- juzsp, on 01/15/2009, -8/+57Well we know it will run Crysis..... But will it blend?
- Topher06, on 01/15/2009, -3/+40I am about 4 generations behind now on GPU's, and I still don't give a damn.
- RiouG, on 01/16/2009, -6/+42I am using a GeForce go5650 with 64mb...
Some diggs would cheer me up, anyone? :( - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -5/+35Awesome card, but complete overkill. My 8800GTX still runs all the latest games just fine. There are only a couple that need me to kick in SLI to get the eye candy with good fps.
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -0/+15So who will buy it for me ?

- 1Bad, on 01/16/2009, -4/+18I have seen no significant boost in graphics cards since the 8800GTX., just a bunch of incremental improvements. I feel the 8800 is similar to the 9800 and 6600 in terms of longevity. I am still waiting for the next big leap in processing capabilities.
- inactive, on 01/16/2009, -1/+14Does it support boob physics?

You must be on the latest Apple computer. :o) - bigp3rm, on 01/16/2009, -0/+12I picked up the the EVGA GTX 260 for $200 on black friday.
Looks like it's still up for a good price at $255 with rebate.

Love the card btw. - gumballer, on 01/16/2009, -0/+11behind? I'm 2 generations ahead
- cquinnd, on 01/16/2009, -0/+10Only Flawless Victory.
- FDisk, on 01/16/2009, -4/+14No such thing as overkill in games.
- megamod, on 01/16/2009, -3/+12That gpu is never gonna give you up,
never gonna let you down
You wouldnt get this from any other gpu - pr1zm, on 01/16/2009, -0/+9For an entire system, not just the card. Why don't you take an ammeter to your computer right now?
- numberneal, on 01/15/2009, -3/+11makes me want to load up an rpg; and i haven't picked up a controller since i beat legend of zelda on nes.
- Sp0rAdiC, on 01/16/2009, -2/+9And how small is your monitor?
- nonymous666, on 01/16/2009, -0/+7So does this 285 card.
- murk, on 01/16/2009, -1/+7whats the point of spending so much extra money on getting the 285 over the 280...
its only 5 faster. - Gerz1219, on 01/16/2009, -1/+7When you buy a 2560x1600 panel, you're committing to an addiction to $500 graphics cards every six months to a year. It's a narrow enthusiast market. Anyone with a regular 1080p display can usually get two years of mileage out of a $250-300 graphics card if they buy at the right time.
- antistupid, on 01/16/2009, -1/+7Incorrect, please change your name to TheCoolestFratboygamer.
- houndeyex, on 01/16/2009, -0/+5It's just trying to tell you how it's feeling
- mason092, on 01/16/2009, -0/+5Just because a new top of the line graphics card comes out, it doesn't render all the other older ones that were awesome before useless. And my 4850 which plays everything perfectly was $138. You can't compare your 360 to a top of the line GPU.
And yes, tons of people will buy this even if they already have a GTX280. I don't know why, but they will. - Xebozone, on 01/16/2009, -0/+5i dunno whether to digg that comment or bury it
- ortucis, on 01/16/2009, -0/+5I think you need to star wearing pants around your card if the laughing doesn't stop soon.
- ortucis, on 01/16/2009, -0/+5Haha, almost every high end/mid-range card after 8 series is a 2 power connector whore.
- opmike, on 01/16/2009, -0/+5From the article:
"Please keep in mind that we were testing total system power consumption at the outlet here,..." - bradhunt5, on 01/16/2009, -0/+5Just buy a GTX280, don't waste your cash yet
- pr1zm, on 01/16/2009, -0/+5I have an 8800gts, and I think I'm going to upgrade to a gtx280. I've only had this 8800gts for a year and a half and they don't even sell it anymore. This saddens me.
- noboot, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4Anandtech seems to indicate that the 4870 1GB and maybe the 4870 x2 (but they claim they have platform issues with i7 and x64 Vista) is a better deal.
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3501 - Gerz1219, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4It's definitely a better deal for the money if you just want playable framerates on a 1080p display at a reasonable price. At that resolution, the 4870 offers great performance for the current generation of games, including Crysis (with a few settings dialed down). I don't think we're going to see a Crysis killer anytime in the next year, given that Crysis still brings the ultra high-end to its knees at higher resolutions. The game was too far ahead of the technological curve, paid the price in low sales, and no other developers are going to try to top it until the hardware catches up. We won't have a worthwhile $250 mid-range part for a Crysis killer until late 2010, which means the 4870 should play everything that comes out until then.
