right after Warners made the announcement to go Blu and haven't looked back. Also bought the Nyko IR adapter so the PS3 integrates with my Logitech Harmony remote. It's sad, but the article is 100% correct. The PS3 is the most future-proof Blu-Ray player out there. Trust me, if there was a better stand alone player, I would have bought it. Maybe in a couple of years when prices go down.
- superkendall, on 01/18/2008, -1/+12Why do you even need networking anyway? It's a MOVIE PLAYER. The movie is ON THE DISC. Not being able to visit a movie-themed online shopping mall is hardly "throwing the user base overboard"!!!.
1.1, now that includes PIP and seems like it might help offer features people would actually use. But a number of new players do support that profile. - Serapthi, on 01/18/2008, -6/+17More of a Linux PC than Windows or Mac
- imants, on 01/18/2008, -6/+16Right. And wait a few years for bandwidth + on demand streaming offerings to make any physical media (including blu-ray) obsolete
