- alex7575, on 11/29/2008, -1/+22What's a nootbook? Is it for connecting to the internoot?
- abbathdoom, on 11/29/2008, -0/+19My desktop computer is like 5 or 6 years old and does everything I want from a computer. These netbooks are probably faster than my desktop, so why wouldn't they be up to the task?
The only thing (besides gaming) a netbook can't do is play HD video. But on screens that small why does it matter?
I personally really like the idea of taking a netbook on the road with me and then plugging it into a larger display and proper keyboard and mouse when I get home. - MCA2142, on 11/29/2008, -0/+18Netbooks as awesome as a secondary machine for mobile users. But as a primary machine, they are obviously sub-par on many tasks.
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -6/+23A netbook makes a poor main computer. Its not built for media encoding or gaming. I have an asus aspire, while its good, I would never surrender my desktop.
- Shenaniganz08, on 11/29/2008, -0/+12That article was retarded, they tried running Crysis on a netbook... are you freaking kidding me ?
============================================================
I went from a high-end premium Vaio SZ with all the trimmings ( It was the carbon fiber LED version) . I paid well over $2000 for it a year and a half ago.
The screen accidentally cracked from a fall, and the repair would have cost somewhere between 600-$1000 dollars
I purchased a MSI wind with a 6 cell battery, and added a 1gb stick of ram. Simply put this netbook can do 98% of the things my old laptop could do, but at a fraction of the cost !
The only downfall is the 600 pixel height. If it was 768 it would be perfect !
Next Mod will be a $100 touchscreen :) - sorenchr, on 11/29/2008, -2/+12How about just calling it a ***** laptop
- franciscofelipe, on 11/29/2008, -0/+10two sentences?
- Trax91, on 11/29/2008, -4/+13Shut up.
- PedleZelnip, on 11/29/2008, -1/+10Does anyone actually consider a netbook a replacement for a main desktop machine? I really want a netbook, but that's simply for the portability -- as an instructor I do PowerPoint presentations, and it's much nicer carrying around a 2lb netbook than a 6lb notebook. The fact netbooks are cheaper doesn't hurt either, but in any case I'd still have a desktop machine that would complement the netbook.
I know this is hard to understand for the digg tech-heads, but irregardless of performance, netbooks can be the better choice for some people who absolutely need the portability. Not everyone needs to play games or encode HD video on their PC's. - steviesteveo, on 11/29/2008, -0/+9You're right - they're not good for media encoding or gaming but if 1) all your gaming and movie watching needs are served by a console and big-ass TV, 2) you download all your music in mp3 online and 3) you only need a computer to use instant messenging, web browsing and social networks, with maybe the very rare bit of word processing then, yes, a netbook will do you absolutely fine.
People like that exist, maybe not on digg, but they do and they'd love a cheap, light and portable notebook computer they can keep in a bag and maybe only charge every couple of days like their cell phone. - stutimandal, on 11/29/2008, -1/+9Ans: Depends on what your needs are and how much your pocket allows.
- zombo, on 11/29/2008, -0/+7and for your $1800 dollars you get to look a right ponce too.
- newdigger, on 11/29/2008, -0/+6Asus doesn't make the Aspire, Acer does.
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -0/+5Who the ***** is thinking about surrender their desktop for a netbook? Not even a normal laptop can make most people surrender their desktops.
- Sentiax, on 11/29/2008, -0/+5I didn't see overpricedpretentiousjerkbooks in the title.
- volcompimp, on 11/29/2008, -1/+5I love my netbook. Great excuse to run a Linux only machine.
Running an eeepc 701 w/ Arch Linux - alex7575, on 11/29/2008, -0/+4That reply button does get tricky...
- valkyries, on 11/29/2008, -2/+6thats interesting that asus makes a netbook called aspire, because acer make a netbook called the aspire one.
- DigSomeMore, on 11/28/2008, -2/+6Netbooks are great for travel to check email and social media...would never surrender my desktop either
- NixiePixel, on 11/29/2008, -0/+4Good article, it helps for someone who hasn't researched laptop trends recently. If netbooks would come down a bit in price I think they can gain a lot more traction. Laptop prices (except for Macs) have dropped significantly.
- CoreyTamas, on 11/29/2008, -0/+4Now compare the price and see which one is more appealing.
- alex7575, on 11/29/2008, -1/+5If you make stupid comments on digg, you're in the right place.
See? Makes more sense that way. - orph3us, on 11/29/2008, -0/+4why shouldn't they?
- ferrell, on 11/29/2008, -1/+5Keep in mind that you can get a nice used Thinkpad x41 (or even a T43) which is much more of a computer than any existing netbook for less then the cost of a new netbook.
- igibson, on 11/29/2008, -0/+4I have an Asus EEE 1000H as my primary computer and i absolutely love it. The only problems i have had is with running high end games, but other than that it runs any program i throw at it perfectly fine. From itunes to word processing to basic web design to photoshop to oldschool gaming sessions, it runs perfectly. I even have enough power to play CNC generals, COD 1, Warcraft 3, and other games. Easily the best purchase I made for $500, and a no-brainer for travel. You never realize how little processing power you need until you downgrade and find no problems.
