- daivos, on 02/21/2008, -5/+93Is this better than my VooDoo 2?
- kingmanic, on 02/21/2008, -7/+91Some cellphones are better then your VooDoo 2.
- zinnternet, on 02/21/2008, -30/+87FYI: [H]ardOCP is the best site around because they actually examine how these products perform in games, rather than running a bunch of canned synthetic benchmarks which don't always translate over to real-world gaming performance.
- DeathRay2K, on 02/21/2008, -16/+59So do all review sites...
Personally, I prefer Tom's. - frgmstr, on 02/21/2008, -0/+40That one 512MB MSI 8800 GT with the custom cooler on it for $199.99 is a hella deal at the Egg. I have a feeling the 9600 will have to come down soon in order to differentiate the product lines. No strata in the strata right now. :O
- DaManDOH, on 02/21/2008, -1/+35Dugg up in support of a fellow word fetishist.
- TheYipster, on 02/21/2008, -0/+32Not necessarily. There are two generations of 8800 GTS cards. If his GTS has 320 or 640 megs of RAM, then yes, he walked out with weaker card. However, the GTS with 512 megs of RAM is built off the same G92 process as the GT, and is a good bit more powerful than the former 8800 GTS cards or the GTs. If he walked out with a GTS 512, then he did rather well.
- AceGoober, on 02/21/2008, -3/+28Thanks for the review [H]! As soon as the price comes down to around $169 then this will be a worthy upgrade to recommend to customers. Until then, the 8800 GT is a better value for the money.
- Elissar, on 02/21/2008, -0/+25Yes, but if you just get the VooDoo 4 like I have, you'll be good for years to come.
- DeathRay2K, on 02/21/2008, -1/+24It was the 512MB model, so its more powerful than the 8800GT.
- daivos, on 02/21/2008, -2/+25Was it benched against Zork?
- legoalert33, on 02/21/2008, -0/+22I wonder how many fake auctions for ATI 9600 there will be on ebay.
- DeathJux, on 02/21/2008, -0/+20As if model naming conventions weren't confusing enough, now Nvidia goes and names a card the same thing as ATI's old 9600 series? I had a 9600XT as recently as ~two years ago... and you can still use 'em to play Half-Life 2.
- mrelusive, on 02/21/2008, -0/+18Wow... first PC-related article on digg in a while where not a single console fanboi exaggerated video card prices.
- inactive, on 02/21/2008, -11/+28The 8800GT is more powerful than the 8800GTS. They robbed you! They gave you a worse card, not a better one.
- RevJonathan, on 02/21/2008, -1/+18It's sitting at 179.99 on NewEgg right now... that's just 10 bucks off, what am I missing here?
- mahoneyxp, on 02/21/2008, -0/+15"I would upgrade to a Rendition Vérité. I don't see that company going away anytime soon."
-Me in 1996... - crossmr, on 02/21/2008, -2/+15do people still say hella?
- zinnternet, on 02/21/2008, -4/+16Toms, and most of the other sites out there, they just run benchmarks and timedemos that focus on average frames per second without giving you an idea of how playable a given video card in is a certain game. HardOCP had a recent article that showed that there is often considerable discrepency between the framerates in these timedemo benchmarks and during actual gameplay, so this isn't always a good idea to get an idea of the card's relative performance. Case in point, the 3870 X2 was FASTER in timedemos but SLOWER than the 8800 GTX in actual gameplay. All of the review sites like Toms and Anandtech showed it as the faster card, when in fact the gameplay experience was less.
HardOCP takes the time to actually play through the games on the cards and examine what quality settings they can use to have an enjoyable performance during gameplay. They provide detailed graphs of framerates showing min, max and average frames per second over time, and they really go into detail about how the games performed on each card, rather than just having 16 pages of graphs.
Toms Hardware often doesn't even list what quality settings they're running their benchmarks at, so how can you really get an idea of how well a card performs that way?
You should read the recent HardOCP article "Benchmarking the Benchmarks" for more information on why their testing methodology really is the best. They didn't just pull it out of their ass! It's the result of years of careful consideration and self examination. Here's the link:
http://hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTQ2MSwsLGhlbn ... - huggybarrel, on 02/21/2008, -1/+13ohman, i was thinking the same thing there, bryan986
- palehorse864, on 02/21/2008, -4/+16Am I the only one who has trouble quantifying HardOCP's results? It's not bad when they max the settings out for both cards due to an older game and benchmark it, but typically they go based on "Highest playable settings" which means they lower settings for each card to what they feel comfortable with. Notice that on the crysis test, the cards have different graphics settings which are going to make them run at different speeds. It's hard to actually get a good idea of which is faster unless you can find something where they used the same settings for all. Judging from the UT3 benchmark, it appears that the 9600gt is a fast card, but the 8800gt is still slightly faster overall.
- Dl1cool, on 02/21/2008, -0/+12They also cheat sometimes and don't render, things that games would in order to get higher points.
- fuzed, on 02/21/2008, -0/+11That was a really good review. Not too techy at all. I'm glad to see NVidia spending a lot more time working on good quality cards in the 'reasonable' price range ($400+ is NOT reasonable). Also, its good to see these kinds of articles on Digg's homepage. I'm getting sooo tired of anything thats got to do with Ron Paul, HD/DVD vs. BlueRay, and the iPhone.
