- KMartSheriff, on 07/04/2008, -2/+17What "issues"?
- jordn, on 07/03/2008, -6/+20looks like AMD/ATI could possibly regain the lead, especially with their upcoming 4870 X2 slated for August:

I don't want my mom in my computer. - inactive, on 07/04/2008, -2/+12Now is a really good time to buy NVDA stock. 2 year low record today. It was about 25.00 5 years ago and stayed around there until this year.
- santaliqueur, on 07/04/2008, -0/+10Apple's motherboards are called logic boards. It comes from way back, when there were separate logic and analog boards. The name "logic board" stuck, as the name for motherboard.
- effer, on 07/04/2008, -1/+10well ATI had the Xbox360...
- somestranger26, on 07/04/2008, -0/+9Why do people call motherboards "logic boards"?
- h4mx0r, on 07/04/2008, -0/+8my 8600M GT is still gunning for me, so I hope I'm not part of this "significant" number.
- KMartSheriff, on 07/04/2008, -3/+9I'm getting dugg down for asking what issues you have? You just simply said "all the issues". A nice blanket statement. What kinds of issues?
- redxii, on 07/04/2008, -0/+6I have a HP dv6258se which has a nVidia GeForce Go 6150, and it was one hot laptop--and I don't mean it sold like hotcakes. The GPU *idled* at 88~90C, the CPU was almost 60C, and the hard drive 50~55C. Everything got warmed up and nothing to cool it down or push the heat away. What they did was release a BIOS update (F.3D) that keeps the fan on at low power, and as usual higher depending on demand. Previously the fan would only come on when the CPU was under high load then turn back off, regardless if the temperature was insanely high.
Currently, w/ the new BIOS:
GPU: 68C
CPU: 32C for Core #1, 40C for Core #2 (read by Core Temp)
HD: 47C - veeshy, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5My 7900 died while playing bioshock, had to drop $200 to fix it
- PhonicUK, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5I'd love to see a little more from AMD/ATI, and soon. If only to drive prices down.
- LittleGerms, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5My dell XPS mobo had to be changed TWICE.
- Borgcube636, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4Damn. I guess I'm lucky that my 8600M is still going strong? Or so it seems....
- digiguy, on 07/04/2008, -3/+7Quality control is going to hell these days
- shahrum, on 07/03/2008, -7/+11That explains all the issues with my MacBook Pro...
- xelloss, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4My 8600 GT works fine, however I put a cd case on the back to lift the laptop up when I game so the fans get more airflow.
- samyoungguitar, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4Did you read their fix? They're releasing new drivers to trigger system fans sooner.
- ejde, on 07/04/2008, -1/+4Wait, how is this a compelling argument to buy the stock? It stagnates for 5 years and then goes down... Sounds like a winner to me.
- samyoungguitar, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3Anyone know which chips exactly? Could a class action evolve?
- benologist, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3And what, there wouldn't have been bugs if the drivers were opensource? Or the bugs would have been fixed if they were opensource? Doesn't really make a whole lot of difference either way. The driver solution is a workaround to what sounds like a design flaw anyway.
Yahoo (the source of engadgets' story) said:
"Nvidia hasn't determined the exact cause of the problem but said it relates to a packaging material used with some of its chips, as well as the thermal design of some laptops. Modern processors generate considerable amounts of heat." - benologist, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3Disallowing open source drivers is a decision that affects almost nobody. These faulty GPUs potentially affect anyone who brought a laptop with nvidia graphics in the last year or two.
- zoomtechtv, on 07/04/2008, -2/+4Hello ATI
- widgetmaker, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Glad I'm not the only one to do this, know of any other tricks to help the cooling?
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2DV9000s are affected. DV6000s are affected.
My dv9000 died after 8 months (out of warranty too.) It was definitely a GPU error. - sedo1800, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3Ya i have had problems with my MBP twice both times the GPU failed. But the new logic board seems to be holding.
