- Mootabolife, on 06/16/2008, -7/+97I'm buying an ATI card next, this is *****.
- xaxxon, on 06/16/2008, -4/+89It's not "UMAP" it's "BS".
- dethklok, on 06/16/2008, -3/+83I wondered what was with the "See price in cart" button at newegg. Its stupid, time consuming, and overall a bad idea.
- ruded0g, on 06/16/2008, -0/+64See what happens when you're top dog... Come on AMD/ATI lets get faster more competitive cards out so it benefits us the customer..
- critofur, on 06/16/2008, -4/+58No more NVidia products for me. I've been using NVidia cars since the Riva 128 / TNT... Bye bye Nvidia. Just put an ATi 3850 in my main PC. Too bad it's not as fast as an 8800GT, but oh well, they say "put your money where your mouth is, and I did. Vote with your $
- PeteyBoy23, on 06/16/2008, -1/+43What a complete crock and a waste of our time. Down with UMAP!
- Oldie, on 06/16/2008, -0/+39Lots of companies have this policy (Dyson and Apple for example), but that doesn't make it right. Free markets shouldn't be messed with like this.
- dood, on 06/16/2008, -1/+38Amazon has this, too. They try to justify it by saying it's just like when you go to a store and you have to ask someone for the price of an item. Heh, I can't remember the last time I've had to do anything like that, but maybe I don't shop at snooty stores.
I simply refuse to play their game, and I buy these items elsewhere (and I tell the retailers why). - shadearg, on 06/16/2008, -0/+21The RV700 lineup is releasing in a week and it sounds like Nvidia is in some real trouble. The 4850 (~$200) appears to be 40% more powerful than the 8800 GT and the 4870 (~$300) appears to be 40% more powerful than the 9800 GTX. No official word yet due to NDA, so leaks are the only insight. Reviews should be coming early next week.
To get a good idea, read the last paragraph on the Tweaktown review of the Zotac GeForce 280 GTX AMP! Edition.

- sexybobo, on 06/16/2008, -0/+19Ok so this just regulates the lowest price people can advertise the card for? So newegg can't take out an ad that says the card cost less then the price listed in the UMAP? But this doesn't affect at all the actual price they sell it as?
- superppl, on 06/16/2008, -0/+19If you haven't already stopped purchasing NVidia cards when they bribed Crytek to ruin Crysis, then now is the time.
It's a shame ATI drivers on linux suck. - benologist, on 06/16/2008, -0/+18"I highly suggest you read the policy in full if you intend to intelligently discuss this issue"
New to the internet? Welcome.
Why does nVidia cares so much what the end price on the cards is. It's their chips regardless what card you buy, and they're getting paid the same either way. - Terr01, on 06/16/2008, -0/+17Sounds like it. They probably see it as an advantage because it stops gradual price-slashing wars among retailers. (Hint: Not an advantage to the end consumer.)
- Djharlock, on 06/16/2008, -1/+17Did you even read the article?
- tdishman, on 06/16/2008, -0/+15If you think it's a pain in the ass for consumers, it's an incredible pain for retailers. MAP pricing is not uncommon, and as a retailer we are liable if an ad, or an affiliate (like a shopping site or Google Products) displays the non-MAP price. Huge pain to try and track down everywhere that you have pricing displayed and try and get those people to comply.
- rolandvvv, on 06/16/2008, -0/+14I smell a greasemonkey script...
- Raptor007, on 06/16/2008, -9/+22I'm not. ATI's terrible customer service and drivers turned me off from them.
I miss 3dfx. - buba1243, on 06/16/2008, -0/+13I am with you planing on a new comp come August was going nVidia now going ATI. Anyone want to put up a protest link I will sign up.
- grapesofbaath, on 06/16/2008, -0/+13You mean unless you game or run Vista with Aero.
- meed, on 06/16/2008, -0/+13The way I see it:
Nvidia being douchebags using a umap is keeping people from simply being able to find the lowest priced card of a certain type. I wonder how many buyers will now end up purchasing a ati card instead due to their prices being listed no matter how much under what ati suggested they be sold for? - dood, on 06/16/2008, -2/+14I did RTFA, and I am aware of the relationship in play here. The retailers could all say no, and then the manufacturers would be forced to back down. The retailers are apparently more than happy to accept the anti-customer terms of the deal, rather than resolve the issue.
The retailers are as much at fault as the manufacturers. They're not some "innocent pawns" in this game. We're talking about retail industry leaders here, who do have some clout. - centran, on 06/16/2008, -0/+10That is correct. They can sell it below price but cannot advertise it as such. This means that even on their site while searching. You first need to add it to your chart to see the price. Not sure about other places but Newegg has made it a simple process where it pops up just that item and then you can click to keep it in your cart or remove it.
- Terr01, on 06/16/2008, -0/+9Ditto. Newegg should make the real price visible in an HTML comment and get some employee's nephew to post a userscript to grab it.
- dagnome1984, on 06/16/2008, -0/+9ATI's Linux drivers can be a pain to install properly.
