- evan17, on 10/17/2008, -0/+34Yay, integrated graphics that don't entirely suck.
- radu79, on 10/16/2008, -3/+32I think Intel should actually take the 3D acceleration more seriously, because it is not only for gamers. Many programs nowdays need (or can use) 3D capabilities, and I don't mean just drawing triangles with 2 textures.
While I don't like Apple at all, I think it was a good move, and I hope others will stop using the crappy Intel chisepts and switch to Nvidia. - Garmonbozzia, on 10/17/2008, -0/+22I spilled beans on my lap one time. That was a mess! I can't imagine spilling them on a brand new chipset.
- Chebsi, on 10/17/2008, -0/+10Not just one chipset - a whole chipset family. It would be quite a tragedy.
- ChuckIT, on 10/17/2008, -3/+13why digg this guy down? Intel makes ***** IG - the AMD 730/790 is good and so is this new NVIDIA platform - cheers are indeed welcomed. competition is always welcomed.
- maninalift, on 10/17/2008, -0/+8Obligatory "Obligatory ***" post
- Mohdoo, on 10/17/2008, -0/+7So how long until it is announced that all of them are defective?
- stukdog, on 10/17/2008, -1/+8I know the article is about the chip, but the summary is interesting. Apple really did announce this chipset before NVIDIA did. I suppose even NVIDIA knows that if it's announced by Apple, it will make it in the mainstream news.
If NVIDIA called a special event and invited all the top reporters and blogs, you think they would all show up? YOu think they would have thousands of people watching and refreshing live-update blogs? - Stevethegreat, on 10/17/2008, -1/+5According to the numbers it's about as fast as the desktop version of 9400gt which in its turn is about 30% slower than the 8600GT with which Macbook pro was "armed" until now.
In other words it's the fastest integrated Graphics chip to this day and in fact would be able to play most of the games on Macbook's native resolution (in somewhat lowered gfx options). Quite impressive feat from nVidia to create such a chip.... - barnett25, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4That is because Ars is the single best resource for tech news on the internet.
- inactive, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3Obligatory IT'S OVER 9000 post.
- radu79, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3And I guess NWN 2 too ;)
- agent42, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3I won't be buying any Nvidia chipset product until the air clears about their massive failures.
- davewelsh79, on 10/17/2008, -1/+4Crysis, Crysis Warhead, and Oblivion?
- Stevethegreat, on 10/17/2008, -1/+4We're talking about integrated here.
Anyhow it's actually one generation behind. nVidia 9xxx series is in fact refresh of the 8xxx series at 65nm and they practically have about the same performance. GT200 is the new chip of nVidia, g8x and g9x (which are equivalent chips) is the previous generation. - postal21, on 10/17/2008, -1/+3"Come on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. spill the beans..."
- megamod, on 10/17/2008, -0/+29400 chipset?
- TVarmy, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Apple certainly is great at marketing. Plus, Jobs' enthusiasm about design and technological process is much more infectious than your typical presenter's. I had never even heard of SLI or these next-gen integrated graphics until the event because I'm not in the market to build or buy a computer at the moment. Now, I'm really excited for the progress Nvidia is making in this area, and it will probably influence my purchasing decisions next time I build something. If I can get a form of SLI and faster video encoding/decoding for buying a slightly more expensive motherboard with integrated graphics, I most definitely will.
- Dalhectar, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2The article is 2 days old dumbass. Let's review history.
-Apple released the MacBook on the 14th which contains the chipset, yet didn't mention any tech info on the chipset. Typical Apple.
-NVidia released spec info on the 15th. This article was posted on Ars on the 15th. Same day as Techreport, Anandtech, and others post their stories on it.
-The Digg link is made on the 16th
-Story becomes popular on the 17th
Ars was on time. It just took a while for this ars story to get on the front page. - Rudegar, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1hope it's not heavy beans :S
- kraetos, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1The GPU is becoming more and more useful, and having powerful but compact and low-power GPUs is becoming very important in the portable space.
The thing I like most about Apple not skimping on the GPU is the fact that 10.6 is going to use the GPU to handle some tasks normally reserved for the CPU. These new, powerful GPUs are obviously in preparation for Snow Leopard. - SniperSlap, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Even though they are getting somewhat lazy, nvidia still makes a great product.
I hope they seek to bring new big ideas into the market soon. Especially with AMD/ATI in such rough shape. There was a blunder. - syphern, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Prrt...
- rowlodge, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1why didn't they combine these with their 8800gt's ?, isnt that less than an 8800?
maybe because this was designed a long time ago. - Kerrigore, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Bean there, done that.
- brandondatwyler, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1i think i saw somewhere that it would run at like 7fps on these chips.
So, yes, it can.