- Ryosen, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2We applaud your courage to participate in a topic of which you clearly have no understanding. It is this spirit of adventure and dedication to self-improvement that serves as a shining beacon of hope to all of us in these dark times. I salute you, sir!
- overshoot, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2HP Pavillion dv6364 owner here. Graphics is Nvidia 7200Go.
My laptop have (had?) the same problems as yours, except mine actually died about 6 months after I got it and HP had to replace the motherboard and update the BIOS.
Before it died, the computer got ridiculously hot and there would be graphics glitches on occasion. I'm not a gamer, or else I'm sure it would have happened much sooner.
I bought the extended warranty so I'm good for another year, but my laptop-model is one that HP has offered to repair if this happens again. Maybe yours is too. - strategy, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2canned air might work. my laptop is a poorly designed toshiba that needs a blast every two months or so to get rid of dust buildup.
- noheadhorseman, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2old... their stock fell like 30% ($5+ it also fell the day of their announcement around 50 cents).
- Niz1, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Couldn't they just have replaced the ones that becomes defective on the sly i mean its not like were getting reports around the worlds of overheating graphics cards, or are we? Since now they made this public everyone is thinking they've got an dodgy card and they're thinking damn my defective graphics card when they're trying to play (whatever that high graphic intensive game) is.
Im not in support of Nvidia just seems like the smart if dishonest thing to do, - wTheOnew, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Now is a good time to buy AMD stock, it's close to a 2 year low.
- Specht1988, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I believe it is the nVidia GeForce 8400M, GeForce 8400M GS, GeForce 8600M that are affected. Dell just released a driver update for these models. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download ...
- Trixrox, on 07/04/2008, -2/+3Urgh, I believe it, my 8600M GT failed in a few weeks after I got my notebook.
- pnunn, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1at least a geek poet knows what the ***** they are talking about.
- guillo98, on 07/03/2008, -3/+4I have notice a dramatic drop in performance in my Mac Book Pro too.
- mrsteveman1, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2I wasn't talking about this issue. If you read what i said, I pointed out "Nvidia has put out some terrible drivers in the past on every platform."
And because of their closed nature, no one can fix them even though tons of people would do it for the company, for free. - wTheOnew, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Unfortunately it's all of the chips, so it's not a matter of if it's a matter of when.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 07/04/2008, -0/+17600 Go is working fine. Overclocked, even.
- pnunn, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1me too
- dmr0240, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1My 7900 GS is dead at the moment. I have it the card itself turned off through device manager (which allows my laptop to run without instantly blue-screening on bootup) but I still have these weird patterns of dots overlayed on my screen. Apparently even when the device is disabled it still runs the final screen image through it before displaying it, hence the weird patterns due to some bad video memory.
Sucks not only that I can't play games, but also that it's limiting me to a non widescreen resolution which stretches the picture. Luckily I'll get it replaced for free without having to ship my computer when I get back to school in August. (I have a Dell E1705 btw). - itsthemechanic, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Balls, I have a 8800M GTX and it rocks my socks and doesn't get over 80C under load. It better though, it cost an insane amount of money, about 2x as much as the desktop card. I expect decent quality kit for that kind of price.
- iluvhatemail, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I have a 7600. Died once already.
- solid12345, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1His Macbook Pro keeps threatening to overheat itself once and for all.
- Ace2016, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0The hp dv9000 and dv6000 ranges are massive, what is the exact product number and gpu you have?
- Rufunki, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1Great I have a DV9710 w/ 7600go, and if I let it go without a laptop cooler, it will get really hot, pretty fast. But no problems yet. I also heard of a issue with the DV9700's that the case seperates from the heat. I guess this is my last hp laptop, would explain the good price I got.
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2And you are still assuming those problems in the past were driver issues...
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0Wow...you are a true geek poet.
- LansingSterling, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1yup look at the food industry with e.coli and salmonella recalls about once a week now.
- thealsir, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0The thing is their quarterly profit took a hit because of this. That's why it's news.