- SethEllis, on 06/16/2008, -0/+9I'm sure we can find a way to circumvent this. I wish I could find a way to automatically look up the price at various stores. The prices could then be shown next to each other on another website. Then you could see the prices next to each other for direct comparison.
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -0/+9My work depends on quick and accurate data, nvidia is breaking pricing engines and making it harder for me to recommend them since I can't give accurate information, therefore I shall not.
- Tishiablo, on 06/16/2008, -3/+12I never have problems with ATI's drivers... And wasn't it NVIDIA not too long ago that was most responsible on Windows Vista crashes?
- Chalks777, on 06/16/2008, -1/+9if you don't need the insanely high settings on crysis, get a 3870 512mb card (not the 3870 X2). With that card and an AMD 64 X2 5000+ processor clocked @ 3.0ghz, I can run crysis on medium settings at ~45fps. It was a cheap card too, I love it.
- shadearg, on 06/16/2008, -0/+7Oops, the links work now..

http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Desktops-and-Notebooks/AM ... - gbrmn, on 06/16/2008, -1/+7I've been buying ATI for a long time, for a while now I had been thinking about giving a NVIDIA a try next time I buy a video card. Now I'm not so sure...
- eggsovereasy, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5I was in Best Buy yesterday and the pricetags on the Macs were covered over. I found that odd.
- alexforcefive, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5This is the true reason - "the minimum advertised price policy is really designed to give some clarity in the product segmentation and really help the consumer see where those products are in relation to other NVIDIA products"
Nvidia has ***** up their product range/naming/pricing, and instead of just taking the hit and fixing things, they're going to ***** over card manufacturers, retailers and consumers to make sure they don't drop even a little bit of profit. - dsmx, on 06/16/2008, -1/+6Neither wait for the new series of cards that come out from both ATI and NVIDIA later in the summer.
- AceGoober, on 06/16/2008, -2/+7UMAP would be good IF there were a steady stream of serious performance competition from the AMD/ATI camp. Since there isn't, it makes no sense to implement, IMO.
- Super6, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Email the director of public relations and explain why you aren't happy:
dperez@nvidia.com - Terr01, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4I bought my card before this UMAP rigamarole, but I did the opposite. I said "No way am I getting ATI" because of a past experience with incredibly crappy drivers. (Specifically: What use is a gamma correction control that--even when "disabled" so I can use third-party software--always gets reset when going into fullscreen games? My monitor's age made games unplayable.)
- grapesofbaath, on 06/16/2008, -2/+6Wow, what a pain the ass. If the cards and drivers weren't as good as they usually are for NVIDIA, they would be a pile of dust. NVIDIA has the most ridiculously meaningless card naming system ever created, and now they remove prices as well.
Come on ATI, if you can't take advantage of a situation like this, you never will. - Terr01, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Umpa Lumpa Dumpadee, Da,
Look at those cards shipped here from A-sia
To see more you mu-ust click through...
We do not give price sorting to you!
What will you do: It must be in your cart
Or else all you see is the fancy box-art.
Maybe it's time to op-en up Ex-cel
And do it all in spread... sheet.. hell!
(Da da dun dun dun: I don't like the looks of it.) - fuzzynyanko, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Hm... doing this against AMD, a company that's skilled at price wars, isn't a good idea
- ishkur88, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Flickr? TinyPic? ImageShack? PhotoBucket? i mean really...
- MikeSD34, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4It's easy to say that all the retailers should say no, but it's difficult to actually do. Retail business can be very cut throat, and no one wants to give their competition an edge. As an example, if NewEgg went to BestBuy and tried to form a boycott, BestBuy would just tell them to ***** off, and enjoy any customers NewEgg would lose trying to boycott NVIDIA.
If you don't like it, let NVIDIA know through their contact channels, and through your wallet. - alexforcefive, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Yeah they suck, but they're getting better in every release. Which is more than can be said for Nvidia, apparently. source: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10 ...
I was going to buy a new ATI card soon anyway, but this UMAP ***** really sealed the deal for me - clickwir, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4More work to see the prices? I can tell you right now that when I go looking for a video card, if I have to go through all that BS, I will not purchase one of their products. Simply will not. I'm voting with my wallet. I will not buy any product that I have to "Click here to see the price" or "Add to cart to see price". NO. If you aren't showing me the price, I'm not going to consider it.
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -2/+5a 3870 is as fast as a 9600gt would be a better comparison. 8800gt blows the 3870 out of the water by 15-20%
- Greg2k, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3UMPA, LUMPA, DUHPADEE DUH
Yeah, sounds about right. - 360photo, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3Nikon and Canon have been doing this for years. If there is a big Ad in the local paper, they will pay a chunk of it if they get to control the price for the store, and yes all the companies do this.
- Ellipsys, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3I'd buy them in a second if they only had decent Linux drivers.
- gurudrew, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3Exactly, if the price is not shown up front, it won't even make it onto my list of recommendations.
- Rojer64, on 06/16/2008, -0/+3I say : the day I dictate prices on the stuff I sell, you are kindly invited to buy somewhere else.
BTW : I sell boycott campaigns. -