- PedleZelnip, on 11/29/2008, -0/+3Reading the article a bit more, it's rather misleading. FTA:
"At a time when some laptops are starting to rival desktop machines in terms of gaming performance, the current crop of netbooks fall woefully short when it comes to gaming prowess. The latest laptops come with dedicated graphics chips that help them produce stunning frame rates and amazing graphics in the latest and most demanding games. "
Yeah you can find laptops that have decent GPU's to play games. They fail to mention though that the price nearly doubles (or triples) between the more gaming-oriented Dell XPS's and "just want to run office" laptops. You can find an average laptop for $500, but if you want to do any kind of gaming on it, you're likely going to be paying well over $1K.
I have a buddy who has an Acer Aspire and he had no problem running Return to Castle Wolfenstein on it, which while not Crysis, is still fairly impressive for a sub $400 netbook. - hiralovegmail, on 11/29/2008, -0/+3at home i have 2 Notebooks, 1 Netbook and 2 Desktop ... Netbook is the future as these are smaller and one of the best thing when you are out/away from home .. i like it very much
- Wormwoods, on 11/29/2008, -4/+7If you make stupid comments on digg, you're stupid.
- igibson, on 11/29/2008, -0/+3and at what size? my asus was small enough to take halfway across the world with enough room left over for books, clothes, and other belongings. when it comes to laptop portability, you just can't get better than a netbook
- smacksaw, on 11/29/2008, -1/+4It depends what you do. One of my kids is playing Runescape right now and it's jerky as hell. However MAME and the other emulators work pretty well. It's all about accepting the limitations.
I mean, you could have some 17" behemoth notebook as your sole computer, but try bringing that around with you. You've gotta accept that limitation.
Personally, I love 'em. But the real question is "should a $300 dollar computer be your only computer?" If it's a desktop, it's not gonna do any of those things in the article as well as a $1300 PC. - KibibyteBrain, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2Totally true. I have a year-newer notebook with a faster rated processor and such than my desktop, but my desktop is still snappier for most applications because of features like a faster HDD with more cache, RAID, overclockability, a decent GPU, solid gigabit link to my LAN, ability to run system optimizing tasks in the background 24/7, and other features that you really can't get in a notebook unless its some sort of frankenstein machine.
- steviesteveo, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2Agreed, it's something that should be recommnded for anyone who uses a computer, in my opinion. It's weird how effective two screens are when you get used to them. And the dinky little keyboards on netbooks are built for cost and size - so plug in a better one whenever you can.
Good advice, abbathdoom - inactive, on 11/29/2008, -1/+3The questions are always answered best by this question: what are you going to use it for and what is your budget?
- valkyries, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2as long as you dont do gaming a netbook is perfect for the casual pc user
- Evi1d33d, on 11/29/2008, -1/+3Netbook for encoding (O.o)? Even a Pentium can do a better job than an Atom in terms of raw power.
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2I think netbooks have their place. I know my fiance who got a Dell D520 for college, but it was a little too big and too heavy still to be lugged around everywhere along with 30lb worth of books on top. And it wasnt like she ever did more than use the Internet and make a Word file or two, netbooks have more than enough power for that.
Powerful enough for full sized apps, light and portible, and fairly cheap. They cross that line of a very enhanced phone and a full sized laptop. - zombo, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2Good luck with your bag of components.
- sanderton, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2Some are from magazines, some are specially commissioned, some are by TechRadar staffers.
- steviesteveo, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2And the price of a gold brick.
- ch40sBr1ng3r, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2Why 4 pages? :(
- sanderton, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2TechRadar has never paid anyone for any submission to Digg or in any way for any promotion related to Digg.
You have no idea what you are talking about. - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2I meant the aspire one. oops.
- steviesteveo, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2That's actually the very best advice I've ever seen in these things - most commentators are far too biased when they start answering the question.
- Zarxrax, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2I just picked up an eeepc 900ha for about $250 and I'm loving it. It's obvious to anyone with a brain that you can't play crysis on these things, but if you aren't a complete moron and know how to optimize your system for performance, you can get some nice stuff out of this thing. I can play 720p video files, play games that aren't too demanding like Touhou, starcraft, and unreal tournament. Heck, I've even got photoshop loaded on this thing, along with older versions of Premiere and After Effects for video editing on the go. Performance is actually quite acceptable. And the thing boots in about 30 seconds for me.
- talonh, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2You should use kleenex instead of your macbook for that.
- hooah212002, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1we call those "rich people"
- rowlodge, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1i wouldn't buy a too expensive one like i did ,i couldn't afford a pc until i sold my notebook a few years later, i was stuck with something i couldn't upgrade for a long time.
- jaymulder, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1I laugh at your grammar!
- steviesteveo, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1Quoted for use of common sense.

What is Digg?