- midbc, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4hope you have the mobo and psu to use it
- ethana2, on 01/16/2009, -2/+6BlenderRender is CPU-based right now, but perhaps sometime in the future it'll get an OCL port. --although nVidia does have their own gpu based renderer that you can pass files to from blender, so yes, I'd say basically, that it can blend.
- RiouG, on 01/16/2009, -1/+5Just 5 or 6? I am 7 or 8 gens behind.
- chaos386, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4Pfft. Amateurs! I'm using Intel integrated!
- insertAliasHere, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4I am neither a trust fund baby or a spoiled teen (i grew up on a farm), and I bought a GTX 280 last year. I think I count as a real person. Maybe the average person doesn't buy one of these, but those of us that are computer gaming enthusiasts will.
And as for "outdated" that's not really valid. Outdated in the sense that, yes, there is something newer available, yes. But since the differences aren't all that significant, it's not a problem. I'll be able to play games with this setup for years, and I can upgrade different components whenever I want. And later, I can add another 280 when they get cheap for an easy boost in performance. - specialK16, on 01/16/2009, -1/+5Just 4? I am 5 or 6 gens behind.
- ShannonGB, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4I'm using an intel x1300, are you happy now?
- TwwIX, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4Just get a GTX 260 Core 216 and overclock it a bit. It performs as well as any of these cards and it's much cheaper.
- nonymous666, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4I still have a 8800gtx myself and while it's still doing very well, it does struggle with a few games. (i have a 1920x1200 monitor, btw.)
It runs Fallout3 out of the box just fine, but start adding in the hi-rez texture packs and it starts to bog down considerably when outdoors. Enabling AA in many newer games can make it struggle, too. Definitely not a card for running Crysis at Very High settings and a 1920x1200 :(.
But, yeah, I've had *zero* problems on some newer games like FarCry2, Deep Space, etc. Buttery smooth.
I think one of the things that's helped with its longitevity (that looks spelled wrong) is that many recent games are still based on older game engines, primarily the Unreal 3 engine which seems to be used in two thirds of games anymore. Yeah, the engines are tweaked/enhanced over time, but so are the drivers, and underneath the engine is still mostly the same, so in the end the card is able to keep up. - ElectricKetchup, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3If only Hybrid SLI worked in Linux...
- ethana2, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3Passively cooled GeForce 2 MX in a machine I just sold the other day.
It actually does run Compiz smoothly, that surprised me a lot. - Blandyman, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3Just trying to make you understand.
- LongShlong, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3I will. Do you have Paypal?
- TheCoolestNerd, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3just wondering, if you turned down your monitor brightness and were just in windows doing some homework or MS word or firefox or whatever, hows the battery life then?
- MiDri, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3Spend the extra cash on just a bad ass laptop, get a Sager N9262 (mine ran me about 2k about 6 months ago)
Mine has a quad core E6600 (I opted for quad over the 3ghz duel core.)
1 9800GT 512mb (the laptop supports SLI, as well as the GTX (which is standard now))
4 gigs of ram
2 sata hard drives (supports up to 3)
17' Monitor
SURE I only get 30-45 minutes of battery life, but I look sooo coool in that time span. Was playing L4D on the airplane back from Seattle the other day. - Biznarie, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3I got the same card, I have yet to find a game besides crysis it cant run perfectly.
- BobScratchit, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3I built a CPU with my bare hands. Sometimes my hands had screwdrivers in them though. I found out later though that just wring code on a piece of paper got the point across faster 01000100100100010.
/got nothing - inactive, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3daaaayum - that's an amazing upgrade, right there