But, no, not really. - Elranzer, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1I had always thought Intel was only improving with their GMA with the X3100 and up (chipsets G35+), since they support DirectX10, Shader Model 4 and AVC codecs. The Intel units always use less power and they have terrific support under Linux (and Mac), not just Windows. They shouldn't necessarily be used in a power gamer's desktop, but they've got their advantages in a laptop.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#Hardware:_g ... - inactive, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1nVidia's integrated graphics might be better than Intel's, but everything else about Intel chipsets blows nVidia out of the water.
I happen to like stability. - TVarmy, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1So, could Apple possibly enable it in the future through a firmware/driver update? I'm thinking they're doing this right now because they want that to be a compelling feature in Snow Leopard, and in order to sell a lot of copies of the OS AND a lot of computers, they're going to start selling a lot of computers with the Nvidia IGP and discrete graphics by April next year. That way, they encourage people to make their computers even faster by adding Hybrid SLI support and CUDA/OpenCL acceleration to applications and the OS by buying a relatively cheap OS update that will be hard to resist. That should make them a cool extra $80-129 more per computer. Not fun for the early adopters, but this isn't the first time Apple's pulled a move like this.
I also can see them including the Hybrid SLI drivers for Vista on the Snow Leopard disc, like how they included the non-beta Boot Camp drivers with the Leopard disc. Actually, it could even just be a tiny firmware patch that merely switches the feature on. Apple's done stuff like this before as well, when they sold laptops with 802.11N cards that were crippled to just B/G until the 802.11N Airport routers were announced. In an even deeper jerk move, people were charged $1 for the firmware to get 802.11N.
I like Macs, but I'd say that you'd be smart to wait until Snow Leopard comes out, or even wait a month longer for the next speed bump. There's no way they're going to stick with a board that only supports 4 GB max of RAM much longer. - Giga, on 10/18/2008, -0/+1GT series is current. 9 series is one generation old. 8 series is two generations old (only if you consider the 8 series and 9 series as two different generations when the 8800GTS 512MB is effectively the same chip as the 9600GT - it was a marketing jump). Treating an overclocked GT series card as a completely new generation is a joke, your poor counting notwithstanding.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1I don't think nVidia corporate gives much of a damn how their high performance gaming cards are doing except as a long term indicator of the state of their technology. Much the less in designs for gpus and chipsets like these which are geared toward a large slice of the market and mostly aimed at manufacturer needs to reduce costs in their designs.
- radu79, on 10/18/2008, -0/+1Yeah, recently they started to make slightly better cards, but for some reason many new laptops still use their old chipsets (950).
Oh, and the Intel tech support is garbage. I wrote to them a while ago complaining about some bugs in their OpenGL drivers that made our application crash on Intel cards. Their response was to contact the makers of the application so that we can get a newer version... Even after a few e-mails re-explaining the situation, they didn't get it, so I just gave up and disabled some features if the user had an Intel card, so that it won't crash anymore. - Elranzer, on 10/17/2008, -0/+19400 is OVER 9000
- daschupa, on 10/17/2008, -0/+0Obligatory response from a person who doesn't get sarcasm: It ran on the last macbook pro well enough and that only had an 8600m, just don't do what I did and get Vista to play it.
- syphern, on 10/17/2008, -1/+1Just farting away i see... just farting away...

- ChuckIT, on 10/17/2008, -1/+1when i got to his comment 4 hours ago, he was placed at 0 diggs, thus my response.
- ozid, on 10/17/2008, -1/+1"The 9600 GT will also be available on certain Macbook Pro models in a Hybrid SLI configuration."
its not hybrid SLI... - Giga, on 10/18/2008, -0/+0"or even wait a month longer for the next speed bump."
Don't get this speed bump, get the one coming just after! This approach doesn't really work as there is always another speed bump just around the corner. Unless you want a Mac Mini. - kickrocks, on 10/17/2008, -0/+0I like to see that NVIDIA is scrambling to make up lost ground since the new ATI 4800 cards provided much better benchmarks (ie the release of the 260 16 bit). I am curious to see how this competition evolves given that it is finally equal again. I do agree with radu and chuck though.
- Giga, on 10/18/2008, -0/+0That's because they only placed their comment "4 hours ago" (based on your last comment's timestamp).
- Giga, on 10/18/2008, -0/+0"If games for windows are compatible on Mac OS ? direct x 10? "
Not quite sure what you were trying to say, but you can run Windows Vista on a Macbook. So yes, the game is compatible on a Mac, but not with the default OS at this stage. - inactive, on 10/17/2008, -2/+1If games for windows are compatible on Mac OS ? direct x 10?
- inactive, on 10/17/2008, -2/+1It cost me 3 pinto beans to buy the 9400 chipset
- Bhatch514, on 10/17/2008, -4/+2Finaly my cheap HTPC will be built. Looking for my ASUS board with a 9300 and that 70$ Core 2 i have in my closet.
- klowngoblin, on 10/17/2008, -3/+1an 8600 GT? its fukin 3 generations old
8600GT >> 9600GT >> GTX260 >> GTX260+/unlocked stream processors