- ferrariman60, on 02/21/2008, -1/+12Wow, surprising performance for essentially half the streams as are on an 8800GT. I love mine, and the AA that the 8800 can do makes it worth it for me compared to the 9600. Still, great performance at an aggressive price point- I like it.
- Uchikoma, on 02/21/2008, -1/+11DirectX 10 isn't a selling point. Not at this time anyways. The incremental upgrade to 10.1? Even less so.
I'm more interested in the competition between ATI and Nvidia though. ATI's apparently slashed their prices putting the 3870 in the upper bracket range of how much the 9600 GT will cost. So it's getting interesting. - leerayIG88, on 02/21/2008, -0/+10If i had money I would buy....*sigh*
- Vindicoth, on 02/21/2008, -0/+10Whats great about this is that within 24 hours of the release of the 9600, ATI announced price cuts across the board for the 3850 and the 3870. The 3870 has an MSRP of 189.99 now i'm pretty sure. check it at at tomshardware.com
- Zalyster, on 02/22/2008, -1/+11Like a 9800?
- ibis, on 02/21/2008, -1/+11Look at the actual graph for UT3. The 8800GT is pegged at 62fps for huge portions of the test, while the 9600gt is down in the mid 40's, a figure the 8800GT never drops below. The 8 is miles faster, but it's pretty tough to tell due to the stupid way Hard does their results "best playable config" my arse.
- KMartSheriff, on 02/21/2008, -1/+10***** they must mean business then.
- Psythik, on 02/21/2008, -0/+9So confusing. I dunno why they just couldn't call the new GTS a GTS2 or something like that...
- joshhan, on 02/21/2008, -1/+10~$10.99?
- scarz99, on 02/21/2008, -1/+10Sweet nows I can haves a AMD Phenom 9600 AND a GeForce 9600!!
- inactive, on 02/21/2008, -1/+9DO WANT!
- xaxxon, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8It's difficult, but if you're actually BUYING, it's worth your time. If you're just looking to keep up on general trends, it takes a bit more time and can be frustrating. If you want to know how the card is going to perform while PLAYING THE GAME, you have to do more work (to benchmark and read the benchmarks). Also, they do a good job of summarizing it if you don't want to spend the time
- kgorczyn, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8Eh? Then it should be faster than a 8800GT (512MB Version) then shouldn't it? It has less streams too... I don't see how the two are similar....
- DaManDOH, on 02/21/2008, -2/+9DX10 -> Vista. Vista -> headache. Therefore, DX10 -> headache and I don't play video games to get a headache.
That's not to say I never get 'em from video games! Hours of "Super Mario Galaxy" really encourages eye strain... - Psythik, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7Wonderful! Now when are the higher-end GeForce 9 cards coming out?
- megabytehl, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7This is the first [H] article I've seen since the great [H] rebellion. Welcome back.
- DeathRay2K, on 02/21/2008, -1/+8You realise that ATI also had 7x00 and 8x00 series as well, this is nothing new.
- icexe, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7ahhhh, the good old Voodoo 2's!! I remember being DA MAN when I built my PII-333 around a pair of V2's, and a Matrox Millenium II on an Abit BX6 w/ 64MB SDRAM. That combo was the ***** back in the day.
I remember playing Interstate '76 and Q2 on it for hours (at an unheard of 800x600 with everything maxed out) and could not get enough of the awesome graphics and framerates. That's when i realized that PC gaming was about to change forever. - mizzack, on 02/21/2008, -1/+8Yeah, I just picked up one of those yesterday. The funny thing is that I KNEW within 24 hours of buying parts, that nVidia/Intel/Asus would release a new product. Bastards... GET OUT OF MY HEAD! On another note, I'm curious to see how the 9800 series performs (and if my neighbors are going to have to call the cops upon hearing an unintelligible string of swearing coming from my house.)
- Etchii, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6You should check out my 2 voodoo2s in uber new SLI mode!!
Does anyone remember the 3d police-helicopter game that came bundled with the card? I cant remember it for the life of me... - antdude, on 02/22/2008, -1/+7But MIRs suck.
- Guire, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6It's the newer GTS's that came out in January wich are pretty good!
- arcooke, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6Why are you *****!ing? The 8800 GT is just as good if not better. On most of the comparisons, AA or shaders were set higher on the 8800 GT than the 9600GT and only performed a couple FPS worse.. if they would have used the identical settings for all cards, the 8800GT would have been the top pick. It irritates me why they do that.
They also said in the review that the 8800 out performed the 9600 on crysis. Don't worry, you didn't make a bad purchase. - lpmiller, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6Why is "winner" in all caps in the title? Is it shocking that nvidia can make a decent videocard? It just ends up looking like bias towards the product, which seems silly. It's a videocard, not the messiah.
- Samovar, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6Zork II
- obxjdt, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6I need a new GFX card so bad!! Heck, I need a whole new system..... Still running on;
cpu= AMD XP2600 (clocked @ 2000MHz
gfx= Nvidia MX-4000
1.5 gig DDR (1)
250 gig hard drive.
10/100 fast ethernet
System works great, and is plenty fast, just not good with newer games. UT2004 is the newest game I own.... -
